Bunker hunting in the Hürtgen forest and my touring COSTS! MT10 trip ep 3.

We round up our 5-day trip to Europe by leaving Germany for Belgium, stopping on the way for a quick look around the Hürtgenwald - home to the longest battle ever fought by the US army. Join me as I search for bunkers and try to get a taste of what happened there. Then it's out into Belgium, the rain and on to how much the entire trip cost me.

Glad to hear that you don´t care too much about the views on this series. Of course it would be nicer if they were big hits, but I personally enjoyed the videos. So I hope you will do something like this again. Gives me some ideas where to go on some of my next trips.

Another brilliant video! And what a fantastic weather to ride. Thanks. Keep them coming Tim. How do you find travelling with R30 on your shoulders? I’m off to Belgium and France for a weekend in a month on my S1000R and trying to get my luggage options right. So far I’ve crossed off tank bag (to much faff to install and for so little gain) panniers didn’t make the list either (too restrictive with filtering and not cost effective as I don’t tour frequently enough) using pillion seat for storage is a joke (tiny seat and anything on it would stop me from getting my leg over properly) I think I might have answered my own question here 😂 Looks like rucksack is what I’m left with.

Just goes to show, I find these videos your most interesting! At the beginning of June I spent 10 days (7 days riding - went by boat 🥱zzzz) to the Picos and Pyrenees. As you say, I came back even more impressed with my CB750 Hornet (it's not a Hornet).

Great video, great series Tim!! :) Imagine my surprise to get back from touring this very morning from 9 days in Germany (8 days riding, 2300 miles), on my MT10 to find these videos waiting for me (seeing as I went to (out via the chunnel), The Eifel (Nürburgring), Kauserslauten forest, The Black Forest, Stuttgart, Nürnberg, Czech Republic, Thüringiawald, Harz mountains, Möhnesee, Edesee and then home (via the hook ferry) ;) :) (I hooked up with Shaun and his German mates for a weekend thing too (and Mike & Rachel came, so there were 3x MT10s!! ;) :D :D ). I completely agree that when you do some big miles on the MT10, apart from fuel costs (I got an average of 38mpg), it's an amazing touring bike that's fun and worthy - "take the bike you want to ride when you get there", as AMC always says! (as long as you have the comfort seat!! ;) ) I've now done 30k mostly touring miles on mine, it's 6 and I'm keeping it forever!!!

@@timrodierides Yes, he should never have gone from a 125 to the Ducati ! Apparently last year he made a habit of tumbling, and on the fateful day this June it was his second time when he broke his leg. All the Gear, no idea ! Nice one Tim, very interesting. Got back yesterday, went to Remagen, we were going anyway :D and Zundstorf in Edersee. This may be an option for next time. The only issue I have with the MT10 as a tourer is the number of visits to the petrol station you have to make. I think in 5 days I counted 18 visits from Pendine in Wales to Edersee in Germany via Maubeuge, Dinant, Malmedy, Remagen etc. The major plus point is when you get to the awesome twisty German, perfect roads it's amazing.

The Americans didn't want to talk about the battle of the Hurtgenwald afterwards because they pretty much adopted a foolish and costly strategy. Some may disagree. However, Ernest Hemingway who was there as a war correspondent and witnessed the slaughter, wrote that it would have saved the American military a lot of time and inconvenience if they just shot their (inexperienced) reinforcements as they got off the trucks.

Absolutely brilliant with history lesson, if I lived that close to the tunnel be over more often . First time I did a euro trip was in a street triple come back next bike must have cruise control.. so bought a super duke with panniers . My best friend is half German keeps telling me the places must visit in Germany . But he doesn’t ride a motorcycle so not a real friend lol . I’ve only been the black first twice so more to see unfortunately not enough time off work this year might be able ti sort something out in September. It’s 275 miles just to get to the euro tunnel for me . The horrible bit round M25 😢

At 18:40 you approached the two railway underpasses at Trois Ponts... it was just next to the entrance to the first underpass that a small group of American engineers from the 51st ECB tired to stop the advance, with an anti-tank gun, of Kampfgruppe Peiper, SS Leibstandarte Division during the early days of the Battle of the Bulge. If you haven't already, check out the book "Kampfgruppe Peiper - The Race for the Meuse" by David Cooke & Wayne Evans. Very detailed and identifies loads of locations were the action took place 🤓😊👍

Yes he did. They were ordered not to talk to German civilians, which he did anyway. Years later we found a letter from a German woman,em. Surprise Stuka attacks and not being able to enter Hamburg because it was rubble. He found himself in charge of some German prisoners. He didn’t speak the language but managed to convey what he wanted by waving a big stick around. Got on quite well with them apparently. He was a very mild mannered man so the thought of the big stick thing was quite funny. Of Belsen he remembers the bodies being bulldozed into a big pit and a Jewish who came up to him with a flower to thank him for her freedom. Chilling stuff.
