Deanston every day of the week. Bought about 6 bottles of Deanston over the years and never a bad batch. Bunna is a different story. 4 bottles bought. 2 were bad batches. Can't justify giving Bunna my custom anymore. Good review mate.

Very yin and yang comparison Alan. Both is the obvious answer for me with a Ledaig 10 in their as well for a trifecta of styles. As good as bunna 12 is I find myself buying it as a blending ingredient these days. Blended 60% bunna 40% Ugidail (or even better independent cs stoichia) gives a wonderful Islay sherry peat bomb that is better than any core range bottle. Cheers Alan

I recently finished bottles of Deanston 12 and Bunnahabhain 18, and I still have a bottle of Deanston 15 organic. I also tried Bunnahabhain 12 from a mini-bottle recently. All of these are good; you can't go wrong with any of them. After I finish the Deanston 15, I'll probably get another from their range, and I'm sure Bunnahabhain will be in my collection again. I'm holding out for a 12-year cask strength, but it isn't readily available. As for which distillery I prefer, I don't have a strong preference - it depends on my mood.

Hello Alan, I really appreciate the comparison of two of my favourite whiskies. Which one to choose? They are both champions in their categories, my choice depends on the moment and my mood (but I must confess a preference for the Bunnahabhain) Here are my tasting notes. Bunnahabhain 12yo (46.3% ABV, Bottle code 2301985 L5 08:25 213009): I will start with the colour: it’s a beautiful and intense dark amber gold. Rich and elegant, the nose immediately recalls notes of sultanas, oak, barrel spices, vanilla, and fresh fruit (orange), with a touch of malt and a subtle saltiness. The smoky and peaty notes are almost imperceptible. The sherry influence is present: raisins, candied fruit and caramel fill the nostrils, reached shortly after by the ocean notes that accompany them gracefully. A soft, caressing, sweet smell, a great balance of sweetness and spice. The mouthfeel is oily, rich, and creamy and benefits from its 46.3% ABV and non-chill filtration. The palate is initially soft with notes of sherry and hazelnut, vanilla, and sultanas, leading to the sweet notes of malt. Then the presence of the ocean becomes more pronounced, dampening the sweetness that turns towards salted butter. I can perceive a light peatiness but in its more vegetal, non-smoky, herbaceous form. Candied fruit and caramel do not overcome the intense sherried notes: the ageing in Sherry casks is there, but well integrated with the bourbon influence. Maybe it will still be too sweet for someone, but I find it a perfect balance, full-bodied and mature. The finish is medium-long, with good persistence and notes of oak, vanilla, spices and sherry with a salty and herbaceous aftertaste. Deanston 12yo (46.3% ABV, Bottle Code L164869 21/182 2021/07/05 08:35): This is one of the most appreciated value-for-money bottles on the market. Crafted by hand following the traditional methods with ingredients sourced from local farms and ageing in ex-Bourbon casks Amber gold colour, on the nose we are welcomed by a slight alcoholic tingle and the intense aromas of wood spices (nutmeg, cinnamon) and vanilla, accompanied by delicious notes of ripe banana, peach, apple, caramel, honey, almond biscuits, leather, hints of citrus zest and barley sugar. Full-bodied on the palate, tasted neat it's a tad fiery; it recovers the spicy notes with a bitter streak that mitigates the sweetness of the woods. Yellow fruits and nuts become more present, accompanied by notes of candied fruit, caramel, vanilla, oak wood and honey, followed by hints of citrus zest and tobacco. Impression of smoke over distance. Medium persistence, spicy with notes of oak, honeyed malt and nuts.
