Well just so there is no confusion, there are bigger differences between the regular 335i and the 335is. Apart from the aesthetic changes (black mirrors, no fog lights, unique rear diffuser, "is" badging inside/outside, and gray gauges) BMW also added a unique sports exhaust which is different from the regular 335i sport exhaust, Motor mounts are stiffer, it has a bigger cooling fan, an additional oil cooler and an additional radiator (hence the foglight delete for airflow). The engine is basically identical to the one in the 1M with the turbo overboost AND while it wasn't mentioned in the video it was offered with a 6speed manual tranny for those who dont want only 2 pedals. Hope this helps.
Oh also, I'm curious how his DCT will hold up to the power in the long run. There have been many on the forums who blow the DCT tranny's because they were only designed the 290ish ft/lbs of torque that the M3 V8 makes. They were never intended to handle the mountain of torque a modified N54 engine makes. This guy might have almost double the original torque this tranny was designed for.
@@Enzonius Not true! If you look at the GETRAG page, these DCT are rated for ~500 ft. lbs. Also, there are clutch kits for those going higher in the torque curve.
There is no additional oil cooler, but there is an additional pony radiator on the driver's side. The E93 335is convertibles lack these and thus retain the fog lights. The ducting for the airflow to the oil cooler on the passenger side is much improved over any other E9x 335i.
@@maxnix346 everyone thinks it has an additional oil cooler but it doesnt. Just the auxiliary radiator. Got into a argument one time with an IS owner and he got butthurt i was right lol
These E92s are so brilliant. The design is absolutely timeless, and the driving dynamics are awesome. That hydraulic steering has excellent feel, and it feels so natural in comparison to the F32s. I love this generation of BMWs. The interior has a much higher quality feel than in the F32. It's an awesome car!
To me, the e90's interior feels like a downgrade in build quality from the e46's interior. Same for e60 vs e39. But the F30 feels like a further downgrade from that. The door handles, points you touch daily, are Kia like in terms of feel.
JDMSteven people love to hate on the n55 because they cant get over how much more reliable it is than the n54, even though the n54 is alot more tuner friendly the n55 is alot more stronger and a hell lot more reliable
@@andeleputo89 you got your story all twisted little guy try that again n54 is stronger engine not n55 is more reliable then n54 do I have to teach you more just let me know
dala bu lol get off your high horse and accept the facts. Ask any bmw mechanic hell ask anyone on the forums and they tell you the same thing, n55 is literally the reliable version of a n54 especially since its a single big twin scroll turbo as opposed to the twinturbo n54 hence it being more easily prone to fail. We get it your 335i is in the shop often. But the n54 does have the edge in aftermarket upgrades and big power gains though
Vtec is in everything its just hondas fancy term for variable valve timing. If you truly wanna get to work fast just drift long enough to fill your boost gage
hairychesticles1 V-tec isn’t just VVT like most modern cars have lol, the cam profiles on, say, a k20z are FAR different then some economy car lol, go wind a k20 out to 9000 rpm and get back to me, the higher you wind them the harder they pull. I drive a Mazda Speed6 btw, not a civic. I used to be a hater til I drove one, the performance Honda 4 bangers are some of the most capable on the planet and will crap on just about any other 4 banger when it comes to performance per $ spent
@@sleeper.simulant7327 the civics are nice and i dont hate them. I think recently when it comes to style honda has been on point though i do think the type R is a bit to flashy for me but when i comes to bang for buck i prefer my used scat pack. I had a newer civic si race me once and eventhough i smoked him i will say that the 1.5L engine it had was P good. The dang thing went. I like the way the si looks way more then the type R. But for 30k you cant rly beat havin 485hp and if i was gonna get a hot hatch my choice would be the golf R but the used ones were allot of money
Just to clear a few things up, the 335is comes with a little more than what the owner stated - the MPPK (M-Performance Power Kit) basically comes with upgraded intakes, exhaust, and some extra tuning to allow it to hit the advertised numbers and have that overboost setting. Also, it does come with a Limited Slip Differential (it was one of the biggest selling points for enthusiasts considering the "regular" E92's only had a electronically controlled open differential). Just because I'm an F30 guy and wanted to clear this up, the chassis code for the M3 for 2015+ is the F80.
I own a single turbo swapped e92 335i w/ the n54, and I also own an e92 M3. Hands down, I prefer the M3 in every way. Once you experience the characteristics specific to the M3 (throttle response, high revving v8, steering rack, ability to fit 275's and larger in the front), you will understand why - and no, I could care less that the n54 has much more torque earlier in the RPM band. Long live the last true M car, the e92 M3. \m/(oo)\m/
Super interesting proposition. An M car will always be better out of the box, but the 335is’ are nothing to sneeze at and this one is clearly well set up.
that's the thing....in a straight line, sure a tuned 335i is quicker, but I drive on winding northern CA roads (like the canyons) and I'd prefer the track focus of a M3.
yes sir it wont be a m3 killer when it goes into limp mode after the 2nd lap. I own a 335i so dont take it as shit talking. However the m3 is and always will be the preferred track option. N54 normal operating temp is around 240 degrees and they just cant handle the constant heat from track use like the S65 can.
smgs921 did your car come with the stock oil cooler ? I’ve never ran into limp mode over temps . I’ve ran multiple consecutive laps at circuit of the americas and grand sport speedway and peaked at 260f .
I just sold my 335is last week. Now that it wasn't a great car but it just didn't have that special feel of an M car. You can make stupid power but it just didn't steal my heart. It really was a pre M4 for it's time.
People dont understand what the is designation really is...the 35is is much different out of the box than the 35i...stock the suspension is a bit lower as well as much stiffer...the n54 is a twin turbo and the dual clutch is a standard option...the car comes with bigger and lighter wheels and upgraded sway bars/ strut braces etc....the IS is much different than a 35i and much closer to an M car by todays standards...ive driven an e92 m3 and 335is...the 335is feels quicker tbh in all aspects...and i own a z4 35is(;
i own a e93 M3 12, and ive raced these 335is and to be honest they are quick... i notice the turbo cars pick up well, i can stay with them in a M3 DCT but on top end the M3 blows them away.... Also factor for me the M3 is now iconic car and i wanted something nice in all departments.... i notice when i pull up to lights people see the M3 and give much respect, doesnt matter whats next to me.... Porsche, Camaro, Corvette, Charger, Challenger, AMG and RS's... they see her, M3 in black with full black windows and looks so agressive , they know hes got power and handling , they dont even test me, and ones that are testing they find out i can keep up and start to gain on them and pass them.... BMW make fantastically looking cars and they drive well in all departments... that M button pressed, total animal she becomes... and the balance, brakes the power band of the V8, steering so driveable... if you want a complete car get a full on M car... its on another level compared to others.. AMG is mostly all engine, RS's are mostly 4 wheel drive implementation, M cars are truely ultimate driving machines... as they say...thats my 2cents...
Almost picked up a 335is, ended up getting a G37 the N54 motors require so much regular maintenance to keep them on the road and the one I was looking at was not well kept.
I never said they were un-reliable I said they required a lot of regular maintenance, if you stay on top of them they are reliable and rarely will give you any issues but that maintenance is frequent and not cheap.... At least when compared to a G37. Belts, Air filter and spark plugs is pretty much all that is required after 80K miles, which is sadly not the case with the 335is.
less than a year ago I paid $18k for my ‘11 335is Coupe Full stock with it all the top end M performance and M trim options..., and it included a Cobb tuner (don’t laugh). Mods I added include CAI, Catless downpipes, a 5.5” intercooler, 2x colder plug and coils. I run 93 octane and add Lucas 3x booster. With the stage 2 93 Cobb tune I get 19.5 lbs of boost and 592 torque. Next mod lsd and M3 upper and lower control arms. Good luck to you. I love mine
Zack, I liked the way Matt used to begin the drive before they started getting into what's done to the car. I'd rather watch you drive while listening to the conversation.
I thought there was going to be a comparison? Where's the tuned M3? Anyway I see a lot of chatting about the differences and they are many. I was glad to hear him say "With this set up you get a fast GT car" and that's what it comes down to. I had a 2008 335i with the bolt ons and tune and it was very quick in a straight line. (390+ HP and 412 torque). But I wasn't happy with just that. When I was trying to maneuver through traffic (not like a douche just everyday stuff) I would want to get out of a lane and step on it but then it would be 1 second 2second and TOO LATE. Then in corners I felt like I was still driving my dad's car instead of a sports car. Soooo I sold it and bought an E46 M3. Now driving is what MY limits are about. Not the car letting me down with it's limits. It does what I tell it to when I tell it to do it and I can carve the corners like I'm wearing a sports car suit. It's not as fast in a straight line (Maybe .5 of a second difference). But I enjoy driving so much more. LOVE THE LSD TOO! Mind you this video makes me think about having both LOL. But hey couldn't a guy get a M235i and just go nuts on it with doing a build and come out with a killer in all areas? Or is the N55 just not doable like that?
Damn, this makes me miss mine. Absolutely loved it, long highway trips or B-road shenanigans. Same DCT setup too. Thank you for the video, brings back memories.
The sound is great, but the low torque combined with heavy weight makes them kinda slow by today's performance standards. I kept up with one in my mildly tuned '18 Civic Si ..Pretty sure they forgot to downshift lol
Conekillah That's nice. The M3 is still the one getting all the pussy while 335 goes home bragging to his dudebros. Jokes aside, both are great cars. I'm fully aware the 335 can be much faster in a straight line, but I couldn't care less. The difference between a regular 3 series and an ///M is not just power, it's a combination of a lot of things that makes an ///M car an ///M car. I had a 600whp Evo X that was eating R8s and lambos for breakfast. Been there, done that. But nowadays I also realize the R8 and lambo drivers don't care. You sit in either one of those and if you don't say "Damn, this is a nice car," you're not an enthusiast.
@@dustinbyrd832 knock on wood. So far so good for me too. Do regular maintenance... plus with the DTC I highly suggest changing transmission fluid and filter at about 70-80k miles.
Hahahaha, love the torch on the bar in the background of the promo in the intro. Matt Farah, I wonder how much time you've spent staring at the movement through the display back of one of your watches after a really good dab :P
Speaking of, while it's sad to see the Fox Body go, love the idea of auctioning it off for charity, and that shirt is great. I hope the results of the auction are fantastic, and that the car goes to a wonderful owner that truly appreciates the car, and how much work and love you've put into it for years to come.
pure evil tuning does a great job! i personally own a e90 FBO e85 M3 but if i would of gotten a 335i i would of gotten it tuned by the best @Pure_evil_tuning
I love my 335is. The only thing I wish it had was an LSD. when you start to make more power i feel like its really necessary. The problem is the only options for the DCT cost 2500+ dollars before labor. BMW really misses the mark by not offering an LSD in an Msport tuned 3 series.
BlitzkriegRap no its an electronically controlled diff that functions as an open diff but will apply breaks on the wheel as opposed to locking the diff and distributing power appropriately. Thats why youll see alot of single tire burnouts from 335s
Colin Hanks who goes to the dealer.. fix it yourself. You should have done your homework before buying an n54 they’re cheap for a reason. I do all the work my self.
My kinda car guy... Builds the underdog. I raced an is in my 330ci once. Was closer than I would have thought. You ask me the 3 liters need twin 30's thats 1.5 liter a piece with double the overhead. As long as the head is arp'd and torqued to like 90+lbft should hold for 30lbs right? Ansys says we're good. 1.2deg max camber for street. Bmw has it like that from factory cause anti squat.
Why do 335i drivers compare the v8 m3 against the 335i why not the f80 twin turbo m3 because it is better period. The e92 m3 is the sum of all parts doesn't need modding has enough torque so you can ring the engine and drive it. 335i might have a faster car but it's not an M and no matter how many times you slice it never will be.
its hard as hell to find the 135 and 335 IS models. n54 + dual clutch is the true unicorn. Some people say they didnt have time to use the n55 on the is so that why they used the "old" n54. Wish I could find a good priced IS.
