Bunkhouse and other outbuildings reveal with special guest appearances. My contractor and his "friend" have made an appearance in this video. Be sure to watch to the very end... Poking some fun at the home flipping TV shows that miss the mark and the snooty homeowners who expect way too.
The bunkhouse serves two purposes: 1) tool shed/shop space and 2) an emergency shelter. Comment below and let me know what you would do to make it livable in case of an emergency.

A basic solar setup for the bunk house would be nice. As well as food, water storage containers,a way to cook,and extra clothes. Basic survival items mostly. As thoughtful as you are I'm sure you are way ahead of the game. Stay safe

Actually I have nothing in that bunkhouse yet. Almost everything in the video was left over by the roofing contractor for the main roofing job coming up. But the bunkhouse does have electricity! I will have a generator in the bunkhouse. If I do solar, I will have to run the panels out away from the bunkhouse. It sits pretty close to the tree line. But basic stuff like food and water for sure! Hope you and your son had a great time on your camping trip! 😁

@@AloneinRemoteAlaska Yes we did have a great time!! Backups for what ever life throws at us is so important especially when remote. It is a place to get out of the elements so that is a big deal. Watching other channels, they will sometimes mount panels on scaffolding type setups to get the solar panels in a better place due to trees. Just a thought. Stay safe.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
I could get the panels to the sun it would just take many feet of cable. Not sure how far its allowed to go though. The trees really block out the sun. Not sure I could get them high enough! And I'm scared of heights 😁

Your previous comment got me searching ways to get solar panels mounted higher. There are some interesting ways people have come up with stuff. They only thing that would stop me from trying some of the stuff is the high winds we get. I was thinking wind turbine then but I hear they make a lot of noise 😁 Research continues! Thank you Ashley!

Lot's of fun projects to be done. Remember that one project at a time is productive. Many going at same time nothing gets done. For the most part anyways lmao. Yeah I'd keep the spare cabin simple. Fix any structural concerns and make sure it's retaining heat well. Put a proper wood stove in there. If you're planning on replacing the one in the house I'd just re purpose that one. Put a small kitchenette together and obviously a bathroom.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska

Once I buy my wood oven, my current wood stove goes into the bunkhouse! Just not sure how I will get that chunk of metal out there! Firm believer in not doing too many projects at a time though. Maybe two tops! The backup cabin will be simple but very useable if needed. It only has to be able to keep me safe for awhile anyway. I'm just lucky to have it! 😁 Thank you Chris!

Yes and unless its military MRE's or food buckets that store for 25 years, any food I put in there will need to be rotated. Water rotated. First aid supplies swapped out, dog food rotated. Have to check to make sure that pesky squirrel hasn't taken up residence in it. It's a lot of work to set up but easy to maintain after. And then pray to never need it! 😁

Love the little cabin. Add more insulation and make sure the windows are sealed good. Add a little butane or propane cook top , lanterns and sealable bins with blankets and extra clothes and dried food in it a dry sink and stack firewood inside. That way if, god forbid, you had a house fire I. The middle of winter the cabin would be livable right away. We have always had a back up plan for our places since we hear and cook with wood. But for long term, I would keep part of it for a work shop, and fix up the rest as a emergency cabin.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
I haven't decided if I want to set it up fully laid out or in bins for when needed. Once I get a pole barn built, I will be able to have a nice workshop in a bigger space and then can lay out the bunkhouse move in ready. It was the original cabin built as the owner built the cabin I am in now. Kind of small for long term but could be "good enough" until the cabin gets rebuilt! It will be stocked in bins one way or another this summer. :-)

@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
What I probably should have mentioned on the chicken coop was the upper half was made of canvas then spray foam. It's kind of a wobbly structure on the top part. But I may leave the bottom part and someone suggested an outdoor cleaning/processing station for game/fish/farm. I'm kind of leaning that direction. I do know what you mean about old structures though. Different style of building back then. Sometimes superior style. 😁 Thank you Colin!

Honestly for the back up cabin... I would change the car windshield for a proper window... It's insulated so I would put plywood sheeting up on the ceiling and walls and then you can just build a small bucket toilet closet in one corner... Bed area... A simple closet... A kitchen area put in a table and chairs then at the front you can use as storage area... Divide it up into four equal area's ( bed, kitchen, storage and poty, and living room areas ) Just a thought... All and all another great video... And funny 😃 Keep them coming!

LOL thank you Charles! Woke up during the night to see how the video was doing.....lost 3 subscribers 🤪How will those people ever find out what happened to Dewey?? But yes I will change out all windows that were previously on vehicles! It's not the first cabin I have seen using a car window. I guess in Alaska you wont ever find your vehicle up on blocks with the wheels stolen, just your windshield missing 🤣 I was thinking of either dividing into 3 or 4 sections (like you suggested) or just keep a path clear from the door to the back of the cabin and still have those areas basically on "one side". But yeah bedroom, kitchen, bathroom!

I think Ashley Anderson said it all, you can also have a windmill on the outside you need wood chopped for about a whole winner actually longer than that you got to use a wood burning stove I think you can have a regular stove also with solar but you need good solar batteries and you need a windmill and case the batteries go down if it's not snowing the windmills can pick it up, I definitely would put shutters over my windows but I would put some on the inside while I'm living there and lock the shutters on in side at night. You can do it, hang in there, You need a hundred gallon water barrel run you some gutters down to where it can run the rain can run into the barrel, you water catch and have extra until it's halfway full, I don't know how much rain Alaska gets. I'm praying for you.I would put sheet rock up on walls in the ceiling it would help with insulation. You need to get the snow off top of cabin, get a snow rake.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
Yes Ashley sounds like a survival pro! I see her commenting on other channels I follow as well. 😉 The bunkhouse has electricity but I will assume that if my cabin burns down that the electricity gets shorted out to the bunkhouse. If I did solar I would need to keep the panels further out since the bunkhouse is so close to the tree line. Wind would work though! I may just have a generator. Shutters on the windows for sure since there is nothing now. And reinforce the door. I will have water in there as well and will need to figure a gutter system since heavy snow tends to rip gutters off. Alaska gets about 31 inches of rain per year. I have a snow rake for the main cabin and will get that snow knocked off the bunkhouse! That was a lot of info there Karen! Thank you so much! 😁

For the back up cabin. Weather seal/caulk the doors and windows and Insulate the walls on the interior, easy and cheap. Put up shelving for emergency food supplies as well as other emergency supplies. If you use the oil tank, route a pipe to the back up cabin, oil is easier to keep burning than wood. Fire starter and back up wood nice and dry in the cabin. Most chickens do not do well below -20F.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
Yes! I definitely need to seal the doors and windows! I never realized how many windows this bunkhouse has! There is shelving in there currently but not nearly strong enough to hold heavy items like cans or ammo boxes. Only have oil next to the cabin but will get some propane as back up. Along with a generator. A full cord of wood will be next to the cabin along with as much kindling and fire starter I can find or make. I will assume that if something does happen to my cabin, it will be middle of winter, during a snow storm and will need to make fire ASAP! I am just thinking of all the projects you have lined up: main cabin work, bunkhouse tune up, wood shed, greenhouse, garden (which will need a good, high, strong fence to keep the moose at bay), get rid of old chicken coup (please use a true respirator, not just a mask, when doing that work!), aside from the fact that I imagine you'll be fishing & hunting & canning. You could convert one of those unused structures (greenhouse or chicken coop) into your long term wood storage. Build one big enough for 2 or 3 cords right next to the house then keep your other 10 or 15 cords in one of those buildings once you have a permanent roof on them.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
I had this thought not too long ago about storing the firewood. I am going to keep a full cord in the artic entry and a couple just outside the door. And I was going to build one main storage for the rest! BUT I started thinking, what happens if that main storage shed ever catches on fire or something? SO I think you are correct. I don't think either one is big enough for that many cords but a better idea is to split them up! Don't put all my eggs in one basket as they say! So many things to ponder 🤔
@aspendell209
@aspendell209 2 года назад
@@AloneinRemoteAlaska If you keep more firewood inside (above freezing) than you can burn in a week, it will become a hideout for mice, bugs and other small critters. It doesn't matter how tight you seal your cabin they will get in. And they are much harder to catch if they have a big wood stack to hide in. But you do want a spot very close to the cabin to store your dryest firewood. So you don't have to clear the fresh snow each time you go out for wood. Then you only have to clear a good trail a couple times a winter, to transport enough from main storage to your shelter next to the house.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
Yes exactly true! The firewood that gets stored farthest from the cabin will most likely just sit there for awhile. I may just build 2 wood sheds closer to the cabin. One for this year and one for seasoning. So just one trail needed. Easier to just swap sheds. But until then I have to work with what I have. I am hoping to get at least one wood shed built this year though either way. And you are soooo right about the mice! There is no way to keep them darn mice out! Sneaky little rodents they are! 😁

create some base rules: should the backup cabin be bear proof, livable in deep winter? From there you can create the conditions you need to keep against the current state of the reserve cabin. If it should be bear proof: what you need to do to be in a situation that the reserve cabin is bear proof and is it possible to get it in that condition....and so one for a base rules :-) You need a project leader :- )

I have to say you are really getting creative in your video productions. I would get something on the ceiling of the bunk house so the vapor barrier doesn’t breath in the wind. You could repurpose some of your logs and build some kind of wood shed.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
Yup I sure will be repurposing the logs. They are actually kind of beautiful. A little touch up and they will be awesome! I will get that roof sealed up just as soon as I can verify that it has air to breath so it wont freeze up! Video's get creative when you don't own a TV or have a cleared driveway to go anywhere! Thank you for noticing Chris! 😁

@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
I like that! Getting strong glass all the way up here would be pricey though! I have seen the glass walls on some of the lodges up here but those are usually the multi million dollar cabins. Glass has to be strong for weather and bears! I have a bathroom that need to be remodeled for no running water. I have a great idea for the kitchen sink I hope I can put together for an upcoming video! Thank you so much! :-)

Alrighty.. emergency taken care of here. For Soler I might offer a suggestion that you look at wind power. Don't know how much wind you get there but here it blows all the time. The solar systems here don't really work from bout October to March for lack of day light.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
I hope all is well! I have been looking into wind power a lot actually. It's definitely always windy. But yeah with how low the sun is and then add trees to that, it's seems like you would be using your generator a lot to charge the batteries.

First about Kenai, that one day you let him out and he crouched and barked then back into the cabin. He can see, hear and smell better than humans. I am thinking that he heard and then maybe smelled an animal that he is afraid of and took off back in the cabin. Wolverines aren't afraid of anything basically and maybe he caught the scent and headed back to the cabin. Even bears don't mess with Wolverines. As for the other questions you asked us for possible reasons, I have no idea 🤔🙂🤗
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska Год назад
I trust Kenai's senses 100% and I watch him every time he goes outside. His nose going 100 MPH or his ears perked up in a certain direction. When he tucked tail and ran inside, I immediately shut the door and had my sidearm ready while I looked around through the windows. After a bit we tried to go outside again and he didn't seemed to be bothered at all. Probably a bear! Wolverines are crazy little creatures! Just a raging ball of razor blades running after you no matter how big you are! Thank you so much Stephen! 🧡🤗💚

@@AloneinRemoteAlaska hahaha I was going to say, that sorta sounds like a law firm tag haha ,...yes thats why I figure that you could use those logs only for something like a wood shed, it'll be all exposed to the elements anyways and let nature clean it off and of course, it would only be sheltering wood so... waste not-want not, as my Mother always use to say lol perhaps I am nuts 🤪 lol just wait till ya hear about the new project suggestion that I have swirling around up here in crazy town! 🍺😆 🦍🦧🐻

I generally get my inspiration from the stuff i have laying around and not going to cost me much. The lumber from the greenhouse might make a unique inner wall. Garage sale finds can sometime be a great inspiration to me as well or even Craigslist free items. I watched the video a couple times and never saw the SASQUATCH. Guess my eyes just aren't what they use to be. Poor Dewey He will be missed.

Crazy foam master, I believe in using foam but in a limited basis, I use mineral wool because of all the great benefits, and if u have to remove it, u pull it off, that foam is going to be terrible to remove, I feel bad for you, probably best to leave it on and whatever comes apart with logs gets tossed, hopefully u can get another trailer to load that stuff up, do u guys have dumps around your area or do they haul everything away ?
@AloneinRemoteAlaska
@AloneinRemoteAlaska 2 года назад
There are dumps (transfer stations) but the one near me is sort of far away still! :-) I am going to see if I can get a roll off dropped off but that wont be cheap. But I think I would only need it one time to get rid of everything including the foam structure. Definitely keeping the logs though. :-)
