I own one of these myself. They did every single thing you need to do to make the stock one nice, bars pegs jetting tires sprockets chain then added the engine package to just finish it off. Really nice job guys. The winner of this is going to love it. Great build.

I have been wanting to get one of these bikes for years now. This year I decided I am more serious about getting one. My searching XR650L's on youtube this past year introduced me to Kaplan Cycles via your build video's for this particular bike. Since then, I have come to really appreciate all of you, what you do and I relate to Ken Sr by age and the bikes I had in the 70's and 80's as a kid/teen living in PA across the Delaware River from Jersey. I keep up with and enjoy every video you guys put out. The thought of a chance to own this particular XR650(670)L has got me thinking that would be absolutely awesome to have! Maybe, maybe not. I ride a 1999 36000km bored over 680 high compression ,desmogged, d606 tires, single track off road bush bike . The Rocky Mountain logging roads are where this bike is at home. One of most versatile bikes ever, my go to ride. Cheers

Beautiful! … I’ve had approx. 30 bikes over the past 45 years or so, but I’ve never had two of the main bikes I’ve always wanted; An XR-75 from any year between 1974-1978, and an XR650. My current XR200 is great, but it doesn’t count in that primary wish list. I think it’s HORRIBLE, what they did by changing the new ones to all white! Bring back the RED XR650s! I sure wish I could afford that one right now!

I had a water-cooled '03 XR650R that was street plated and legal in California, of all places. It had been street registered in '04 and the DMV there stopped street plating dirt bikes due to "emissions" and "no DOT safety gear" and other vapid reasons about a year after that bike got its street plate on it. Used a Baja Designs light kit w/battery backup and had a small mirror on the left bar end, and I put billet hubs & 17" wheels on it to super motard it, and used a 39 tooth back sprocket w/one tooth larger countersprocket which gave it a 110 mph top end. It would outrun any sportbike on a tight mountain road no problem, and returned me 45 mpg to boot! This bike was a daily driver for me for about a year or better, only complaint was kick start only. Sold it the following year to a guy in northern CA, got my $$ back out of it and then some. Fun bikes, these Honda thumpers! Thanks man!

I'm interested in seeing how much power is left on the table by not tinkering with ignition timing. Would you guys have any interest in doing a dyno video with the programmable CDI unit from Ignitech Ignition?

We have a 97 600cc xr ran at springfield mile got 59hp on the dyno we USD mega cam also but a few other things different here in Tulsa we have won a lot of races with it and the motor lives for ever if you just keep them fresher up with good maintenance

Curious about the countershaft sprocket. Don't those L's have a skinny one that wallows out the shaft?? Did you replace it?

You guys should do a DR650 and build it out with the 790cc kit from Procycle. You can get 55 hp or more!

I had a AL Baker 670 ported head big fin kit flat side carb unbelievable power I was told almost 60hp by owner who built the bike and it was a 1993 first year mint condition!

You guys ever run across this. I did the overbore kit and hot cam swap. Now it’s difficult to turnover with no decompression

Believe it or not I have a buddy by the name of Chaz who has an 01 XR650R and I’ve seen that man keep his front wheel up at 100+ mph so long that his front wheel will stop and smokes when he brings it back down. I love you’re guys build though! Makes me wish I never sold my XR😢

I think your speaking of the xr650r when you mention BAJA 1000. I’m unaware of anyone running the 650l. Loved this build however. Keep the videos coming.

With this significant power gain, now this bike REALLY needs a cush drive rear hub. Its a pricey addition, but necessary IMO.

The only problem with these bikes is the counter shaft because there's no dampening in the rear at the sprocket to the hub in the wheel. They will strip the counter shaft splines off right at the sprocket.

I have punished more XRs in the woods of RI & CT than any other model bike on the planet. The beauty of these machines is they are so simple to maintain and are like tanks they take a thrashing and keep on going. I never took my race bikes in the woods, I saved them for tracks and such. If I had a KX, it was reserved for MX only and I had an XR 350R for terrorizing trails, mudholes, and scrambler situations. Don't get it twisted they got some upgrades like CR 500 suspensions better rims and tires because I rode them like I stole them and even though they were far heavier than their MX cousins, I wasn't afraid to send them soaring off some pretty steep jumps. For the love of God Upgrade your peg mounts and pegs if you are going to really send an XR because that seems to be the weakest aspect and it only took a few nutcracker experiences for me to realize that for myself. Just some advice from an old school XR rippa that will save you all the painful reckoningy, if you are planning to catch some hang time on an XR thumper you better beef up your pegs because rough landings will make the stock ones fail and you'll be chilling the twins in a bucket of ice. Anyway, XRs are by far THE BEST air cooled woods machines on the planet hands down. I will say that modern CRF bikes don't seem to fully carry the torch but with some love have XR DNA that can be extracted. Just my opinion. Ride safe everyone.

I just purchased a 2022 version (white one)...I know Hondas should be red...but it looks great. Once I master riding it and the 1 year drivetrain warranty expires I want to uncorked it a bit. Probably just remove the smog garbage and a new pipe/carb rejet. God bless the USA and Kaplan America!

Throughout the years of running bikes, the most common part I would have to replace was the chain and the sprockets, I've always wondered why they couldn't build better stronger sprockets that don't get the teeth bent over after 2 or 3,000 miles, that's what bone stock engines, I can't even imagine how often you would have to replace them on this one

Bike sounds killer thing I would do different is put the Baja lighting kit on it

Try the Lectron carburetor on it I offered to ship mine to K. America to try out so long as you send it back.

After watching your video comparing the nx650 to the xr650l, i decided to throw on a dual exhaust from the nx onto the xr because i heard senior say that the nx was a little more powerful cause of the dual. Would love to see you guys do it to xr if you ever get the chance to.

I’ll never regret my decision to get a new 2016 XR650L over the similar bikes I looked at. 8K miles on it so far ….still feels new. I haven’t even uncorked it yet.

I just watched the engine build video...not bad.. In 2017 I completed my 9yr build(took that long to buy and/or build all the parts) and did a similar mod to my engine. However, my 1986 XL600r pushes..... 47.5HP....., with standard bore 11.5:1 piston, Megacycle cam, hand porting, 1mm oversize valves, hand built dual 1.5" exhaust with ZX10 cans, etc.... I guess a DUAL is in order......! I can't post any proof on this message board. But, go to Wolfe Wheels, photos, albums, XL600 Supermoto project and you'll see the proof! (ps... Wizard may be interested on how I did it...??)

picked up a 1998 XR600 from the original owner with less than 4000 kilometres the bike was brand new ,i have to admit i wanted a off road trail bike and i just wasnt equipped to man handle a bike with that weight around bush tracks ,theres only a certain individual that can handle a 600 single cylinder and im more a 250 rider

If you every raced an open class bike, you'll understand just what most miss or simply just don't understand how this class of cycle works. Still though the XR650R is of iron class of motorcycles...it's a rider for sure. Honda nailed it even in it's stock "dependable" form. Honda need not change anything. There is plenty of after market products available to adjust to any riders desires. You need not be a "pit racer" like most you see in content click bait, having to lift the front end to determined whether your some "sort" of "wheelie king" either ....rock on ...

I've had a '97 600R for years and purchased a 2021 650L last August that had 80 miles on it. Basically showroom condition. I've yet to take it off road and think it may never see dirt as I have the 600R for that. I'm about to order the XRsOnly pipe and rejet. What sprockets do you recommend for a daily driver, street/highway driver?

I've got a stock 2016 650xl, did a jet kit and smog delete. I've only put 1600 miles on her, but she's a powerhouse! All my toys have been Honda, there's just no other way to go. Haven't put so many miles because when it comes down to my handlebar freedom, I usually go out on my 06 turbo aquatrax. Another thing Honda should have stuck to.

Rear fender looks higher than stock. How much

Mine was an 03, identical , 39 horses stock. Not sure where you heard 30 ? I was told by a local motorcycle guru to ride this bike like it was stolen. Rev it up , do not lug this design. lugging this design will hone the cylinder walls shiny and remove the machining grooves that help hold oil. I learned to rev this motor and that is when it come s to life ( your comment about it being a slug when stock) Wow, how opinions can vary. Love this design, bullet proof bike.Sweet ride.

In europe the last aircooled 600 was the 2000.after that we had the liquid cooled 650.this 650 L never came.
