Bull Moose Shedding His Velvet
A burly Alaskan Bull Moose Shedding demonstrates what it takes to rid his antlers of the velvet that has been nourishing the new bone growth. The bone has stopped growing; this is as large as his antlers will be this year, and now the velvet, which has covered and supplied the growing bone with blood and nourishment, is no longer needed. A rake fest is in order. Enjoy some up close and personal glimpses of a BIG Bull Moose Shedding as he rids himself of his velvet.

I hear moose can be quite dangerous especially rutting bulls and cows with calves. P. S. Where are the best areas in moose habitat to find moose sheds?
@MooseManNaturePhotos
@MooseManNaturePhotos 3 года назад
We use long lenses and maintain a safe distance and always have a tree/trees nearby. These animals can indeed be dangerous, but reading their body language/posturing helps predict what others may not. Best place to find sheds? Well that's anywhere the moose are or go. Sorry, but I can't be more specific because that's pretty much it! I don't know any one area that is any better than others. From Maine to Alaska. Thanks for watching/commenting!

@MooseManNaturePhotos
@MooseManNaturePhotos Год назад
The moose antler grows every year from scratch because they shed them every winter. When the bone is being formed/growing, it is covered with that velvety skin substance that provides all the nourishment with a network of blood vessels and nerves. When the bone is done growing, the velvet dies off and the bulls rake/scrape it off on bushes to rid themselves of it. Revealing their gleaming bone white antlers for the rest of the rut.

Do they eat it like deer do?

They don't chow down on it but we have seen them munch on it some, yes.

Not at all, that would be cruel of nature to do to them. No, it's just part of the process of getting down to their new shiny antlers. Thanks for watching.

It doesn't hurt, it must itch though. And we also want to help them rip it off! It's gone in a couple of days. 🙂

Not at all. They just want it gone, it serves no purpose any longer. Thanks for asking.

@@MooseManNaturePhotos how would you know? Did they tell you themselves?! It clearly hurts, otherwise they wouldn’t be taking breaks, the process would have been much faster! Note: I know nothing about moose and just speculating

So like for a few days this guy walks around with flesh dangling from his antlers. Amazing process although yeah hanging flesh.

It looks gory but doesn't hurt, merely itches, we suspect. Anyway, it's all cleaned off in like 2 days. Sometimes there's a straggler stringer hanging off the back of the paddle, but for the most part, they get them all cleaned off, nice and shiny. Then they get busy raking them, sometimes dying them a darker, mahogany shade given the right trees/brush/branches.It's all amazing, isn't it?

What does it have on its antlers

The velvet it is shedding. After the bone stops growing late August, the bulls shed the velvet that has been nourishing the new bone growth. It comes off in dripping sheets.
