Fish from the sea straight to your table, that freshness is unbeatable. Another great video showcasing the wonders of little NZ, and so jealous of you guys eating your way across Thailand at the moment.
Hope you can get over here one day soon Charlie! Thanks for your kind words- so happy we could show you around our neck of the woods. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
Just found your channel while browsing on RU-vid and love it , since we are traveling to Aotearoa this coming week to visit our daughter and grandson it will help on looking for some of this places to eat while we are there for the next 3 months . Sweet Mother Mary, the ASMR on those pie crusts! I’m salivating. I’m so glad you guys aren’t going to starve in the Northland. Anyone would do quite nicely there it would seem. Loving the series. 🙌😘🙌😘
😂😂😂 definitely not starving that’s for sure Michael! So happy you’re enjoying the series mate- we’re so proud to show off our backyard! Thanks for watching mate. Sending you xoxox Cheers, Sheena 💕
Hi Selwyn, thanks for watching mate! Pretty standard size but man are they taaaaassty! We love them. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed this one. Cheers, Sheena
Go Northland!!! Thanks so much for this particular series guys 💯❤️I'm also new to the region and I can say the fish is amazing and the beef is like stepping in time it's flavour is incredible .good luck to all the wonderful small businesses this silly season 🌺❤️
Woo hoo! Awesome Jared! Hope you’re loving your new home as much as we are. Totally agree on the fish and beef front- we feel so lucky. Thanks for watching this series and hope it gives you some ideas for places to check out 😄 Cheers, Sheena
Stunning...The fish and chips had me lying in bed on a sunday morning wishing it was me sampling such devine food. I saw the pie shop had steak and oyster my favourite of all pies...yum I could enjoy the beaches of Northland come rain or shine. Such memories of my childhood Loving this road trip so much. New Zealanders are so spoilt.
You’d be in Tavita! The steak and oyster pie is delicious 🤤 It’s such a special part of the country- the beaches up here just blow us away- totally unreal. So happy this series is bringing back happy memories. Thanks so much for watching and commenting 😍 Cheers, Sheena
😂😄 glad you have a snack on hand though mate! Thanks for watching and we’re so happy you’re enjoying our content! Hope you like what we have coming up! Cheers, Sheena
Hi guys this has been a fantastic series and can't wait to see the next one. I have never given any thought to Northland as nobody ever talks about it, what an amazing place you have given me a whole other world to come and see and hopefully about March or April 2023, cheers Alister in OZ.
So stoked you’re enjoying it Alister! I think Northland is so underrated- we have the best beaches in the country and to me it feels like another world. So happy we can share it with you in advance of your trip to NZ in case you want to visit! Thanks for watching mate. Cheers, Sheena
I forget how many times I have been to the Monganui fish shop and the pub across the road there. Matai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula is another favourite spot. Northland isn't the most economically buoyant region, but with you guys highlighting all the good food that comes from that region is such a help I'm sure. I have got to try and make a burger pie tomorrow. Thanks for sharing guys. Take care.
😍😍😍 I hope this series has brought back happy memories of your time in Northland! Matai Bay is so beautiful isn’t it?! We love it there too. We’re very proud and thrilled to be able to share our backyard on the channel- we feel Northland gets forgotten about sometimes so hopefully this series inspires more to get up here for a visit! Thanks for watching! Let us know how you get on with that burger pie 😍🤤 Cheers, Sheena
They are so good Angie! Just contemplating popping in tomorrow for a another pizza feast 😆 so glad you enjoyed this one, thanks heaps for watching! Cheers, Sheena
I'm sitting here munching on saltines, trying to absorb all the saliva this video induced. The salt factory was cool to see, but the fish and chips really got me drooling! Then you followed up with those pies, and I was a goner. The crunch of the crust, and the fillings were just too much! Thanks for taking us on this road trip; it's good to visit, even if only virtually.
😂 sorry to make you drool MsKestrela! We’re pretty spoilt- we have some real gems here in the Far North. Thanks for watching and for travelling and eating with us around Northland- we feel so happy we can share it with you! Cheers, Sheena
It was so fascinating Kellie! And literally right around the corner from us with the salt from one of our local beaches. Pretty wild. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
We really are! We have some real winners up here. Craving it all now 😂 thanks for watching JR Fritz, hope you enjoyed this one. Have a great week! Cheers, Sheena
That Cheeseburger pie looks gooood, may have to do on a road trip. Gotta try a 'double cheeseburger' pie from Jesters. Was confused by the texture of two meat patties, but then hit the pickle and haven't looked back. We get the pie van, in to work once a week, and it's something to look forward to. Stay away from 'The Big Eat' cheeseburger pie from Countdown, it's just a mince and cheese with a bit of pickle chutney.
Definitely do a road trip mate! It’s so delicious. You get a pie van into your work every week?! Whaaaaaat?! Best work ever 😂 thanks for watching. Hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena
Wow! Had fish and chips and meat pies in London but this looks next level! Looks amazing! Glad that your posting videos again. Hope to see you guys traveling soon. It would be a dream come true to visit your backyard, the food and scenery looks unbelievable! By the way, when is the next fishing video? It’s been awhile. My all time favorite vid is Sheena catching clams!
😍😍😍 thanks for watching 3JS! So happy you enjoyed this one. You would love the fish and chips here in NZ- they’re sensational. Hope you can visit one day 😄 Our next series will be abroad so hope you enjoy that one mate. And we want to get those fishing videos up on Chasing a Catch soon- the weather hasn’t been playing ball so we haven’t been out much. Come summer time there’ll be lots of opportunities 🤞 Thanks for taking the time to write! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate I was making pizza in the wood fired stove. I had some family and folks make requests. As long as they bought the toppings I made the pizzas. Some with traditional dough, gluten free, sourdough, and faccio. Plus one meat pie pizza. Only one complaint from my Mother which is the norm for her.
Hi George, thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed this one 😄 We’ve eaten at both heaps of times and Mangonui Fish Shop is our favourite but I must say I love it when Fresh & Tasty have flounder on the menu 🤤 Hope you’re having a great weekend! Cheers, Sheena
😂 you sound like me Peter! I was okay with it not being on the pāua pie and luckily the burger pie has tomato relish in it but you’re right, usually tomato sauce and pies go hand in hand in my books! Thanks for watching this one, burger pie is definitely one for the list! Cheers, Sheena
It is! It’s an icon 😄🙌 I’m not sure if ole Tom has visited before but I wouldn’t be surprised! We love the food there so much. Thanks for watching Wabbit- hope this video brought back happy memories of your time in the Far North! Cheers, Sheena
It’s fabulous pizza JASON- definitely worth eating. We’re contemplating it for lunch one day this week 😆 thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena
I had to subscribe my tummy was rumbling nd it's 6ish pm dinner time... So wot is it my little famz, pies, pizza's fishnd chips with alittle lotza salt of cause.. Yum! Homemade burgers are the best! Thanks for watching Logan, so glad you enjoyed this one- hope you like the rest of the content on our channel mate. Cheers, Sheena
Ahhh I know the exact pie you’re talking about Kirk! We arrived in Tokomaru Bay a couple of years ago ready to chow down on that pie and the shop was closed. We were gutted 😆 Bet it was tasty as! These ones are well worth eating! Thanks for watching mate. Cheers, Sheena
The Matauri Bay Fish & Chip shop on the top of the hill was always the best! We haven't been in a few years but the fish fillets were HUGE. We wished we hadn't ordered chips to go with 😆
No chips Maryanne!? Sacrilege 😂 We haven’t been so am putting it on the list for sure 😍🤤 thanks for the hot tip. Hope you enjoyed this video, thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
Amazing right?! 😍 I don’t think they do gluten free batter unfortunately but they’d probably grill up a piece of fish for you no worries! The fish is just next level. Thanks for watching mate, hope you enjoyed this one! Cheers, Sheena
Mangonui fish shop awww man my favourite spot! We used to fish off that wharf and if we didn't catch any fish well off we'd go for fish and chips instead lol We've fished and eaten all the way up and down that coast makes me hungry and homesick going on this road trip with yous but love it....💞💞🙏
Love it! It's a win win! It's such a special spot right? Eating fresh as fish overlooking that beautiful harbour- doesn't get much better! Whereabouts do you live now Lisa? Thanks so much for watching this series! Cheers, Sheena
@Chasing a Plate - Thomas & Sheena yes it is a special spot😁💞 I'm in Australia now NSW been here since 2003. I get home when I can... last time was just before the COVID lock down😫 hope to get back this year👌👌 I'm playing catch up lol watching your Japan tour at the moment is great too see it open again👏💞 keep safe God bless you both💚💞🙏
😍 thanks for watching jasen syms- it was so cool being able to film this part of NZ and the special businesses in it and to share it on our channel! Hope you enjoy the rest of the series! Cheers, Sheena
There is! The recreational fishing of whitebait is still very much alive! We don’t have it often as it’s so expensive to buy but we’ve heard stories of how prevalent the stocks were back in the day- crazy! Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
You don't have to go so far north as Houhora to get a burger pie. You can also find a pie shop in Maungataroto, on the southern end of SH 12, that makes and sells them. They may well be unique to Northland, but not to the Far North
Real Town Pies! I’ve just been drooling over their cream donuts and mince and cheese pies on Google 😂 We are totally stopping the next time we drive past! Thanks for watching Leo, hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Sheena
I used to get my fish n chips from Cable Bay dairy when I used to live in Cooper's beach.I suspect the old man who used to own it has probably passed on now.
I agree it’s a real splurge fallingwatersnz but the quality and the way the fish is caught makes it worth it for us. We’ve decided to eat fish and chips less and save and splash out at Māngonui Fish Shop occasionally 😆 Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoyed this video! Cheers, Sheena
Noooooooo! That sucks- hope they stock up before the summer rush! Thanks for watching and hope you get to sample one of those burger pies soon! Cheers, Sheena
It's a shame they didn't call in to "The Creamery" in Mangonui. It's better value with higher quality icecream and some of the most amazing milkshakes, spiders etc. It's levels above the cable bay store for a similar price. Locals tend to find the Manognui fish shop a bit over rated. It's definitely something to do for the experience, but it's pricy and quality can vary. In fairness, it can be hard to maintain quality when you are super busy with fish and chips, but I think they could do better. The fish and chip shop that is part of the old Pub and called "Fresh N Tasty" is generally the locals preference. It's also almost as close to the wharf. If I had to pick one place to enjoy a food treat in the Mangonui/Cable Bay area it would be "The Creamery" every time. It really is something special and doesn't have tourist prices either. Buy one of their famous Ferrero Rocher Milkshakes and you will also have an unbeatable photo opportunity as their presentation is outstanding.
Hi Alex, thanks for watching! We’ve gotta leave something to film for next time 😜 We’re locals too and eat/ have eaten at both Fresh N Tasty and Mangonui Fish Shop a number of times. I agree that the Fish Shop is pricier but for us it’s worth it for the quality and the way the fish is caught. I do love it when flounder is on offer at Fresh N Tasty though! Hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate That's fantastic that you are going to revisit us again. I absolutely enjoyed the video and can't wait to watch your next episode. I will keep an eye out for flounder at Fresh N Tasty. Keep up the great work!
i was a cook on a coastal trawler we cooked the fish fresh as can be, I have never bought fish again in my live from a supermarket or anywhere for that matter. Working on that boat ruined buying fish for me, you can tell by the smell in the shop it isn't fresh.
it's not perfect but it's not bad from a shop it's fresh frozen from a fishing boat, remember we aren't all bears we don't eat fresh kill when it's still alive we are just civil humans. some of us eat canned sardines that are 2 years old and we don't complain.
We catch a lot of our own fish and you’re so right- when you look at some of the fish in the supermarket it makes you ill- they’re clearly so old. Luckily this fish is fresh as it gets! Thanks for watching this one! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate it's not "old" it's just frozen. look at our best meats we process lamb and beef gets exported to all parts of the world and it's weeks old but still the best meat in the world, the same goes with our fish. don't be silly and just expect everything to be caught and eaten the same day, it still tastes the same.
becarefull of the salt it was being collected during my little brothers rahui. He went missing in the bay and ban was put on collecting from the sea untill the sea processes his body . Collecting the water in this time for currency was disrespectfull to my family and to the local iwi ,also my little brother could be in that salt.
Hi Scott, thanks for watching! I think at first glance it seems overpriced but once you delve deeper into the how the fish is sourced and caught like we talked about in this video you get why the prices are a bit higher. We’ve decided to eat fish and chips less often and to splash out occasionally at Mangōnui Fish Shop 😄 Hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate i live up here in the north and there is other really good takeaways that don't have their own quota and change a lot less for fresh fish and chips and are just as good that's why the locals won't go there $10 for a peace of fish it's a joke sorry but they are cashing in on the tourist but I still like yr video cheers
@@scottholmes8374 I get where you’re coming from 😄 We’re lucky we have loads of options around here! I also love the Kaitaia fish and chip shop- had a delicious feed there recently 🤤🙌
