Exploring my stamp collection: next through these postage stamps from Bulgaria featuring Old Ancient Trees.
More than just pretty pictures of trees- these stamps actually feature real life ancient trees in Bulgaria and I made it my mission to investigate these sites!
I learned tons about Baikushev's pine, Peshtera's caves, Bulgaria under the rule of the Turks/Ottoman Empire - the Bulgarian Renaissance period & the fountain at Sandanski, Basil II the Bulgar slayer and the battle of Kleidion, the poet Peshkov Slavensko, the European Tree of the Year Contest, and Bulgaria's 'A Tree With Roots' contest. Who knew these little stamps held so much information!

Thanks so much - it was an interesting find! I love how much the 'little details' can reveal in a stamp, so much history packed into that little picture of a stone under a tree!

A viewer posted this comment but I think it was deleted by RU-vid because it contained a link. The comment had some insightful information though so I will just copy paste it here! "Congrats for picking up a new hobby that lends itself to such eclectic anthropological storytelling. Your enthusiasm is very catchy! A bit of context and clarification: apparently the Kavaka in Peshtera collapsed 29 years ago and there is a 13-year old poplar (or cottonwood) tree in its place. Another detail- the Bulgarian coins are called stotinka (stotinki plural) not stotnikas. Happy collecting! :) "

Wow, I have those stamps and you have made them a lot more interesting than I knew. I liked your battle narrative, almost had a Game of Thrones feel to it! Making stamp collecting fun again. Thanks!

I'm still playing catch-up. You may not even see this comment, but "Bulgaria is the oldest country in Europe and the only country that has not changed its name since it was first established In the 7th century AD (681). This is one of the advantages of having a Bulgarian friend.

I see your comment, Don! I'm happy you're making your way through the episodes 😀. Thanks for sharing those facts about Bulgaria, I definitely did not know about that- that's amazing that Bulgaria is so 'ancient' and was able to keep their countries name for so long. Good for Bulgaria!

Yes, I was excited when I found out some of the stories associated with these trees and their locations! Before this I just thought they were generic tree pictures not 'real ones'. Thanks for watching!

Hey, another cool vid. There's another slant on the plane trees. They are meant to be significant for Turkic people, preceding even the ottomans. So the ottomans actually held them in high esteem. There is a tradition that whenever they conquered any lands they would find a source of water nearby and plant a plane tree there. Whether that's the trees in the stamps I guess both sides will dispute. But still, an excellent topic that would have otherwise gone unnoticed..😉👍🏽

That is very interesting! Thanks for sharing! I'm still shocked about how much I learned in general about these trees - all through 'the rabbit hole' of researching these stamps!

A minor mistake those stamps are from 1945
@StampCatStamps
@StampCatStamps 3 года назад
Oh thanks! I'd better fix it .... Is it 1964 though? I'm referencing the 'Colnect' catalogue for my dates. Either way 1965 is not correct.

@@StampCatStamps BAHHH you absolutely right I've mistaken this series with the tree stamps Bulgaria issued in 1945. The correct year for the stamps featuring in your video is 1964
