So, i got the Mininova the other day replacing the old microkorg... after being on a looooong business trip I plugged all my gear up today and this is what happened. No real plan.. just a long weird kind of ambient jam session.. as always everything is live, no multitracking (you know the deal by now).
Gear used, Novation Mininova, Roland TR-8, KORG ms-20 mini, volca bass, keys, elektron analog four, jomox t-resonator, ibanez es2, strymon time line, kaoss pad KP3+.
Zoom Q4 handles the 2-track recording and overhead CAM. No computer was harmed during these sessions :)
I hope you like it, sorry for the 20+ minutes... but i dont know how to stop playing. :)
And yeah... i filmed this one in 1080p... man, it took FOREVER to decode, even though its so much nicer quality.. i think ill stick to 720p for a while :P

Mininova is a crazy powerful synth i can find pretty much any sound i need on it. Just wish it had a sequencer.

thanks a lot mate... yeah, the mininova is a great addition, and a refreshment as i just got bored of the microkorg having had it for such a long time. :) is was a good synth.. but the realtime knobs and buttons for arpeggiator/FX on the mininova was tempting :)

I read online the vocoder of mininova is awesome, and better than the Microkorg's vocoder. I just bought a used MicoroKorg, so happy..... but the mininova is really amazing, great sounds... Have you ever had the Korg Micro X? I think it will be my next purchase

PanzerLyu oh yeah, vocoder is brutal.. much better than the old microkorg. :) The KORG is still a great synth, no doubt.. just different. Also a better more fair comparison in terms of price/perfo would be the XL+ with the mininova rather than the old one.

A beautiful evolution of soundscapes and captivating rhythms. 1080p! I agree about the processing time. I think 720 is nearly twice as fast to work with. I'm finally getting started on a music room where I will be able to leave my gear set up. I can't wait. Love your setup by the way. BTW I thought your video was almost long enough ;)

Hi Olli, great stuff!! Congratulations!! I admire your very own personal music style and character!!! It reminds me on Tangerine Dream in the 70's and early 80's!! Far apart from creating overstyled songs with heavyly overloads computer software so for me it is a great pleasure to listen to your live played electronic music. I ended up making music with Korg M1 and Casio CZ 1000 (and Atari 1024 ST as sequancer) in 1992. At that time I had enough of stubborn sequencer software and computer. Creative development was impossible. But a few month ago, as I found your videos on RU-vid by pure coincidence, I decided to start again making music again after 20 vears: but this time beeing influenced by your music: playing all live, mainly analogue. And so I get now hold of a used Korg R3 and a Korg Kaossilator....it is the beginning and these won't be my last virtual analoge synthesizers!! Thank you very much for inspiration!!!!!

Agreed. Like Rome, studios are not built in a day. It's piece by piece but I feel that is the best way as it gives you time to research and choose the best gear for your budget as well as the best gear to compliment your ideal if intended sound. Olli here has a knack for picking equipment that is very complimentary to one another

5 people don't know that on low cost deckstop pc may run 10 free virtual synth (VST) ,to make music like this :)) Great work Oli ,as usual. For me the greatest works of you ,are when you mix this gears with guitars :) just a particular preference

Camilo Ruiz thanks! on the mininova patch, dont remember if its a tweaked preset or something i made myself. I generally never store and reuse sounds.. i always do them from scratch so its hard to revisit. cheers!

Great job Burg.. I'm really glad people like you are paving the way in the Malaysian scene for electronic music. I used to live in Malaysia a few years ago and never went clubbing much due to the quality of the music.. but man, you are a true synth god! If only you were around when I was living there, I definitely would've went out more! Keep up the good work! The live shit you did with I-Wei was amazing too - I really hope to see more from you both.. Just a quick question here Burg, how do you find the audio recording quality of the Zoom Q4? I am on the verge of buying one myself. Oh, and do you use more than one Zoom Q4 for shots at different angles?

thanks a lot for the kind words, really fun to hear that you like my stuff... appreciated! On the zoom Q4, the audio is excellent... video not so good. I use the Q4 as main audio recorder for basically ALL my tracks today with no computer interaction whatsoever. It is a brilliant piece of hardware..! Its also nice for live audio recording with built in microphones, but i have not really used it properly yet to give a good review, the line in audio however is over the top great.. if your main intention is audio and video is secondary id say its a no brainer. Only one Q4 today, the other angles are mainly Panasonic Lumix cameras... eg the one with good picture quality :) cheers i hope this helps!

Very cool jam, bravo! :D Progressive I'm in need for a master keyboard for my set-up. I was wondering, is the mininova any good as an external master keyboard? I need to drive a Walord Q rack and other expanders. Given the price I might as well buy a little synth instead of just buying a master keyboard. Thanks for your input!

Thanks a lot! :) Well, the mininova does its job in terms of masterkeys, but it being minikeys might be a deal breaker if you are not into those. Else i think its just fine, i mean i have not really used it with other expanders.. midi implementation seems to be standard when playing other synths, so if you need a synth.. which can do MIDI too.. well, this might be a good choice :) cheers

wow that is so good mate iv just bought try Arturia mini brute SE, TR8 and a mininova, looking to have a go and really interested in playing music live I'm thinking of buying the volcas are they recommended by you?

Hiya, thanks mate! The volcas provide a xoxbox style programming / sequencer which means they are very good for live performances.. so should do the trick in most cases. Sonically the discussions seem to differ on forums... but i like them, they have a special sound which i cannot be without atm.. so my volcas will stay (actually only sold the beats, but im buying it back soonish)

for this lead sound in particular? its an extremely simple vanilla sound with triangle on both osc 16' and 4' irc plus LPF only.. and then i open up the filter while playing, plus added resonance later, also tweaked live. The dynamics come from constantly changing the sound while playing, rather than having "one perfect" setting, pro-tip :) cheers

ollilaboratories also iirc... I do believe there might be a slight OSC modulation at a medium rate, just barely noticable when filter is 12 o'clock.. but more apparent when opening up, sort of :)

Really nice :) I want to know how do you use the mininova,are you just using the latch mod ? Because right now i'm using my TB3 as a sequencer to play my mininova, but i want to find another solution ! Thanks and great job again, i love your work.

Tristan Belorgey on this track its just latch / hold... pretty nice to lay down pads. Also at times i use the built in arpeggiator for sequences etc and sync it with MIDI from the TR8. cheers!
