does not make sense: the first step in kata is step forward and then - one more step forward with a punch, but in bunkai demo the step back is done. does that mean bunkai demo is not actually correct?
This is cool but I don't think it's valid for this kata. Right from the first move, the sequence of blocking the kick and then countering with a punch only works because the footwork was changed to a retreat instead of an advance. If you had an incoming kick from the left side and stepped toward it, as in the first move of the kata, you would get hit, and even if you deflected the kick, you would be well within punching range without needing to step.
There are three levels of bunkai: omote bunkai (for example, the block), ura bunkai (the hammer fist), and honto bunkai (a self-defense technique). See Jesse Enkamp's video 3 Levels of Karate Bunkai (Omote, Ura, Honto). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-q9kS4nOXPCI.html
I have a question. Why do you do a gedan barai if the opponent's leg does not even reach you? Example at 2.11. By hitting your opponent's leg with your arm, you are hurting yourself unnecessarily when bone meets bone. Correct me if I am wrong.
Yang chensun this is JKA “tell you nothing” level bunkai. In what self defense scenario is your attacker going to come at you from 8ft away with an Oi-zuki?
Super late reply I know. I agree "honest attacks" should always be done. If i don't block you should land your kick otherwise we are poorly training. Gedan barai is done on linear attacks. Linear attacks have great strength forward but no support on the sides, so doing gedan barai deflects them easily even without power, same goes for straight punches. For circular kicks though, you wouldn't use gedan barai block in the opposite direction. Your forearm vs a leg is not gonna go well
That should be a technical application for a basic kata? As long i turn by dojo of martials arts, i realize there are a lot of peoples who don't have any knowledge about real meaning of this discipline. Every action of a kata as been conceived to teach something of particolar that sure are not a banal application like this. Cos every single movement has been conceived for a specific reason, a bunkai like thatis just a losing of time, without a real study by performers. Otherwise they would know importance of every single position every single walking and especially, technic's loading has his application
This is the first kata and the application should be something that a total beginner can understand. It is exactly what I thought to teach to the children in my dojo at the first year so that they can understand what a kata is. This will help them with the body stability and also in memorizing the sequence. Moreover, as I don’t speak the same language of my students, this material is exactly what I need to show them a possible path.
