Butt splices would be an upgrade from the scotch locks I've seen on brand new trailers! I've found the quickest way to improve reliability of your trailer lighting is to switch to LEDs... they require such a small current that they can tolerate some really shady wiring lol

growing up I worked at a motorcycle shop and being the new guy they had me on wiring jobs. we'd always get the hillbilly wiring jobs on old Harley's, I don't even know how many I've wired up. I always cut the plastic off my wiring ends and pinched, soldered the shrink tubed them. really makes them last on a vibration machine like an old shovel head.

After I mount and verify the ground I use a can of truck bed coating and cover the screw/bolt/connector and all around it with a few coats so it keeps the corrosion out.

Good stuff Rich. The old man's flatbed trailer is a mess again. Northern Ohio's winters suck for trailer wiring as well. You mentioned everything i am planning to do to his trailer so I don't have to do it again.

Yes I sometimes use used industrial 12 GA. extension cords . The insulation on them last for years out in the elements.

I liked what you did but there is something you can add to even make it better. Take a 1/4 x 3/4 stainless steel bolt and mig weld the head of the bolt to the trailer then you can bolt your grond wire down and you will never loose a ground. I usually take a piece of 4 inch square tubing cut off 2 inches long and weld it to the tongue to form a junction box. I weld (2) 1/4 rod nuts on the inside of the box for threads so I can bolt the cover on. The reason for the box is so you can connect the short cord for the trailer connector there and you do not have to climb under the trailer to make your connections. I usually just use wire nuts and make sure the nuts are turned so they do not hold water. Also if you drill a hole by your tail lights you can add a stainless bolt by each light. Drill the hole insert the bolt, weld the head and make the connection inside the tail light box.

I know this is 2 years old but why not go around chassis grounds all together and run every ground back to the 4 or 7 pin receiver? Running current through a copper wire is way better than running it through plain carbon steel.

I redid the wiring in my trailer years ago and have had absolutely no issues since. I followed these rules: 1) No scotchlocks. 2) Absolutely no chassis grounds. Every light has a ground back to the 4 or 7 pin. 3) No wires contacting metal. 4) No lengths of wires that are capable of flopping up and down. 5) Deutsch connectors only. There's a reason these are what's used on 18 wheelers and marine applications.

Good idea with the conduit, my only trailer came from the sea side, and whilst it's oddly ok as rust goes, the wiring is shot. It's almost as if someone took a rodent to all the terminals and exposed sections, so conduit should fix that.

Just a simple comment for axle wire longevity of the cable that is routed to the back side of the axle or any part. Any gravel roads will eat it up! Where gravel has Sandblasted , protect with old garden hose then Zip-tie or double wire wrap.

I just did new submersible lights (flat four wire harness) on my boat trailer, soldered, heat shrink tubing all neat and tidy...you would have been proud of me Rich lol. I heard somewhere that when testing the lights if the 4-way flashers are working then all signal and brake lights will also be correct...is that true? Cheers.

Hello sir, I love this video. Could you share with me a little more details on how your wired the trailer. I want to wire my car trailer using the wire and junction box you used. Did you run one ground from the brakes or separate per axel. Details like that i you could. thank you very much.
@steevemachine118

The NUMBER ONE mistake people do when they wire (or rewire) a trailer is using a chassis ground. I NEVER use the trailer frame because it rusts! I run a ground for each and every device I am putting on the trailer. For electric brakes, I always run a power wire (blue) and a chassis wire (white) wire to each wheel. It's the one and most important thing you wish to be bulletproof! People think it's a waste of time and money, but...it doesn't take any more time to run 2 wires when you're already running one! My customers never come back because of a bad ground! The second is using pvc insulated shrinkable butt connectors. You would be surprised on how many badly crimped connections I found over the years! People think that their connections are okay, but they use the wrong tool to crimp the connectors and end up with loose ones. When completed, the pvc shrink is the only thing keeping the joint from coming apart! I always use non-insulated butt connectors. I crimp both ends, fill the connectors with tin solder ( I never use acid paste flux), and put a waterproof heat shrinkable tubing (lined with hot melt glue) on every connection.

I had to check this out when I saw DG. I thought it was Dollar General stores wiring trailers! Video was ok except when you said you were going to pack that junction box with grease. All I could thing of was A) as soon as it gets really hot out, you'd have grease dripping all over your driveway, and B) Grease conducts electricity, so you would have one big connection lighting up all your fittings. Don't do that!
@patrickperry6945
@patrickperry6945 3 года назад
Dielectric grease. Silicone based. But just grease the connections, not “fill it up”. But I have to admit. Trlr lights are the most exasperating systems. I have to redo ‘em every time I want to use one of my trlrs.

I don't think they are worth the money. I find the individual LED's burn out and it looks terrible. I don't think they last much longer than conventional bulbs.
@anttiroppola4414
@anttiroppola4414 8 лет назад
I find LEDs last better here in Oz. Bulbs always rattle loose, no problems since I replaced all ghe lights on my trailers with LEDs. Crummy roads here I guess.
@oby-1607
@oby-1607 5 лет назад
LED lights are better. They come on quicker and are brighter. They also use less current draw. They will have individual LEDs fail so they are not perfect. On everything I own, I replace with LED, headlights, taillights, side markers, light bars etc.
@carlspackler91
@carlspackler91 5 лет назад
When buying LED lights, like anything else, you get what you pay for, if you pay for good stuff up front it will come back to you in longevity or at the vey least in a good warranty. Get fixtures with good quality LED chips like Cree or Osram and you are far less likely to have problems with single chip burn out. Nothing is perfect of course but you can tip the scales greatly in your favor.

No salt on roads were I live so I dont have a lot of the dramas you have But todays useless information !!!! When using a little blow torch for heat shrink or even for heating up plastic pipe or conduit to bend it, if you run some tape around were the air goes at the rear of the shroud it will burn a yellow flame and will be a lot less likely to burn black spots on what ever you are heating Think back to your school days with bunson burner in science class and you twist the little air vent around to make the flame hot or cool They may not even use bunson burners at schools , it has been a few decades since I was at school LOL
