Bullet-proof origami: folding Kevlar shield designed by

BYU mechanical engineers have created an origami-inspired, lightweight bulletproof shield that can protect law enforcement from gunfire. The new ballistic barrier can be folded compactly when not in use, making it easier to transport and deploy. When expanded - which takes only five seconds - it can provide cover for officers and stop bullets from several types of handguns.
“We worked with a federal special agent to understand what their needs were, as well as SWAT teams, police officers and law enforcement, and found that the current solutions are often too heavy and not as portable as they would like,” said Larry Howell, professor of mechanical engineering at #BYU. “We wanted to create something that was compact, portable, lightweight and worked really well to protect them.”
In working with law enforcement, BYU researchers learned much of what is currently used hasn’t evolved much from medieval times: shields that are mostly flat, awkward plates that cover only one person. Current barriers are so heavy and cumbersome they make it difficult for officers to move into position.
The barrier Howell and his colleagues designed is made of 12 layers of bulletproof Kevlar and weighs only 55 pounds (many of the steel-based barriers in current use approach 100 pounds). The BYU-built barrier uses a Yoshimura origami crease pattern to expand around an officer, providing protection on the side in addition to protecting them in the front.
In testing, the barrier successfully stopped bullets from 9 mm, .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum pistols.
“Those are significant handguns with power,” Howell said. “We suspected that something as large as a .44 Magnum would actually tip it over, but that didn’t happen. The barrier is very stable, even with large bullets hitting it.”
The researchers constructed the barrier prototypes to be extremely stiff and protective throughout, while also maintaining the flexible qualities of Kevlar fabric so they can be folded compactly. Since Kevlar fabric is subject to fraying, abrasion and is sensitive to sunlight and water, the team also made a concentrated effort to reinforce it against the environment.
“It goes from a very compact state that you can carry around in the trunk of a car to something you can take with you, open up and take cover behind to be safe from bullets,” said Terri Bateman, BYU adjunct professor of engineering and research team member. “Then you can easily fold it up and move it if you need to advance your position.”
In addition to protecting police officers, researchers believe the barrier could be used to protect children in a school or a wounded person in an emergency situation. Although the ballistic barrier is now just in prototype form and not currently in use by any law enforcement agencies, Howell and Bateman have tested it with officers on site. The response has been positive so far.
“There are a lot of risks to law personnel and we feel like this particular product can really make a difference and save a lot of lives,” Bateman said. “It makes us feel like we’re really making a difference in the world.”

A stress test to the max needs to be know it's true effectiveness. From different types of calibers of firearms. How many bullets can it withstand. The realistic test, put it up in comparison to what criminals are known to favor a type of weapon in that region. Weapons like Ak-47, Assault Rifles, this shield would be deployed in urban environments where firefight are known to happen. This shield prototype should be put in a similar test. Not a small, static, staged controlled scenario. Have officers that have been in firefights and give their input to set up a scenario similar to that and see how it would hold up. Like when raiding a meth lab, or known criminal base of operations. This proves nothing other that stopping a few bullets. Some criminals will keep firing until you are dead, put this against that. If this prototype comes out on top. Law enforcement will fully embrace this and trust it with their lives. Otherwise it will just collect dust and be nothing more than an idea.
@cdgonepotatoes4219
@cdgonepotatoes4219 6 лет назад
well, this thing is more meant for pistol calibers, still, it would be nice to see how it would hold up against more exotic handgun ammunition and then see if there's some hope for it to stop some rifle calibers as well. For first responders this shield is really a step up compared to what they have right now (aka jump behind the car and hope for the best), then for the more hairy situations it's much better for the first responders to immediately call for the adequate backup as, if caught by surprise, you wouldn't really be able deploying the shield, anyway.

Maybe add a little section of cloth or something on the bottom for the user to step on to keep the bottom down while they pull from the top to unfold it. I notice they are currently depending on gravity which is slow and leaves them exposed and fiddling with the device. A bottom piece would also give them something to anchor it or weight it to the ground in windy situations.
@peoplez129
@peoplez129 7 лет назад
They need to anchor it regardless, because without it a single bullet would be enough force to shoot it out of position.
@jordanwalsh1691
@jordanwalsh1691 7 лет назад
A back of the envelope calculation tells me that at the top of the energy range for 44 magnum (2078 Joules from Wikipedia), the energy would be sufficient to accelerate a 55 pound barrier to 12.9 metres per second. I didn't work out the equivalent impact force, but it's probably enough to tip it over if the bullet strikes near the top, especially because the footing front to back is so shallow. For the test they show though, there is a substantial wooden support being used, visible around 1:41 in the video. I think they need to do some more testing to figure out what happens if it's shot unsupported, and what happens to the person holding it if they're relying on a person to keep it upright when shot. Also, kevlar vests have a maximum back face deformation requirement, which I'm sure they plan to test also, but from the straightforward penetration tests shown here, they won't know whether someone could suffer broken bones or other injuries if they are in contact with the point of impact.
@Cr-gf3gn
@Cr-gf3gn 7 лет назад
yes, i thought that about the body contact.. but as regards movement backwards, there is no solid resistance, inititial impact is converted into a wave motion extending to the extremities of the barrier
@9oreos308
@9oreos308 7 лет назад
Jordan Walsh we shot it without any supports at the end of the day. It didn't budge. We thought the 44 would knock it over as well, but it barely moved. It's hard to do calculations on fabric absorbing a bullet.
@jordanwalsh1691
@jordanwalsh1691 7 лет назад
Interesting, I certainly wouldn't have expected the energy to be converted entirely from kinetic to other forms without disrupting the barrier, but it sounds like your results speak for themselves. Congrats on a successful project.

I think this coupled with synthetic sapphire plating could be extremely efficient versus any caliber projectile. Synthetic sapphire has been recently undergoing research and they've found that it has decimated every small arm & long rifle projectile dispensed at it. The only thing you might need to worry about is stray rounds slipping through the creases where the armor would be the weakest.

Not if they make it heavier. It will weight 50 pounds, but they could add 5 or 10 more pounds if needs be. Plus it will only withstand small caliber bullets. If they make it heavier it could stop a rifle bullet, but it will be more challenging to carry or even unfold. The good news is that it can stop small handguns, but the bad news is a rifle round will go through it like butter let alone a 50 cal round.

This is a great innovative product but a federal agent or police officer is blind until he pops his head up over the shield or peaks out from around the sides. In certain situations this could be very hazardous... I would suggest that you think of including 3" vision ports of Bullet Proof Lexan to the top layers so that a officer can best guage when to return fire, "exposing himself" or be able to know if a suspect is rushing his position. Just like a soldier in a trench, popping your head up for a look @ could result in a gunshot to the head!, - but I admit it is better than the existing car door or nothing at all currently.

usually lowlife criminals aren't that good at aiming, so it's more the stray shots that are dangerous. here in my country there's been a shooting involving a gang: tons of lead flying but sadly none of the criminals got injured; on the up side, none of the bystanders around got injured either and the police managed to take in custody two of the guys involved in the shooting. Being able to have some kind of cover that's guaranteed to protect you from pistol calibers is a huge advantage, specially if it's light enough to carry as it's deployed.

The Samurais used to have soft silk streamers . They discovered that it would catch and dissipate the energy of arrows and spears. The Same here. TL;DR: You made a black folding visual barrier to break lines of sight. This is for the purpose of inaction. The 90 pound shield is for the dynamic entry and taking control of the situation and using the advantage of the initiative. I guess it's better than standing behind a car or what ever, but realistically I would not let anyone use this as cover just as it is. Also, that 44 magnum had almost the shortest barrel length possible for the cartridge. You could see the projectile in the cylinder through the muzzle! That equals in to less speed = poorer penetration. If the .357 is also shot from a small frame .38 special type short barreled gun... yeeeeea, nope. There are nasty high speed bullets and heavy projectiles out there that this thing will not catch even if you would double it up.

Interesting idea. Reminds me of those deployable shields from some first person shooter games. Here is an idea for you guys: Develop a grenade you can throw, which opens up a shield using explosive force. The detonation would be just enough to force open the initial housing of the device, and once it opens up, the shield springs into action. This would require it however, to be independent of directional attributes because it would have to work regardless of the axis of the grenade upon opening up. May be a engineering challenge to the extreme though. Being able to fit something in such a small device and deploy successfully under such stress from a explosive force could render it not so plausible. This may ultimately be a materials problem.
@cdgonepotatoes4219
@cdgonepotatoes4219 6 лет назад
even if that would be possible, what you're saying not only would be a huge challenge to create, but it would probably cost its weight in diamonds, so it wouldn't be cost effective even if given only to the most elite military or police.
@tygill7401
@tygill7401 6 лет назад
Precisely you wouldn’t be able to pack Kevlar into such a small device I would assume and with the materials they used in the video stuffing the entirety of it wouldn’t be possible. Also you have to consider the explosive mechanism it would have to fit into the object as well and be strong enough to only deploy said shield without completely obliterating it. Wonder if they thought of this and just went with origami instead

Interesting, but often they are subject to multiple shots of gunfire. I would be interested to see how well this hold up vs say, multiple rounds fired withen seconds (automatic handguns) or even high powered rifle rounds or shotgun slugs( 25% of armed robberies and hostage situations are done with those weapons)

DIGGY DODGES They can shoot at it all they want, but they’ll miss most of their shots. Which either hit the shield or go above their heads. In most firefights, accuracy is secondary to number of rounds fired because the stress of combat sends accuracy down the drain. Shaking hands, that sort of thing.

Or more importantly, invent a version that stops rifle bullets. Portable cover is a very good idea, but so far this seems of limited practicality

When police can get free armoured Humvees and MRAPs I don't see the need to buy these. Most shootings happen so fast you would not have time to deploy it would be quicker to use your squad car as cover and parts of the car can even stop rifle rounds something this shield cant do. In the longer siege situations wait to bring in armoured vehicles that can stop even high powered rifles.

ImSpartacus UHDPE is very expensive. Also it doesn't stop steel core rifle ammo which is prevalent. What these engineers were looking to do is create a lightweight deployable cover system that can be easily packed which they have done. Now if they can transfer this design into something that will stop rifle rounds I am sure the DoD will be giving them a call.
@thezombikilla
@thezombikilla 7 лет назад
Its not about rifles being cheap. The fact is most criminals don't carry rifles, the vast majority of gun crime in the US is committed with pistols. And to make something rated for rifle rounds it would either need to be ceramic or steel which is not practical at all in this scenario.

oh wow that's really smart, the shield looks like it displaces a lot of the power from the bullet due to the fabrics. Not only do you have the 12 layers but the force is spread out within the surrounding area, making the bullet do less damage/penetration. Well Done

Should stop a slug, its big and slow but looks like ittl have enough energy to knock it over, but 5.56 green tip might penetrate, anything higher like 308, or 30-60 would punch through no issue (similar issue with us military helmets) they cant stop larger rifle caliber rounds.

Kent Livingston 12ga slug would fold it up or knock it down, the .357 almost did. Most bulletproof vests will stop a 12ga slug but leave the wearer dead due the hydro shock force to the organs.

If the shield used UHMWPE style plates on the flat parts (A newer type of plastic level 3 body armor) of the shield, backed up with that Kevlar, you'd have a pretty effective shield, one which could stop FMJ 55 grain ball .223 etc. while keeping the weight of the shield still "low".
