The video is for the "trailer plug" Only. This video explains the index location of each trailer plug function & the "standard wire colors" for TRAILER WIRING. The video is NOT attempting to point out vehicle plug wiring as each manufacturer uses different colors but the function of each location should be standard.
@@dfox344 leave it disconnected. You don't need it in a 4 wire setup. That's only for charging batteries on a ebrake trailer or for interior lights in a enclosed trailer or something similar.
i'm an "electrically challenged" boomer who has always been a complete goof with trailer lights. with your picture, i had tailights, turn signals, and brake lights in fifteen minutes! much thanks.
Thank you for a very clear video for wiring these correctly. I had to completely redo a dealer's job that had my right turn signal applying the brakes. Your explanation made it very easy to rewire in the proper locations of the truck's connector. I appreciate it.
When I bought my first trailer, some 40 years ago, the dealer took my truck in and rewired the truck and trailer together. We had a major trailer theft ring in the area with trailers disappearing to Mexico - sometimes with the horses still in the trailer. The rewire from the trailer dealer ship switched things around a bit so that if the trailer was hitched to a standard wired truck the running lights would flash when the brakes were applied. This ultimately broke the ring and saved hundreds of horses and trailers. I have rewired all my trailers ever since. I now own a trailer that I lend to friends, and so need to rewire it. Your explanation of location rather than colour solved my confusion over which wire needs to go where. Thank you so very much! Going out now to make it all work.
This video saved my marriage! After two unsuccessful attempts at following the color coding on the plug, I watched your video and landed the wire where you showed and bam. Every light worked like it should. Thank you very much!
I bought a replacement plug after wearing mine out after having it fall out on a road trip and dragging on the ground for who knows how many miles. Manufacter directions starting at the white wire and going clockwise is white/red/green/black/brown/blue and yellow in the center. Much to my surprise, nothing worked right. I re-wired it using your instructions and VOILA! Perfect. Thank you, sir! How would I ever have done this without you??? Do you know how many youtube videos show the same mistake? Almost all of them. What kind of crazy world is out there?
Yo bro I do thank you for the video you must be wiring a ford or another truck ,our plug messed up on our work truck and I need this video ,and I wired everything up like you showed and on a Chevy it's backwards I turned on the right signal and left signal on the trailer started blinking I hit the brakes and the horn started blowing bro lol so I wired it all the other way and it works now lol
I just viewed you're video, I'm a novice, Diy'er who thanks to this video have an intelligent understanding of trailer wiring. Thank you.👍 I'm learning to do all my own work with success, for myself, and helping someone in need of trailer wiring.
You are the BEST for sharing this video in the way you did. Thank you so much! I just bought a trailer and was on a tight schedule to tow it to my next location and my FJ cruiser had a different adapter than the trailer.
Never got along with my stepfather so there's a ton of stuff about cars I never learned as kid/young man. This is one of those things. Thanks for a simple but in depth explanation of what goes where and why, just got my trailer socket wired up and it's all working first go.
4yrs later, Thank You Sir! 6months go I spent almost a whole day matching different color wires only after initially crimping every wire thinking I had it. Now new project and found this video very informative.
Thank you you are the only one who speaks to surge / hydraulic brake set up, no one talks about Boat trailers? No need backups lights on boat trailer Aloha
The after market 7pin I bought has the color wires wrong. Literally took nearly 2 days worth of fighting with it, 3 arguments with the wife. And then I found your video. Had it done and installed correctly and working in 30 minutes. Thank you!
Man, I'm telling you, I've been watching videos on this and I'm having a hell of a time wiring lights on my 1966 Alladin travel trailer. I'm ready to hire a professional. But you've got the best video on this 7 wire deal I've seen. I'm going to go around and ground every individual fixture. That has to be the problem. Anyway thanks man.
Man I have been trying to figure this out all morning. Thanks so much for explaining this like you did. RU-vid needs to make this the top video suggestion
Big help ! Getting ready to add a wireless camera to my enclosed trailer that needs to run off the running lights. Brown wire for power white wire for ground! learned something today. THANK YOU
Great tutorial on wiring a trailer plug! I like the fact that you've identified each pin by its function. I know there's 2 schools on grounding lights. One is as you mentioned, running a single ground wire to all fixtures. The other is grounding each fixture individually. I prefer the latter method due to the fact if you loose that single ground point all your lights will go out. You're correct to point out that you should never rely on the hitch/ball for a reliable ground! Anyway, excellent presentation and great job explaining the function of all the pins.
Thank you, thank you my brother for being so plain and thorough with explaining the wiring. You used common sense which is not so common. Again, thank you.
Hi Dustin, just wanted to say thanks for such a great video. You are very clear and concise in your presentation. You have a career in teaching ahead of you.
I watched this video a little over a year ago and it seemed very informative and educational so I saved the link just so i can come back and watch it if I ever needed to.. So now like a little over a year later I’m back to watch this again because the plastic rubber around the plug🔌 on my trailer cracked and broke in little pieces due to the extreme cold weather here in Winnipeg Canada 🍁 but I’m super happy and very thankful to you sir for helping us fixing this issue. I have had watched few videos people trying to show how to do this job but you did it in a very simple and easy way for anyone to be able to do the job. There was a little issue with the wires I was trying to figuring out… I had all of the above colours shown in the videos except the red! I instead had these - brown, yellow, white, green and 2 blue ones. I connected all the ones as you’ve mentioned and I connected one of the blue to the trailer brake and the other replaced the red . Thank you Dustin.
A very good video. For the novice , always be sure to mention that you have removed the protective cover from the new 7 blade connector when attaching the wires, and that we are watching the wiring instructions while looking at the screw terminals inside the trailer connector itself. It is confusing as your drawing could easily be mistaken for the outside of the connector when connecting the wires. Im one of those who was confused myself and had to seek other diagrams to verify what you were explaining...Also mention that even though there is a standard color code, that many manufacturers often dont use standard code, and often will also use any wire color available to extend wires underneath the trailer to reach the trailer connector. Ive just bought my second used factory built trailer where the builder didnt follow the color codes . Thanks and great video....
I’ve got a Toyota Sienna mini van. I am having to swap green and yellow. I’m supposed to have reverse but don’t. Brakes work great. Saved me 7-14 days and who knows how much money. Thanks very much.
Lots of great advice-Thanks! The reverse circuit can be used for 2 other things- to power a WiFi camera on the back of the trailer (back up lights help these cameras a lot at night too) and to pwoer a back up warning device. (On a car you can use the back up light circuit to power the camera.)
Thank you. I've been trying to wire my 7 plug for days now and after watching your video it only took me about 10 minutes and its done. Great video and it'll probably save some live. Please keep them coming.
Thanks Dustin, you did a great job of explaining trailer wiring in layman's terms. I did notice one thing about the way you described the signal going thru the brake circuit. What you said only applies to a non-proportional controller and just as a side note I have found that newer integrated brake controlers don't send any voltage at all if there is not a complete circuit present. So if you check the plug on the back of your truck for signal you may not get one at all which would lead you to think there was a blown fuse when there is actually nothing wrong.
"When the sun goes down, I hope this makes you brighter. " lol love it! This guy is an exemplar of what happens when experience meets intelligence! Thank you, sir!
Nice clear video, I bought a set of temporary/emergency lights and had to replace the 7 Pin plug as it just didnt fit in the socket all the way, not sure why. It was wired the exact opposite of your diagram, the ground was on the right side of the plug and so on. It was a little confusing until I watched your video and figured it was all opposite wired.
Damn. I've spent the better part of the day trying to wrap my head around the logic of trailer wiring (like, why is there a 4 pole and a seven pole option), and you cleared the whole thing up in a 12 minute video. Automatic subscribe.
U ARE SUCH A GREAT TEACHER MY FRIEND ...!!! I Love Ur video mainly because I have a broken memory ... but when U related the colors with the position in the connector ,,, Wow .!! That was an enlightening moment for mi ..! Thank U So Much Dusting ..!
Thank you so much. I am in the process of re wiring my grand daughters horse trailer. I knew that i could do it but could not understand how the running lights on top were connected.. now i do. Just shows even a granny can do anything. Thanks again
Dustin, I am new to all of this and your video explained every question I had concisely and simply. Thank you for taking the time to do this for hacks like me!
Thank you for posting this - we’re a body shop and we’re fixing a 2021 Silverado that got hit in the back and everything got ripped off the trailer connector- thank you
One thing to add is that color code is for non-rv trailers. The RV industry, and the majority of aftermarket trailer wiring products, uses a different color code. The only three wires that are the same are the ground (white), electric brakes (blue), and 12V charging (black, not red) Having two different color codes is extremely confusing if one does not realize there are two codes. Another thing that is super confusing is forgetting which way one is looking at either the vehicle or trailer plug when wiring it. Are you facing the front of the vehicle or the back of the trailer? Facing the rear makes your diagram backwards. Keep making these helpful videos. 👍👍
Thanks. Yeah I also made a "how to diagnose a plug layout" video to help with Chinese & non typical color codes. But it doesn't get near the views this does.
Great job you conveyed it very well. Thank you very much. The other RU-vidrs want a be. You explained it very simple to work even I could understand, Are my granddaughter
Thank you! it helped me a lot, i have a f350 2006 that doesn't work, and my Rv needs those lights working, i can't find out what's wrong with it, but your video helped me to understand the wiring better.
Such a great job Dustin. Man you nailed it.. Now I have a request for you to do a video, Without adding any extra wires either. Change a 4 wire connector on a trailer to a 7 pin wire trailer and everything still works fine. The only thing I can remember when seeing it done was he ended up placing the two brown wires on one screw terminal. Everything else was almost if not exactly as you do a regular 7 pin hookup to a pig tail. Now how about a great diagram and video as the 7 pin hookup was for this 4 wire to 7 wire and pin hookup, and still have everything working. Thanks you are the Man!!!!!!!!!!! Doug
Follow this video bud. 4 wires are: Yellow: Left stop/turn Green: Right stop/turn Brown: running lights White: ground The only reason you'd have 2 wires is if you had double Brown & White wires to run down both sides of the trailer. You're still only using 4 terminals.
@@DustinApple Okay I got that now how does the Elec. Brake wire Hook up. From the Pigtail it is Blue.. What does it hook up to on the 4 wire setup. Dustin.???
OK Dennis I got all the other reply accomplished. I still have a Red Wire And a Blue wire left over. My Utility Trailer has electric brakes. I have no more wires coming from my trailer to match up with these. How do I connect the Blue Wire to What already has been done to have Elec. Brakes. Then there is the red wire from the 7 pin also left over - Where does it connect to, with only the 4 wires coming from the trailer. Thanks very much...I have got to have this done by next Friday afternoon as I am going to pick up a farm tractor 3 states away from me and going to need everything working fine.
I am rewiring my husband's '99 F350 dump truck to accept a 4-7 prong plug as his Christmas gift. Your awesome video helped answer a couple of questions I had. Someone in the truck's past did a very sloppy job wiring in a 6 pin. They even connected the wires in a way I can't believe ever worked. I've lost count of all the trailers I've wired and have never seen one done so badly. I even wired a 1942 Willys from front to back entirely but this is my first time working on my husband's "Dumpy". Installing his new brake lights was easy but I've been putting off the trailer plug. Send a lady some good luck vibes. Thanks! :)
Thank you for this! I bought an old pop up camper and the harness was working for the most part but something was off. When I opened it I had a loose wire and 2 empty spaces for it to go. I didn't know which space to put it till I watched your video. I don't know if it's an aftermarket thing, but I have 2 large gauge wires and 4 smaller ones, if I put it in the order that you have it, the large black wire is my positive and the large white wire, which was loose, is my negative. So my negative was floating around and periodically bumping into my positive and that was causing my problems. Thanks again for the help!
