overall temperature is only one component of thermal conductivity. its measured in watts of power transmitted by an area. you can put whatever you want on those headers, even the high tech black ceramic heat tiles from the space shuttle, they will still heat up to the same temperature as the exhaust. but they wont transmit the heat outwards into the air or the body of the car. source - engineer and car guy Here is a good real world example... if you leave a piece of steel and wood outside in the sun, they will both heat up to the same temperature. but if you pick up the steel it will burn the piss out of you, and the wood will just feel hot to the touch. the steel conducts heat to your hand much faster. thats what you are trying to prevent

Headles Norseman thanks for that info! Ive got a set of pacesetter longtubes that come with a non hi heat temp paint that comes off once u the headers are installed. I want to strip down the paint to leave the steel bare. They are not stainless they are just steel. Therefore they will rust. Everyone i know have applied this hi heat vht stuff that just ends up flaking off and being a waste of money so i wont go that route. The manufacturer sais to not install header wrap as it will rapidly start the rusting proccesse of my headers. What do you think i should do. Just say fuck it and wrap them. And during wet days just leave the car runing for an extra 5 min before shutting it off to allow the moisture and water to dry. Is that a good idea? Or what. Somone help

@Headless Norseman.. Thoughts on wrapped manifold in front of turbo, obviously the exhaust gas temp will be much hotter heading into the turbo so potentially melted vanes or shortened life of turbo? Vehicle used for long 5+ hour trips. When I was younger I thought I could improve on engineers jobs, now I am older I know better..
@headlesnorseman701

Aaron Kent wrapping the exhaust between the manifold and turbo? It should be fine, the turbo can take the heat. You might want to use a something like a plate style heat shield though if you want to keep the temp down inside the turbo.

The header is hotter because you've kept the heat localized onto the header where it is more beneficial for exhaust velocity and decreasing engine bay heat spread. On the stock heat shield, temperatures on the shield are lower because the heat is being dispersed into the bay with a larger surface. Not keeping it localized on the header. Just a bit misinforming in the video.
@GG-cn6es
@GG-cn6es 3 года назад
the heat shield is colder because it doesnt have exhaust gasses flowing through it. take the heat shield off and the stock headers would be 400F just like the aftermarket ones
@BigBadJohn
@BigBadJohn 6 лет назад
When you coat a header to control heat you're reducing the exhaust tubes ability to radiate heat. What that means is it would be more scientific to mount a piece of metal near the headers and then take temperature reading from it before and after. There are a few products that you can apply inside the tube as well. In a northern climate this isn't that important but if you regularly see temperatures in the triple digits it can really make a lot of difference. Taking a temp reading on the tube won't properly show the difference in heat transmission. It's also important to know that there are header wraps that can be painted. In a case like that I paint the header, wrap it and then paint the wrap. This helps protect the wrap and also locks it in place. If you plan to paint the wrap then only overlap it by 1/4 inch. Bullet you can make an custom aluminum heat shield for your header that mimics the stock manifold shield as well and really lower your temps.

You dont need to wet the titanium header wrap. Do you know why you wrap your headers? The reason is because when you wrap the header, you keep the heat in, making it really hot. The higher temps will increase exhaust gas velocity....that's why you are supposed to wrap your headers.
@Texas_Road_Warrior
@Texas_Road_Warrior 6 лет назад
HITMIX HYEPOCK my guess is the wrap doesn’t allow the header to cool down by releasing heat into the air... where as the unwrapped header isn’t insulated and transfers heat to the air, this would mean the ambient air temperature rises which explains why the headers appear 100° cooler as they release heat into the air...
@hitmixhyepock9405
@hitmixhyepock9405 6 лет назад
@@Texas_Road_Warrior yeah it's not allowing heat energy to escape out of the pipe wall as much forcing it out the rear..to a certain point. Too much heat being held in will crack your headers/make them brittle.

Maybe on a car? I can tell you for a fact that on a Harley 2 into 1 headers will increase HP noticeably. I added a cam and a high performance carb and saw marginal gains, after the exhaust was added it was night and day difference. It allowed those other parts to do what they were designed to do. Adding a set of headers alone will not make it ready for race day, but proper breathing of an engine is critical for HP gains.

Wrap your Headers,and wrap the body of the Starter you'll see a huge improvement in power, and your starter will stop acting up. My Grandpa had an old Chevy Bel-air it had that same issue he would drive for thirty minutes to an hour every Sunday to keep her fluids turned, and fresh. He would park it for 5 minutes too fuel it up, and the starter sounded really weak as he tried firing it up, he tried new starters, and Batteries and nothing changed it. Well he had a friend tell him he needed to wrap his exhaust, and Starter with Some Thermal Barrier tape, or Heat wrap. He did just that with me in about an hour and a half, and sure enough he never had an issue again with a hot starter giving him problems.

You should NOT take a measure at the first day of wrapping (i have wrapped my exhaust too) because the material is still wet You have 2 options 1) drive and everybody will horn to you ''hey something is burning in your engine'' due to the smoke that will produced from inside your hood 2) do it in your backyard when your car is idlying but this will take much more time and effort. Nevertheless YOU MUST let the wrapping dry before taking any measures with your thermometer otherwise you get faults results.

Nice video.. Clearly shows that if you intend to daily drive your car in traffic or the likes and want other components in your engine bay to have a longer life..stick with the stock exhaust manifold and heat shield.. as engineered by the manufacturer and forget the headers... The hotter the surface the more heat it radiates.. The best would be headers that come with a heat shield built around them.. But that is asking too much from the header companies.. Lol

the heat your reading is on the header wrap and headers, not the engine compartment, the header wrap stores all the heat inside of it increasing its internal heat, this also aides in the exhaust function, hence manifolds are thick iron, with a shield on the top elbow where the highest heat shall concentrate there and it being closest to the cylinder. what would be great is sensors inside the engine compartment near plastic while driving, and thermal checking with your laser meter all other objects underhood, they ideally should be cooler. Ceramic coating the headers is best way to go, regardless if you wrap. although my 302 torino 1973 loved wrapped headers.
@greengodaytona9373
@greengodaytona9373 3 года назад
Eh.. The hotter a surface the more heat it radiates.. The wraps should help keep the heat inside the header and not allow it to get to the surface of the wrap.. Just like the heat shield does for the exhaust manifold.. This test clearly shows header wraps are no where near as good as a heat shield when it comes to keeping heat under control in your engine bay..

@TeksTherapy
@TeksTherapy Год назад
Considering that HEAT will eventually KILL things in your engine compartment, I think it's a horrible idea to add the wrap, it only made the engine compartment hotter. MORE HEAT = LESS HORSEPOWER. On a 4 cylinder NA engine, headers add negligible horsepower anyway and now you add headers which run hotter than your factory manifold and heatshield and to me it sounds like your actually LOSING HORSEPOWER! Anyone else think the same way?
@waynesanders1406
@waynesanders1406 3 года назад
The exhaust pipes themselves WILL be hotter because the heat is being contained inside so it doesn't bake everything else around it. If it's +100 degrees that means there's that much less radiating into the surrounding engine bay.

I can grab hot plate out of the oven with a MIT - the pot is still hot. Now that you have rapped your header with rapping ur not allowing radiant heat to escape from the header. This means the the radiant temperatures in the engine compartment are going to be higher. Just as the heat gun shows. Heat raps are no good, way more draw backs than pluses unless your using turbos. Spend the cash and ceramic coat the header and get a metal heat shield that can be molded. the engine compartment will be way cooler.

thanks for the video. seems to me the conclusion is more about how temperature is measured and limitations of an IR thermometer. Maybe another way to measure the heat would be to put a remote oven thermometer in the engine compartment, close the hood, and track the air temperature. Doing a before and after, and making sure the outside air temp and sun conditions are similar would give good info. You could also add in a 15 minute run down the expressway on cruise control.

Sorry, but that's not a true comparison .. Put a heat shield over headers and you'll get a lower temp reading from the shield as heat has already been lost ...That's why the bolt reads hotter because it is connected to the manifold itself..Heat shields are there to protect you and the manifold will be a lot hotter underneath Put a heat shield over the headers and you will get a lower reading on the head shield again like the first reading you took The gun you are using too is not accurate on reflective surfaces either.... Ceramic coatings are well proven to reduce total engine bay temperatures by an average of 25 degrees or so ..Heat wrap done with good quality can reduce surface temp by 30 degrees or more too ..I know, it had made a HUGE difference to my Hot Rod and spark plug caps

Header wraps are designed to keep the heat in the header to improve the scavenging of the cylinders. Keeping the heat in the header allows the exhaust speed to remain high. (the right idea) Header wraps, by keeping the heat in the header, also reduces the radiant heat in the engine bay. There are no header manufacturers that I know of who will warranty their headers if header wrap has been installed on their products. This includes partial installations of the header tape on certain tubes or sections. In most cases, the header wrap damages the headers beyond repair. (I will explain below) If you run a lean mixture, you "may" see a slim performance gain using header wraps. A rich mixture may show slim to absolutely NO gain in performance. If replacing your headers and header gaskets regularly does not bother your wallet or your time, and you like that ugly look of a wrapped header, go ahead and use the heat wrap. So put the stock exhaust manifold on that car and drive it like a small economy car that it is. It's not a Porsche, Lambo or Ferrari. But I do appreciate the time you took to make this video. Good stuff man.

Those guns work on reading the reflective light back from a laser (not the red indicator light). The figure changes because ur “laser” is being absorbed and thereby effecting the results.
@FlyingOiver
@FlyingOiver 5 лет назад
That is definitely false. They just measure the amount of infrared energy being emitted and then can calculate temperature. The red laser is for them to look cool (and help you aim).
@joefussy11
@joefussy11 5 лет назад
Yeah not the red light. Its the infered light. Its outside of the spectrum we can see. But it still reads reflected/absorbed light to calculate the temperature.

Dude. I don’t need a temp reader. I can run my car hard for 3 hrs on my wrapped header. (Not headerS) ... and I can rest my hand on them. Now Do that on a stock heat shield.. or no wrap header. Have 911 on speed dial

@greengodaytona9373 3 года назад
Lol.. Steel that the headers are made out of cools down much more rapidly than cast iron.. Once the engine is switched off.. However.. What this test is showing us is the impact all other electrical and other components have when the motor is running.. And the amount of heat those are exposed to when you are using headers is 4 times more than what comes out of factory.. Speaks volumes to how good engineering goes into OEM parts.. For not failing when put under this immense kind of abuse..

To keep the heat inside the Headers
@vulturex3265
@vulturex3265 5 лет назад
totally opposite - meant to keep the exhaust gases hotter to increase exhaust flow and cylinder scavenging . Radiant temperatures will be higher in the engine compartment when used, lot more compartment cooling needed to be beneficial. Ceramic coatings are way better. Turbo units love wraps because heat spools up the power. If your not using a turbo then wraps are a waste of money. If your tracking then air is helping but if your in stop and go traffic wraps are really going kill your IATs/timing. Plus wraps shorten the header life - rain water/road salt/dirt. Um if you meant cool to the touch than yea your right.
@louisnguyen2865
@louisnguyen2865 5 лет назад
@@vulturex3265 Thanks for the info but I have a question... how would wraps kill the IAT? Don't wraps hold the heat inside the header and prevent heat inside the bay, which should help cool the space around the intake? I don't get it. Also, one more please... my header is sitting very close to my radiator fan as well as the belts of the engine. Should I wrap that part of the header to lessen the heat around that area? Thanks for any help.
