How sᴍᴀʟʟ Scenes Shock MORE
The movie Dune has this big evil villain who at some point in the movie, spoiler warning, kills an entire family in this shocking scene, but what if I were to tell you that the movie INSIDE OUT 2, a movie about living emotions inside of a teenage girl, had a scene which had me more shocked.
This has to do with how we as humans struggle to imagine, and some media use this in incredibly interesting ways, like Deltarune and Snowgrave.

Hello, i slightly messed up with spoilers and there is a tiny spoiler for in stars and time from 13:37 - 13:48, nothing major and it wont ruin a blind playthrough but still sorry for not putting a warning there!

The other thing that sets Deltarune’s weird route so far apart from Undertale’s genocide is the use of contrast. In Undertale, everyone’s just a monster. Here a monster, there a monster, everywhere a monster. But in Deltarune, it’s even less than that. They’re just darkners. They’re just inanimate objects that take new form in the shadow, they don’t really matter. But Berdly? Berdly isn’t just another one of the characters in your way. He isn’t just one of the enemies, or an object, or something that can be easily discarded or even fixed when you break it. Berdly is a real living person (well, within the context of the story, obviously), and whether you like it or not, he’s dead.
@Shilsey
@Shilsey 13 дней назад
yesss, i somewhat tried to point this out but also it wasnt the focus of this video, but this is something ive seen so little people talk about and it really feels like the climax of this route being that you actually kill a living person instead of just darkners :D

I remember having this realization for the first time after playing Undertale. The game beats you over the head in so many fun and creative ways with how evil Flowey is- eg. him killing you repeatedly and confessing to killing hundreds more people in the past for shits and giggles- but the negative impression this left was about seven trillion times weaker than the flood of sympathy that hit while watching him break down in the true ending. It's simply impossible to give a shit about secondhand accounts of mass time-travel murder in the face of one real, actual crying goat immediately in front of your face.
@Shilsey
@Shilsey 12 дней назад
Undertale has something for everything man haha, first time I realized this was actually with the snowgrave route compared to genocide, but researching for this video made me realize its literally everywhere, although I hadn't considered this example haha, the power of crying goats is just too strong.

Oh the genocide route absolutely feels horrible and I only ever watched a playthrough of it. When you start clearing out areas from monsters every fun aspect of the game is basically removed, it's not fun to play anymore it becomes almost a chore; even if it's just a game, you start wondering what is there to gain from the distruction of everyone other than a perverse desire to see what would happen and it's definetely a pretty horrifying feeling that some part of you wanted to witness that, even if it's just prentended

little analysis videos like these are the reason I fell in love with this channel. also, this reminds me of this one episode in we bare bears. in it, grizzly is in love with this burrito. he gets too attached to it, so ice bear and panda destroy the burrito. grizzly lets it go, and we learn why he was so obsessed with it. he was stuck in a tree as a baby, so a fireman extended his arm so he could cling on to it. the fireman's sleeve jacket resembles a burrito wrapper, hence why he was so obsessed. when I saw that for the first time, I cried. glad I could share.

Oneshot is another great example of this! In the game, you're given ample time to connect with each of the characters in the world Niko is thrown into. You are also given a lot more time with Niko. (MAJOR spoilers in the expanded comment) | V Having to choose between Niko's prior life and the lives of an entire world with many whom you've come to appreciate is heartbreaking. I truly don't know if I made the "right" choice.

I haven't played that star game nor seen your other vid. But it's not fully blamable that you can't prevent protag from choosing the sympathy route---because it's only after they tried every other thing. One might say that it's outta their wits' end to solve the problem rather than genuine empathy. They thought, "well we haven't tried talk no jutsu yet, might as well"

One of the most shocking scenes I've ever witnessed wasn't from any of the games or movies you mentioned, but an Undertale fangame called TS!Underswap. It's Genocide (or in this case, Ruthless) route to be exact. Spoilers ahead for a game you should definitely play if you like Deltarune. For the majority of the game, killing is handled in the same way as Undertale. You grind out encounters, beat scripted, unavoidable boss fights, and spam the fight button until the monsters turn to dust. You've been desensitized to using the fight button, and the monster's deaths are unrealistic, ergo you are mostly unaffected and it's difficult to comprehend the gravity of your actions. You can even justify yourself by saying that you're just doing everything in "self defense". The monsters are attacking you, after all. That is, until towards the end of the game. Enter Harry and Larry, two lovable, cartoonish and completely incompetent henchmen for an even more incompetent boss. When they realize who you are and what you're doing, they react how any normal person would: fear for their lives. They run away from you, but unlike any other boss in the game, they go onto a COMPLETELY OPTIONAL side path. Nobody is forcing you to follow them, even Flowey (who's just kind of an observer in this game) points out that you could easily progress and move on with the game. The only catch? It would abort the Ruthless route. So whether it be for completion or curiosity, you chase them all the way up to a cliffside, blocking the only escape route. They have flying hats, but they ran out of fuel. They could call their boss, but they don't have their phones. Throughout this dialogue sequence as they realize there's no escape, you are given three total opportunities to back off. But if you click this game's equivalent of "Proceed" each time, they are forced to fight you. For the entire battle, they are sparable. You have every opportunity to leave them alone, but if you don't, every time you try to kill one of them, the other one heals them with snacks. The battle seems impossible, right? That is, until you get Larry down to low HP. His sprite starts shaking, and the flavor text just says: "Larry is wobbling. Maybe..." If you then check the Act menu, there's only two options. Check, and... Push. If you select this option, Larry goes off balance, then falls off the cliff with a haunting scream. You see Harry try to save him, but he's too late. He just falls to his knees afterwards, wordlessly staring into the abyss below. This is the one point in the fight where you can't back out anymore, he doesn't even want you to spare him. Without his best friend, his life is meaningless. If you attack him at all, he dies instantly. Needless to say this shook me to my core. A combination of how endearing the characters are, the fact you had to CHASE THEM DOWN and refuse 5 total opportunities to spare their lives, and how instead of the typical turning to dust violence, you are forced to not only use an act which makes the kill feel much more personal, you have to see Larry die a realistic, human death and see how Harry reacts to it. It feels so real and down to earth that you can't help but feel like you actually killed someone. Needless to say, I aborted the route immediately afterward and played Pacifist to wash the taste out of my mouth.

I don't think the parts about Up support your video's thesis all that well. If your thesis was about how a human scale disaster is more moving then a save-the-world plot then the points you bring up would better support it. But I think you wanted the video to be about how violence perpetrated at characters you know it's more moving than violence perpetrated at nameless background characters? Both are good ideas, but I think the up parts could have been left on the editing room floor or for another video. Pretty good video otherwise though!
