Bullet Shell Survival Whistle 

My grandma showed us how to make those once; she regretted it immediately, little kids + high pitched whistles = bad time for the adults in the house. lol

Instructions not clear. Whistled into a 50 cal bullet and blew my head off.

As an Australian, I find it hilarious that you're more likely to find a bullet shell than an actual whistle.

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He doesn't seem to be breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps, "My friend is dead! What can I do?" The operator says, "Calm down. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead." There is a silence; then a gun shot is heard. Back on the phone, the guy says, "OK, now what?"

I'm lost in a forest and this video just saved my life.

The only problem is that here in Europe you don't find empty bullet casings in the forest, or if you do, it's rather alarming

I think that if you're lost in a forest and start finding bullet casings around, you probably have bigger issues.

Very cool. :-) If you decide to make it at home, instead of grinding it all the way down, just use a 32TPI hacksaw blade to trim off the end.

Clearly there is enough guns in the US that you can just find bullet shells when you're lost.

To everyone who is saying "Yeah because bullets grow in the woods" I have to remember your that hunting with rifles exist ;)

When you're traveling in well hunted areas, it's very common to find a variety of rifle/shot shells, depending on the type of hunting. I'm in Georgia. We have every shape rock you can imagine. And stacked (flat) rock walls are littered around the countryside. So, if you pay attention to your surroundings (and just happen to have a metal detector... lol) you'll be surprised at what you can find. And if you happen to be carrying a rifle and get lost or hurt, u can make this whistle with your multi-tool (or Swiss army knife, file included) in just a few minutes. My father tought me this trick when I was a kid one day on a hunting trip and, a typical kid, was bored to death. Of course the second I finished he took it away so I wouldn't scare away the rabbits or whatever we were hunting. (In Canada, the snowshoe bunnies could be a couple feet tall and weigh up to 20lbs). I turned a bunch of 9mm shells into push-pins, guess it's time to make a bunch of .223 whistles. :) Have fun!

Innovative use of a used casing. It reminds me of hickory and/or willow whistles I made as a boy 70+ years ago! Same principle. Harbor Freight sells an almost identical whistle, but it is made of aluminum. . I am always looking for used discards to amke something NEW & USEFUL! Thanks for the video

This is what we need nowadays. These videos are short but cool, useful and practical unlike the videos such as melting candy and creating useless pringle towers!

Nice, my grandfather used to make similar from young willow branches and bark (possible only in early spring when bark can be separated from branch to form a tube) and rest is the same - work with knife use bark and two wooden plugs. If I recall it lasts only until it dries and stops to be airtight.

Very simple and looks like it could be fun to make. I actually keep a .223 case wrapped in electrical tape (I like more than one use for things) in my compass pouch on my pack for a whistle. I use it like making a bottle whistle, holding it below my lip and blowing down, and it is also VERY loud.

What state are you from? you're view from the backyard is amazing in other videos with snow topped peaks in the background, is it Colorado by any chance?

I have seen some bird calls that take after the principles of this design of whistle. I wonder if that can be a future project idea. That would definitely make such a whistle more useful especially if such a piece could be removed at will to have a variety of lures if that would apply.

Seems like a lot of extra work when you can blow into the top like a jug or bottle but with more force.

I was taught to tighten up the muscles in your face (an embouchure) and get a shell, put the top to your lips and have it going up your chin. So the shell's top is in front of your lips, 90 degrees. And just blow, and a very loud echo haunts the forest( a .22 is a dog whistle)

The people who are complaining about not being able to find casings. In a deep forest like a hunting ground, you might be able to, not to mention, maybe you were the one hunting and can get a casing. It's just something that is possible to find in a forest/campground Ect. As for people complaining about grinding it on concrete, again not impossible, but realize he is showing you a very sped up "Polished" version of the whistle, I'm sure one could find a solid rock of some shape that would work,

As a boy scout, we learnt to make clench our hands together, leaving our thumbs parallel and blowing in between the two knuckles.

what people don't realize is; out in the forest/woods its actually kind of common to find a rifle casing due to hunters. you can also carve the metal down with (as he said) a sharp rock.

uh,... if you're finding .223 in the forest floor...run, and don't blow that whistle key up deliverance music...haha

Could you do the same thing with 410 or 12 gauge shells? There being plastic would seem to make them easier to modify even if they produce a lower note due to there larger diameter .

I found that if you use an acorn cap (the top part) and make a "V" with both your thumbs and blow into it it works probably just the same or even louder if I'm honest. Not only is it super effective it is much easier to do.

You can do the same with a bamboo stick or similar if you find one where you're, I used to do them when I was a kid.

I love it because I can actually make it since I don't need all the fancy tools you have :)
