Dead on about the killer instinct taking the longest to come back, I had a gnarly crash that took me a few months to regain my fitness from, but every race after that I was spooked by the slightest possibility of a crash. Never got back my head back into it and just switched to cyclocross, enjoying things a lot more.

I do some on mountain bikes. One crash and the rest of the day I take it slow and don't carry speed like I should and make even more mistakes and bad lines because I'm not aggressive. I used to do road; no crashes but I never liked high speed pace lines like that with no protection.

It would be great to see the sport have a greater focus on rider safety, from the beginning level all the way to the top. You almost get the feeling that the riders are just there as cogs in a machine to garner recognition and wealth for sponsors and promoters. I've even seen an ad promoting an event that highlighted the danger to the participants (which I presume was an attempt to attract those who like to watch the spectacle of crashes).

Hey, Jeff great videos. Can you help me out? I'm trying to improve my sprint. What is a good speed to reach when training by myself, in the big gear? I know how relative power is, but speed is what wins bike races. You have to be going faster than everyone else at the end, not making more power.

The only time I ever crashed was going around 20mph and flipping over the handlebars after someone swiped my front tire. Didn't get hurt but had to replace my front wheel. Was back on my bike 3 days later after getting a new wheel. But that was in my later 20s. If that happened now in my 40s I would be on the couch for a month crying like a little girl. I can't imagine going 40mph and being that close to all those people.

Jeff you talk about those two riders at the end running up the curb and risking it all for a couple of hundred bucks but watch for another couple of seconds then and watch your wheels as you followed them and did it yourself so maybe realize you are taking those same risks.

@@philippesimons7897 it's a beginners category (we don't have cat 1-5 in our country) so it is expected that its kinda messy on corners and will slow down alot, so I think a lighter bike will be kinda beneficial to accelerate faster every corner. also it's an MTB crit race ( ya I know it's weird ) so removing that left shifter will also make my bike more aero.
