Children subjected to bullying often carry lifelong scars. Many go on to suffer from mental illness, and some are even driven to contemplate suicide. In Spain, the tragic case of Kira López has triggered a nationwide debate on bullying.
At the age of 15, Kira López took her own life. Her parents say bullying at school drove her to her death. They accuse the school of failing to take action to stop the bullying and have filed a lawsuit. They want those responsible to be held to account and hope to spare other children the bullying that their daughter went through. Brian Giner also knows what it means to have everyday school life turned into a nightmare. He was bullied for twelve years because he had crossed eyes.
He changed schools repeatedly, mostly blaming himself for what was happening: "For a long time, I thought bullying was normal. If you experience it for long enough, you start to believe everything they say about you. It took me a long time, for example, to be able to look my partner in the eye. Then there was the terrible fear of facing a group. The fear of giving a presentation, and appearing in front of lots of people. I panicked at the thought that someone might make eye contact with me.”
He’s written a book describing his ordeal. His aim in particular is to encourage others affected by bullying. He regularly visits schools and gives lectures and workshops aimed at preventing bullying. Together with Kira's father José Manuel, he’s campaigning for a nationwide anti-bullying law.
Their goal is to raise awareness of the problem and bring about lasting change. They’re calling for clear, nationwide rules for dealing with bullies and documentation of each case, applicable to every school and in every part of Spain. Only then, says Kira’s father, will he be able to find some peace.

Most schools don't care AT ALL. And the parents of the bullies don't care either. Only those we go through it know how much it ends up shapping your own self-esteem and communication skills.

I have been bullied at school, college and at work. I am a magnet for bullies. I don't know why. I got into depression and self-harm due to bullying which led to losing job and into disability. It is a global problem. It needs laws passed and awareness raised. Otherwise many more children will die. We have to teach children and adults to respect the humanity of each other. Otherwise we as a society have failed.

Yeah the typical answer to the larger problem. As someone who was "systematically" bullied since elementary school in the US and these "proposed" solutions are temporary and only work if the conditions are right from therapist to the community or family unit. That is if these resources are available this another key problem. Bullying kills period and kids with disabilities in most cases the main targets. Some of the stuff I have seen I can never unsee. Education to change stigma and perceptions, access to resources, and support mechanisms for kids or families are the answer. @@hfredydl

I was a polite, quiet kid, always looking to do the right thing. I never hurt a goddamn fly in my life, so why did a small child deserve that hell I went through? I had it at home, I had it at school. Almost my entire 66 years have been spent alone. I do not trust friendships. If anyone wants to be near me, there must be something wrong with them. I have battled to have even a small amount of success at anything in life. I do not trust praise, I don't take compliments, I don't even allow anyone to take my picture. It has been a lifetime of shame for no reason. Again, what did I, as a little child, do to earn the life I was given? I don't forgive any of them - the then-children or the adults. When my 12 year old daughter was 9 she started cutting her arms because of bullying at school. She didn’t tell me for a while and then when a friend of hers told me about the cutting I immediately contacted the school and surprisingly they were very quick to put an end to it. They had a huge gymnasium full of elementary students for a day long seminar about bullying. I was surprised just how pro active in this Midwestern American elementary school they actually were. My daughter has always been a little different starting from age 8 but didn’t deserve that. To this day she still wears a sleeve thing on her left arm to cover the scarring. In the past I thought it was something she wore in her “emo” phase sort of like an accessory. We’ve since moved schools and are lucky it hasn’t happened again. That full year of bullying still affects her today she has horrible group anxiety and doesn’t like to leave the house much or go over to friends or have friends over the way she used to. Some days I wonder if she will ever have that excitement in her eyes and how she was so outgoing as a younger child. It’s like all the anxiety of those bullies just sucked the life out of her and some days it seems like she’s just sort of surviving. Anyway just my thoughts.

My wife told them it wasn't enough and insisted on a meeting with the boy's parents. realizing we weren't going to let the issue go, the school set up the said meeting but also made the boy write an essay about what he did and how wrong it was. Aftewards there was no more issue. I think our case was handled differently because my daughter goes to a private school. I have no idea how it would have gone in a public school.

That's why many Americans have opted homeschooling their children. It's very sad. Many school amenities in the US are on par with other advanced countries. But severe bullying and active shooting ruin good education for many students. People in other countries spend a lot of money sending their children to American international school because they find it more hands-on and fun than other schools. The education system is American, but the culture is not American. It's cross-cultural of diverse students and teachers' cultures. So it's different from schools in the US in terms of cultural context. I wonder why is school bullying so severe in the US? I'm aware that American media contributed to the bullying culture. Good for Brian. It's impressive that he took a painful experience made it a strength through self awareness and courage, then reached out to help others. He's a great role model for younger kids and their parents. I bet the people who previously bullied him will feel as small and pathetic as a roach when they see him on this show. Hopefully they have developed emotional maturity will raise their kids to be better people than the cowardly weaklings that they were.

Unfortunately our society is the animal kingdom at its core and the only thing that is stopping people from acting out their animalistic instincts are laws & punishment for breaking them and religion. Those 2 aspects don't work in school. Some parents are human waste, such as criminals, alcoholics, overall pieces of shit and they bring up children into animals without any morals, principles or fear. So trash shit parents create trash shit kids and unfortunately both such parents and kids only understand one emotion that is fear. The only way they will stop bullying you or somebody else if their animalistic instict of fear takes over. And that is possible only through either violence or other threat to their well being. Also it's absolutely disgusting to see teachers close eyes on bullying or even foster it. They deserve a beating and being fired on the spot. Some people never get to see it, but all humans are animals and we live in cold ruthless world, where if you don't defend your interests you will be stomped on. Though I wonder how parents of Kira didn't react to situation when somebody cut her hair off in school. If I was the parent, I'd be in that school tomorrow asking for a director to be fired on the stop and then telling kids whoever did it, that if they try to do it, I'd murder them with my own hands.

You should come to Romania and make a documentary about bullying here. It is just as bad or worse. I have seen everything: physical & emotional abuse, violent fighting in the halls, getting hit, punched, kicked, pushed down the stairs, getting surrounded by a group and beaten and many many horrible things. Also the school's cameras do not work at all, the bullies will always get away and not get kicked out no matter what crime, violence or trauma have caused. The teachers can also be just as bad, abusive and traumatising. Everyone smokes in the bathrooms, there's 0 hygiene and the schools or the education system does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to change these things. The food that they gave was also really bad. They gave spoiled milk and croissants hard and dry as rocks that you can barely chew. Of course it wasn't eaten, everyone just used the croissants and milk jugs as toys to throw at each other. Food fight happened every single day.

I agree. The most bullied are the ones who are a bit different as well, like a bit overweight, or wear glasses, or are shy / and don't wanna join them smoking, skipping classes, and bullying others. It's a mentality that starts at home, many times their parents raised them spoiled, or didn't recognise that it's not ok to treat other kids bad. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That's why, as adults, they go to others countries and embarrass us because they don't want to act civilised and respectful of others. Because they don't learn respect.

From my experience, even if teachers say something and tell the bullies off, that either makes it worse because the bullies get angrier for being in trouble or the teachers are not taken seriously. Bullying should have actual legal consequences, with school suspensions and making the parents of the bullies pay up. The only thing you ever see is that a bullied kid has to leave the school, when it should be the bullies forced out. There should be life-long consequences for the bullies, instead it's the bullied kids who suffer for the rest of their lives with the trauma. School's have no power to do anything legally - the states have to change the laws and make bullying illegal, otherwise nothing will ever change.

A similar process occurs in custodial workplaces, not only schools but also among police, army, security hospitals etc. Any thing that "rocks the boat" or causes extra work is avoided and the blame is put on the victim rather than the bullies. Research into this disturbing aspect of human nature is only in its infancy. Private corporations have found that bullying costs money and loses many valuable employees to competitors costing them credibility in the long run. Much work needs to be done to avoid power imbalances in any place where people congregate, especially in schools where attendance is mandated by law and people from many different backgrounds meet. The trouble is that other imperatives for government action are put ahead of child welfare because children do not have a vote. Children unlucky enough to have non-supporting parents, lacking power or money or ability to support their children, are pretty much left on their own in an unkind world.

Lets say that there is stricter monitoring in classrooms and all across the school and those caught bullying will have to meet their victims later in life who get a psychological evaluation and if it's determined that the effects still exist then the bully should have to pay lifetime compensation each month.

I will NEVER understand the logic behind most school's reaction to bullying. -You have a pacific kid trying to live a totally normal life. -Then you have a bully whose only purpose is to make the pacific kid's life worse. -When the bully harasses the pacific kid, nothing happens. No one does anything. -BUT if the pacific kid "dares" to fight back, then he/she's the one making trouble and gets punished. -We end up with a bully whose ego will just keep getting bigger while the pacific kid is suffering punishment from both the bully and the autority. THIS MAKES NO FCKN SENSE

On Jordi's answer to the question, "Who needs the most self respect?", Jordi is of course right. I thought that too, as a kid. But as I grow older, I realized the oppressors also lack self-esteem or self -respect. Otherwise why do they get such entertainment from harassing and hurting other people? It serves to falsely 'boost' the bully's tiny self-respect. And, how much self respect can you have as a kid? Being bullied everyday slowly chips away at your self-respect unless one is a prodigiously resilient child, which is rare. I may be wrong, I didn't study psychology. I wanted to hear more about self-respect in the issue of bullying. This documentary shows very brave and empathetic people who use their pain to bring a positive change in the world. Thanks DW.

It's a very complicated task, many parents are pretty sure that "they know their kids" but one day they realize that they didn't, and usually, it's the day when it's too late, unfortunately. The teachers took the easy way out by letting me take recess in the safety of an administrator’s office. But never did they want to tackle the bullies. Never did they want to punish them. It took decades to become a relatively confident person (outwardly), but I became a loner and don't trust anyone. I remember my teacher saying to me not to cry in front of others and to get tougher. The thing is, there are bullies among adults too. The only way is to teach the bullied kids confidence and that bullying is less about the victim and more about the bully's insecurities (not that this is any consolation to victims). F.Y.I. Bullying continues way after school ends, It gets worst once you get to the work place and far more sophisticated with consequences and implications far, far, worst. This is specially true if you are a high achiever. Don't you dare to think HR gives a rat ass about you situation, unless of course you are some kind of minority or weirdo identifying with something else.

You complain about bullying yet you're demeaning and bullying others with your words. If you believe that "weirdos" exist, how can you complain if someone thinks you're a weirdo too? There's another homophobe in these comments with a hateful profile name, yet he's also crying about bullying! This is something else. Can't @DWDocumentary do something about this? How could you allow these haters and bullies to comment on a video about bullying?

A school where I’m from, was closed down after the death of a female student. The Ministry of Education was also fined almost 8 million euros, and the school, even though it was closed down completely and indefinitely. Due to it being a private school, the school owner, and his wife, who was the principal at the time, were fined almost 2 million euros for negligence. The school was in operation for almost 30 years. But that one tragic incident, has rendered it an empty building ever since, for the past 9 years, if not a decade by now, I believe. I firmly agree with their plights. Only when government intervention of the highest order is involved, and the legislation of laws to counter this epidemic are passed. Only then, do things truly change.

Oh, and the three buildings in the former grounds of the school, still stand, including the school sign. Why? Because society has punished everything it has stood for, by not buying it in any way, shape, or form. They’ve had multiple auctions, with the price going way below market price, by at least 80% if not more, and they still can’t sell their assets nor the piece of land it stands on, and mind you, this is prime real estate, in midtown of a capital city, worth tens of millions.

That is the way bullies are. I'm elderly and my next door neighbor keeps saying he is going to beat the you know what out of me. And it's a made up reason saying I said something about his friend that I never said. I imagine sooner or later I'm going to get assaulted by him. It made my happy home a nightmare 😢

When I was in high school back in the 1990's there was this big kid who bullied other kids. I was a prime target because I was small and thin with thick glasses. A typical nerd kid new in school. They decided to bully me by putting my head in the urinal. I went home crying and wet. I told my father about it and he was calm and collected. He told me not to worry and that not to complain instead find out where the leader of the bullies lived. The moment I found out where he lived I immediately told my father. That night my father woke me up at around 11pm. He had prepared his M16 rifle and 2 grenades. He told me to go with him. We went to about a 1 kilometre from the house of the bully and walk. When we were near the house of the bully he open fire at the upper wall and roof of the house. He emptied 2 magazines and threw a grenade at their front lawn. The next day the bully kid was silent and meek like he could not hurt an insect. That is the reason why I love my late father so much because he was not a show-off and did not talk a lot but once you cross the line he did things you wish you did not do to him or his love ones. Love you dad!

The idea of fighting back is a very good one, actually. I kind of agree with that guy's director. The problem is that only a small fraction of bullied people could win a fight against one or more bullies. But that's what I think is the best response. If someone or some group of people mock you to the point of you feeling worthless, wait for the interval, lunch or whatever, and sucker punch your bully. Make sure everybody is watching. That will stop bullying. EDIT: I got an even better idea. The anti-bullying brigade. Let's unite the bullied with sympathizers to provide security to everyone. They meet 3 days a week after jiu-jitsu classes to discuss counter-bullying operations.

@@qedro Resentment will only escalate and you could end up killing yourself or executing a senseless mass shooting later on. I'm providing a relatively clean solution. If you can, embarrass your bully with force if necessary. Just make sure he looks like a loser for once and he will likely quit bullying.

That instructor's suggestion resonates with me as well. Not exactly fight back with fists, sometimes with words sometimes with delayed revenge. After all, bullying is not some specialty among children, but a pervasive phenomenon among human society. We must learn to fight back from childhood.

@@Kalimdor199Menegrothyou go until the final consequences, you can’t let no one push you around. Simple as that. “Bullying” isn’t new, but back then we managed things.
