I've seen them test bearings a few times. My tip would be to find a small hill that flattens out, start at the exact same place every time, jump on the deck and see how far you roll before you stop on the flat so there's no variable of how hard you push. Repeat it a few times to get an average for each bearing.

Of course there's always the more technical way, you could put a skateboard on a treadmill, put weights on it and connect the front trucks to a force meter and see how much force is needed to keep the board there. But my guess is that wouldn't look as good on camera haha

Bearing spacers do support the structure of your moving components however that isn't their main purpose. Skateboarding without spacers is completely fine. The main purpose to be able to tighten the wheels down all the way to eliminate play and and not seize. This is key in longboarding when powerslides are initiated frequently and spacers reduce chatter and make the wheels slide smooth to the pavement rather than loudly honking. This concept doesn't really apply in skateboarding in my opinion because hard wheels on a hard surface actually slide better when the wheels are loose.

No, spacers are designed to keep your bearings in place when you do powerslides, or other tricks that put a lot of sideways force on your bearings. It just keeps them allowed properly so everything works better and lasts longer. Of course there are other benefits to them, but that was their original purpose.

The thing is, different wheels have a different core length, causing the issue where not all spacers fit. If too small, it will do nothing but add weight, and if too big, it will prohibit the bearing from being fully in the wheel, causing it to have a slight wobble due to the displacement that can break the bearing and possibly make them run slower. True fact, the spacers that come with bones reds, are too big for bones wheels! Fun facts for yall

I just bought these for my long board and they are excellent! You need to worry about torsional loads with your bearings. Without spacers and speed washers, you move slower, noisier board, and you wear down the bearings faster. GET THESE!

What is commonly referred to as a bearing washer is actually a very small thin bearing race. The race is used on the outer side of the bearing to keep the bearing from touching the wheel lock nut and creating friction.

Lance and Aaron this is what it means. Not a down hill thing, just maybe they use them more often then us. Skateboard bearings are not that good at taking side loads, they are all strong in axial load though. In skateboarding there is tons of abuse from each direction. Built in bearings will increase the amount of load they can take from the side, horizontally. Keeping the bearings in true alignment while reducing abuse and wear that can easily knock a bearing out of it's precision tolerances. This gives you a longer lasting bearing that maintains precision and speed. Also we all power slide, not just downhillers. This built in bearing is pre-emptive or corrective maintenance. There are types of maintenance. And even simply running a bearing through it's life span until it fails is one. You replace the bearing when this happens and you are good to go. Preventative maintenance is when we clean and re-lube the bearing through it's life span to get longer life and performance while saving money. This is the one I think we most often do. Of course if we want to keep going with this bearing study. Then manufacturing materials determine a lot too. I've been studying bearings, I want to make my own and create a good bearing out of the box that lasts with high preformace. Maintenace is always up to the Skater. To keep that on the table I am thinking of including bearing spacers with my bearings. Skate Girl, the bearing nerd.

when they were tightened all the way down, the bearing was doing its job. but they are brand new, so they seem sluggish. when you loosened it, the inner race is actually spinning on the axle like a bushing which seems much more free initially. those could be tightened all the way down and be perfectly fine after breaking down some of the lube.

spacers are used to keep the bearings even in the wheel. Without them they have a chance to move a little especially with a lot of sliding like reverts and can become uneven causing them to slow down. They help a lot with high impact as they help spread the impact so it is less stressful on the bearings themselves. The washers are there to get the nut to put pressure on the correct spot on the bearing. Without them the nut can push on the shield itself instead of the inner ring. This can cause the shield to become damaged and make them ride slower as well as let water and sand into them. So having this built in gets rid of some of the variables and helps weight distribution a lot more than traditional spacers as well as makes a more solid nut to truck pressure meaning less chance of bearings wearing out as quick.
@epitaphofnow
@epitaphofnow 8 лет назад
Broseph, Washers spread out force from the nut acting in a tension plane (axial pressure). With out a washer, only the surface area under the nut gets pressure - which means 6 points on the nut creating differential pressure on the bearings and that means they wear out pretty fast (comparatively speaking). The washer absorbs the 6 points of pressure applying more even pressure to the bearings, causing smoother rotation and thus a smoother ride. Don't lose your washers bro. The spacer is designed to prevent wear on the axle (the bolt you mount the wheel on) and thus cause the bearing to wear through. Think of it like a mechanical condom - keeps the shaft from getting rough... Don't lose your spacers bro. Bring a magnet with you along with that wrench when you change your bearings so you don't lose your nuts, spacers, and washers. Set it in your lap, underneath the wheel you are working on and it'll catch it when you pull off the wheel. If you do this your wheels, bearings, and ultimately the entire truck assembly will last longer. =) And since we're a bunch of poor asses that matters kinda. Much love, - Joe Shmoe Aircraft Mechanic. PS, Love your vids. Shred-wards be, or some shit =)

3:54 . . . The reason for the spacer washers is to ensure the lateral thrust pressure from the lock nuts (outer wheel bearing), and truck hanger (inner wheel bearing), is exerted positively on the inner bearing races, and not the dust caps, which would chew them up, or even risk contacting the outer race.

Old walmart boards and other cheapo boards had the extended race bearings back in the day. It didn't help them though. Only way to make cheap bearings fast is clean the lubricants out and use a lighter oil based lube which usually decreases life of bearings.

It's generally recommended to use spacers with standard bearings. Honestly, extended races are logically how all bearings should be made and you know your wheel is properly made if it still spins after tightening it.

It's amazing how few skaters get that a properly setup wheel with a spacer and washers on either side is meant to be tightened all the way down so the wheel will not wiggle back and forth. The bearing races and spacers then form one connected unit, and the bearings spin AROUND the races. Biltin Bearings just make this whole process simpler by building the space into the bearing to begin with.

The washers are supposed to keep the side of the bearing from rubbing on the aluminum of the truck. Sometimes the aluminum truck end is not flat and can scrape on the bearing, slowing the wheel. The washer pushes it just a tiny bit out usually enough to prevent rubbing. At the same time, the aforementioned rough end of the aluminum can twist the inner race of the inside wheel bearing, causing it to slow way down if the nut is even kinda snugged up (common on cheaper trucks). Built-in bearings prevent this since the nut is compressing the races against eachother, and their precise machined surfaces keep them both perfectly parallel, especially when torqued down tightly. This can also be accomplished with the washers and seperate spacers, but they are easy to lose and tedious at times. The built-in bearings eliminate this woe, as there are no extra bits to lose. On top of that, most companies sell tube steel spacers, which are simply stamped and not precise- often these will only work marginally. A good set of MACHINED spacers is a great cheap option, as they are precisely made, and will prevent misalignment of the bearings. Simply put, built-in bearings last longer for high-speed and side-load (downhill longboading, sliding, etc). Otherwise, normal bearings are best for skateboarding.

Spacers and washers are more common and important in longboarding because they prevent the nut and truck from pushing on the bearing when sliding. It also keeps the bearing from deforming because the inner circle has nowhere to go. Built ins really convenient for swapping out wheels on the go. If they fit right the nut should be able to be tightened down as far as it can go and the wheel should spin unimpaired.
@nullwii
@nullwii 8 лет назад
bearing washers and spacers have a very simple job, to keep the bearing face from rubbing your trucks/inside of the wheel/nut when you tighten down the nut. most people just run loose nuts but there is still more drag.

The main point of bearing spacers is to move the stress from board slides off of the bearings and onto the wheels. Spacers are generally more relevant in "longhill" downboarding as sliding is common for speed checks and turns.

these bearings also help keep your wheels together if that makes any sense. with some longboard/pool wheels a lot of heat or cold can mess with the core of the wheel. these brearings help if the center of the wheel is messed up, and depending on how the wheel is made. some times that inner racer can actually lock into the core of the wheel. so the brearing wouldnt ever spin on the center of the bearing. thuse, relying 100% on the bearings function. and not slipping loosly on the axel.

Dunno if this has been already commented but the whole putting one bearing on at time is important but you should stand up and put all your weight on the wheel to make sure each bearing is seated properly. And then after putting both in, flip it over one or two more times and push down hard. This should allow you to tighten the nut all the way down and have it ride the same. If you want cheap bearings that roll forever, ride zealous bearings.

These would be convenient in theory, but in practice spacers and wheels vary. I have spacers that are 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5 mm long. The 10.3 mm are too small for some wheels so they do nothing and the 10.4 mm are too large for others so the bearings can shift back and forth in the wheel, and the 10.5 mm are simply too large for any wheels. Also, when you tighten them down all the way you don't really want to tighten them as tight as possible because that squeezes the inner race and like squeezing a milk carton could cause it to bulge the other way to some microscopic extent that might affect the bearings, so just tighten them enough that the wheel has no play along the axle.

The most bearings with build-in spacers comes with 10mm spacers (5mm on each bearing) and they only fits in wheels they are made for 10mm spacers like the most longboard wheels. Regular streetskate wheels needs 8mm spacers, so make sure to use bearings with 4mm spacers on each bearing. The Bones bearings use the 4mm spacers.

I used Bones Race Reds for my downhill set up, I haven't noticed a HUGE difference between them and traditional Reds, but they do have a fast roll time.

4:55 yep that is how it is done, when done like that you should be able to tighten them right down as they should have speed washers and spacer included in the build or at least they do now.

What the spacers do is reduce weight stress on the bearings, because they distribute the weight through the inner channel of the wheel. Basically, you're wearing the bearings faster without using the spacers.

The exact point of using something like these bearings, may be not having to worry about small parts, especially when fixing something during dark hours. Something similar can probably work for inlines aswell.

I tighten the nut all the way. Hand spin test is weak but with my weight on the board it rolls way faster. BTW i use spacers and speed rings. I used to watch videos of people saying to tighten the nut then loosen it a little so the wheel wiggles a little. I couldn't stand the rattle noise and my board was slow no matter what bearings i used. I've tightened that nut all the way and never looked back.

With ball bearings a spacer is needed otherwise when tightening the nut causes the inner race to be pushed inwards which causes increased wear on the balls and increased rolling resistance. Roller bearings can mitigate this but a spacer is still a good idea.

The first deck I ever owned was a Gt Coyote III and it had bearings really similar to those. I think it was from the late 70's.

Even though this is from 7 years ago I'm still commenting. So built in bearings are mostly for longboarding. Since in longboarding you're using wider wheels it's better to have the spacer. And in theory you can tighten the nut more because of the wider wheels which take up more space on the axel.

Those who do not use spacers will never know what spacers are for. They are for precision mounting, so your wheels will not deform from the gap once hard pressure is applied. With spacers, any heavy force applied from side motion will distributed evenly to the trucks from the spacers. In turn this should translate to better wheel grip feel. Since the Braille team did say it feels smoother. Its not because they are new. Its because there are lesser chance of the bearings going out of alignment in the wheel bearing wells which causes vibrations. Bearings mounted this way are usually for precision machines where you do not want vibrations or loss of tolerance that results in wear. You will also get more speed from bearing mounted this way than those without spacers. The drawback is the screws need to be torqued a few times before the bearings start to seat correctly in the wheels.

when I skated in late 80s in the uk we called them semi bearings, tbh though them type of bearings at the time were budget cheap things and use to usually come with a budget set up mostly called a turbo 2 board pmsl. I imagine the reds you got in that video are probably good speed bearings but reminded me of budget bearings bk in the late 80s

The thing is, spacers are not actually supposed to contact the axle. They're bigger than the inside diameter of the bearings. These bearings have a really long interior tube, so you are almost doubling the amount of material that is in contact with the axle. That's more friction, which should actually slow you down.

Lance, I know this doesn't seem like it to you street skaters and it comes across as completely counterintuitive, but you should crank the nut all the way down, even with normal bearings with spacers. The free spin of a wheel means absolutely NOTHING, once any load is put on the bearings you won't notice a decrease in speed or roll distance, and you'll actually get better alignment of your wheels after you roll around a little bit and they rest in the wheel.

You shouldn't have any side to side play when tightening the bearings, it may seem like it makes the wheel spin better to have this play, but its just creating free spin, free spin is only good if you want to go through bearings really quickly. The resistance felt in properly tightened bearings, that many people seem to think is bad because it stops the wheels spinning in the air, does very little once you have the weight of a person on the board

The biggest difference is going to be noticed in how long the bearing last. The spacers relieve a portion of the torsional forces placed upon the bearings.
@matmartin8982
@matmartin8982 8 лет назад
guys you should always use the proper spacer in your wheels. if you have built ins fantastic. plus always snug your wheel nut. it only seems slower when your free spin the wheel with you hand. wat you doing when you leave wiggle room is letting it spin on the axle. causing the wheel to be lose. which is bad because when you doing tricks and such you wheels twist just a bit putting extra strain on the bairings which is bad. so in short always use spacers and snug your wheel nut. P.s when you actually ride you won't be able to tell the difference plus it feels better allowing subconscious confidence so you will fully commit to your trick your about to do. thanks for making cool videos.

I had an idea, you guys should try to skate with 608 "one way clutch" type bearings... they spin freely in one direction but have an immediate and positive stop in the other!

@79c15 8 лет назад
they were using bearings like that in the 1980s. I have a set of bearings from 1982 just like that but I'd course they are trashed from being used over 30 years but they have come a long way from then
@jesjr2694
@jesjr2694 4 года назад
in my experience you only need spacers if you're going to put "sideways" force on the bearings. i have them in my long boards (which i do slides on) but not my trick deck. but you can use them on whatever type really. i think they improve the longevity of the bearings.
@exOtikFPS

THE DIFFERENCE IS that the built-ins are all in once piece so there is no friction between bearings and spacers wich give you more speed (or actually make you loose less^^)

People that are upset about Lance getting more face time on the channel can stop watching - the guy has been behind the lens forever, and has been learning how to skate in between all of the different series that he films/shoots for. He is essentially a living testimonial to the SMS's credibility, and you can see plenty of progress over the past year. Lance brings a goofy, fun vibrance to the show, and people need to chill the fudge out. XD
