Seeing the montage of how they slowly grew, it was like watching bread dough rise. The way that they just squished closer together the bigger they got! Such precious little poof balls
Thank you. :) Since the sire (father) is a true dwarf and has one copy of the dwarf gene but the dam (Cora) has no copies, half of the babies should receive the dwarf gene and be true dwarf Hollands and half should be false dwarfs without the dwarf gene. When you breed two true dwarf Hollands, about a quarter would receive two dwarf genes and be peanuts, which cannot survive. That's another reason why I like false dwarf/true dwarf pairings.
Very interesting and informative video. I'm currently trying to breed for opal Dutch and had a Dutch litter of the same colors not too long ago. This completely explains why I got the colors I did. Thanks for making this video.
it amazes me how much you need to know about genetics and biology to be a breeder. I’m glad that you know so much about what you’re doing! There’s so many breeders out their that just breeder whatever with whatever with no regard to genetics and what’s being passed on to the babies
Now this is a rabbit breeder. They definitely know what they are talking about and they have a great understanding of genetics. Bravo! They really remind me of my AFL babies when they hop out of their nest box for the first time. (I mean, no kidding they're a very simmilar breed) Look at those airplane ears! :3
they are so cute!! and you are so special to take care to all of them! here in Italy we don't have anyone to make video like you do, so I am a big fan of you and your bunnies! xxx
Thank you for the genetics lesson and the description of the colouring. I now know that what gives my holland lop his little ring around the nose is the agouti (spelling?) gene. He has all of the characteristics that you described. Those babies are so adorable - I love seeing these updates.
Well, otter colors (black otter, blue otter, chocolate otter, lilac otter) have similar nose/eye rings but also have tan markings. It is complicated. Your bunny likely is an agouti color.
Ive learnt a great deal from your channel, truly informative and adorable bunnies! May I ask, by when and how will you be able to tell which of these kits received the dwarf gene from daddy and which ones didn't?
Some are obvious by 7/8 weeks of age, and others may look ambiguous until they are closer to 6+ months and are either test bred or weigh over 4 pounds (usually 4+ pounds indicates a false dwarf...or a fat true dwarf).
That's amazing that all seven survived when it was her first litter! My girl accidentally got pregnant and gave birth to 8 (She's even a true dwarf) but none of them survived past the week :(. We plan on neutering my boy in a few weeks so it doesn't happen again.
I fell in love with Cora she is so beautiful omg! The babies too! I saw you are litter training them, could you please help me with your opinion? I have 2 bunnies 2 years old the female is spayed the male isn't and he was perfectly litter trained and the female is always urinating everywhere and affected the male, and because of this their fur is dirty because they lay down in their urine, the spayed female is the one who does this a lot and I can't do anything while I am working or sleeping... They can't get a bath because they could die... Although where I live is very hot... Any suggestion for Bugs and Lola? :(
My first question is, are you certain she is spayed? If she was adopted as a "spayed" female, it is possible someone made and error thinking she is spayed. Males being neutered is obvious with the lack of testicles. If she is definitely spayed, I would think maybe she is still reacting to his hormones, so getting him neutered could help. If they do get urine on them, a warm sponge bath with baking soda water or a bottom under a warm trickle of water is OK as opposed to a full bath, which you don't want to do. Just make sure to dry them with towels afterwards and give them a warm place to dry out.
I know this video is quite some time ago but my doe and buck had kids it was her first lottler she had 7 babies also but I didnt know she was pregnant so she was with shax my hollan lop buck and she had a nest I think he messed it up but they were underdeveloped due to stress and also she is a dutch and I didnt know lops were dwarf breed so we did have peanuts now weeks later only 3 survived but on the 3 week they passed away due to genetics we were also bottle feeding since she wasnt being mom. I separated them shortly after but a few weeks later she made a burrow and pulled out her hair I prayed for a phantom but nope she has 4 fat healthy babies and on top of that she is being a mom to she is feeding them and everything cause she had a chance to be a mother this time when last time it was messed up to early. But so far we have maybe two sets of Holland lop ears but all of them are white.
1. Are there good books to buy to learn this and keep on hand that you recommend? 2. We have a mini lop, broken sable, so do holland lop colors genetics apply to mini lops? Thank you so much for all your video helps!
I highly recommend About Bunny Colors by Ellyn Eddy. It contains color genetics that apply to all rabbit breeds (though some color names do vary between breeds).
Wow i woulda had her pegged as a true dwarf because she has tiny ears. Can you please do a video on true/false hollands, please with hollands on top? :) This video really messed up what i thought i knew lmao ps blue is one of my favorite colors too!!
Hook's Hollands - Ohio Holland Lops , I would love to see a video posted of how you keep your bunnies so clean! I have mine in a hutch with a cage floor, and their feet are still always dirty. How can I fix this? Also, 2 of my baby bunnies have fleas, what is the best way to get rid of them? Thank you so much!
Most of the adults rarely have urine accidents, which keep their feet pretty clean. I believe that topical Revolution works well for fleas; I have used it as a mite preventative.
i'm not a breeder but am super interested in learning the genetics of color in bunnies (seems wonderfully complicated and appeals to me more than, say, sudoku or Jeopardy! to keep my middle-aged brain sharp) and wonder if there exists some quintessential bunny genetics book you'd highly recommend? (or web site, but i'm partial to actual books .. #oldschool) - - i'm aware of a publication called 'studies of inheritance' by castle but would so appreciate your recommendation(s).
Thank you for discussing the genetics in this video, you must be an exceptional breeder. How do you determine the genes present in a rabbit? Pedigrees? Appearance? A type of DNA testing, if that exists for rabbits? A combination of those? And thank you for replying to my email!
I start with the pedigree and record the known genetics. As that bunny produces litters, I add in any recessive genes that I determine. The longer I breed the rabbit, the more accurately I can map their genetics. If there was no pedigree, I would go by appearance and then edit as I bred that rabbit.
In pretty sure napkin is a broken tort but I wanted an opal Edit: well maybe napkin is just a tort but the breeder told me he was broken but his tummy isnt really white only in a little patch that's kind of gray
My 2-year-old broken chestnut Holland Lop, Lucy, has Cora’s personality too. She was born 7/21/2017. I will breed her with a new bunny we are getting on Christmas Eve. He is Dylan James, a broken opal, he was born 2/16/2018, seven months younger than Lucy. They are dilute, so should all their babies be dilute? If Dylan is an opal, what are his genetics?
Chestnut is not a dilute color but opal is. Opal is A-B-C-dd-E-, so he could have quite a few recessive genes on all alleles except D. I highly recommend that anyone interested in breeding rabbits read the book About Bunny Colors by Ellyn Eddy prior to breeding as it is a great tool for teaching basic color genetics.
Dilute is recessive. If you create a Punnett square, you will see that half of the babies should be dilute and half non-dilute. This is demonstrated in the book I recommended above...it's a worthwhile read. :)
I try to include important info as text; it just is too time-consuming to type captions for all of the audio (I talk a lot). :) Many of my videos simply include bunnies and music for everyone's viewing pleasure.
@@HooksHollands Yea i just don't wanna keep on telling him what your saying can make so other people can do it for you? Some people on RU-vid let their viewers do it for them
