After Mark got his new Bumot panniers for his BMW 1200 GSA, we had a look at the differences between them and the BMW/Touratech panniers.

Love my Bumot panniers. Excellent quality. Bulletproof construction.

they are without doubt some of the best panniers you can get...

Nice comparison. The fact that the Bumot side panniers open 'outwards' seem to make them a little awkward to access when compared to the BMW ones where the lid can be opened forward, or backward to suit your requirement (e.g. on a tightly packed ferry where space to either side can be extremely limited). Also, I feel that it is very beneficial to have lockable panniers, meaning lockable to the frame but also lockable lids, and that all these locks are operated with your bike key, so no extra keys to keep track of, or possibly loose. The Bumot seems to win on size but the luggage frame on the bike has a weight limit (I think 10 kg per box) so maybe your run out of weight before you run out of space? I have done several 2 week + tours abroad with the BMW panniers and never found myself short of space, within reason of course, and even in plenty of rain I have never had any water enter my panniers. That said you do have to inspect the seal around the lip of the panniers ever so often, and of course a damaged/bent/knocked about pannier will not promote a tight seal. At the end of the day I think it would come down to price if I had to buy new panniers but with the mentioned benefits (to me) from the BMW panniers, I would probably prefer to get them again even if they may not look as smart as the Bumot ones.

Thanks for the kind words matey. They are fab boxes indeed, but not infallible like anything I guess. The lids are much firmer eliminating a fight with the wind (which we have had several times), a little stronger as the BMW ones bend out of shape easily (a client ran into the back of Toby's and bent them with very little force), but as you say there may be a trade-off, but so far so good. Other tour guides have them and have had no issues with weight, and that got me thinking, that I haven't ever worried about weight to be honest....eeek!! and have never run out of space on either boxes and also never had any water get into them. Definitely down to price as this is a major consideration, although the Bumot are cheaper. Oh and personal preference.... We will see how we get on with them. Ride safe buddy :)

nowadays, I have heard a lot of people from hard panniers going to soft luggage due to too high danger regarding damages done to legs (fracture) after a fall. Especially off road, due to the square shape of the majority of the boxes, they hit your leg when you put a foot down and also because hard panniers are harder to fix when they are ripped out. Then, I thought it depends on the trip you're planning, road trip you can go with hard ones, off road=soft panniers; BUT then I talked with travelers who traveled a lot with hard panniers who now only travel with soft ones. At the end, it is all about personal choice. Personnally, I have a hard top case from GIVI, Trekker 52L model, very good, always surprised with all the stuff I can put inside. And I guess I may go for soft ones for saddle bags because, personally, I think they are more versatile and not that heavy.

Very true matey. It comes down to personal choice indeed. For us, as nearly all of our riding is done on road (for the moment - watch this space as OffRoad is just incredible), and the hard cases all the way for us. Mainly down to having to have a good amount of storage but also having the peace of mind when leaving the bike in public places with all our kit inside. definitely as you say, personal choice and depends on the use and trip... Ride safe buddy :)

Always good to have product comparison. You don't mention how each respective pannier is locked for security?
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 6 лет назад
hey Rich, thanks for the comment, each box is locked indpendantly as shown on the video, same as the BMW paniers although the Bumot has 2 locks on them :)

Hi! Thanks for the video. Top content! I see Bumot has several capacities for the panniers. Which are the capacities of the ones you're showing? Thanks in advance!

Seems to me the bmw boxes are easier to access from the side. That’s probably why the chose to open them in the way they do. Top box: hopefully the nuts inside don’t vibrate loose.
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 6 лет назад
that is true, although the lids are much better with the resistance as saves fighting the wind etc... hahha... we thought the same about the bolts in the top box... we will see but they do seem very tight :)

Well they seem really nice and solid, beautifully made! 😉 I love that they stay in position without the little cable.

I can barely be arsed with opening and locking one latch, having two is a no no. Every ride out I put stuff in the box lock it then remember I forgot to put something else in and have to open and close again. Those Bumot would end up on eBay in no time. And seeing that most GS riders are over 80 then forgetting stuff is a regular occurrence.

Which top case would a passenger prefer? A padded backrest can be added to the BMW case, what about Bumot?
@RiderCamTV
@RiderCamTV 6 лет назад
either really, although the Bumot is higher so will offer more of a back rest to a pillion

I wanted to buy the bags, the pannier racks and the box (later also the trio of rigid suitcases) for the africa twin 1100 adventure sports 2021 but despite the emails sent I did not understand the difference between the two shades of gray because they replied to consult the site . I think for them to sell or not to sell is the same thing. Too bad because I wanted to buy their products but I will have to look elsewhere. P.S. For example, they could propose to send me pieces of waste from the processing to see the colors well (I would obviously have paid to have the pieces of waste)

As they are made in Bulgaria I think there is/was an issue about exporting them. In the UK their distributors are The Adventure Bike Shop. Ride safe.
