Burghausen - The World's Longest Castle!
Burghausen in Bavaria, Germany is situated on the Salzach river close to the Austrian border. The Gothic castle (1,043m) is the longest castle in the world. It rests along a ridgeline. The oldest mention is documented in the year 1025. But, as latest excavations have shown, the area around the main court has at least been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Up until the Middle Ages, this castle was used by the Dukes of Lower Bavaria, who resided in Landshut. Under Heinrich XIII parts of the main castle were built. By 1387 the castle complex had reached the length we see today. Duke Georg the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut (ruled 1479-1503) was responsible for the final stage of expansion of the fortifications; he turned Burghausen Castle into one of the biggest and most modern fortresses of its day. After Duke Georg’s death and the reunification of the various Bavarian duchies, the castle lost its significance. In the centuries that followed it was used as a fortress, a prison, barracks and for residential purposes. Today there are several museums on the castle grounds.
