The first time I took a opiate I was 14yrs old. I cut myself with a pocket knife trying to remove the anti-theft-packaging from a cassette tape. Anyone old enough to remember remember cassette tapes will know what I am talking about. Anyway I cut myself, went to the ER, got a few switches and a script for some Tylenol #3, came home and took two as prescribed and it changed my entire life. By the time I was in high-school I was a full blown addict. It can happen to anyone. I wound up breaking into so many people's homes to steal their prescription medications. I never stole anything else but I could have easily been shot... justifiably!!
75 to 85% of opiate addicts started with a legitimate prescription for pain pills. Crazy. And I know what you were trying to remove from the cassette tape lol.

Tylenol 3 is not an opiate, it's just acetaminophen + codeine... you must have gotten something else.. either way my first script was oxycodone (percocet) and it has changed my life since...
what got me is he asked to stop for a second, but dude was like, "ya, no.. let's just start with bla bla bla"... did he really just blow straight through that super simple request?
This one was kind of tough bro, as a person still in recovery after 20 yrs of addiction it's always a rough ride for me to hear about someone else's journey but I'm glad he came out on top, it's definitely no easy thing to do. When I was in bpt jail I was stuck in the gym with 60 other ppl in the beds that looked like boats for 4 months then switched to cells and then when I was in Hartford I was in open dorm with 4 ppl cubicles I hated waking up at 430 give or take for breakfast and the lights stayed on

My mom was diagnosed with cancer and passed within 5-6 weeks. It’s a whirlwind blur. Glad to hear the positive energy behind the negative events.
Just for future reference Ian, when he touched his heart and asked for a break it looked like he was having a panic attack. So next time, just take a break, unless you edited it out. But other than that, LOVE the podcast!
School resource officers are the lowest level of police, they're a joke. One of the funniest things I've ever seen was a real cop tell the school resource officer from my middle school- "Stick to what you know best, wiping up snotty noses and searching lockers, leave the police work to the real cops buddy!" I was dying, I couldn't stand the guy so watching him get knocked down a notch made my week.

The whole judicial system needs to all be reworked because it's a lot of people sitting in there that they didn't harm anybody carrying a little weed or whatever and sitting in prison over some b*******like you said taking up space
I started out the same way,I'm 67 years old now pot, pills but I didn't ride the horse heroin, that what it was called backed in the daylight my day that is, and like he said got with wrong folks went from there, long time ago got off everything and totally sober now just saying thank you for sharing your story with us

Damn, dudes only a year older than me and has a very similar history to me. I think I got lucky with my stupid decision to sell drugs instead of robbing anyone, though i definitely paid the price for that too. Things could have gone so much worse though.
@@RaccoonNationtrust me that's better than 13 years on oxy and dope and 6 months on methadone. Alot more problems would've came up the other way around. Been halfway clean since January 2018 since I'm on subs after almost 20 years of using and in n out of jail and prison.

Ian bro I love the show and been rocking with you since about the 5th episode. So I really love what you’re doing. But I personally think you should work on the way you ask certain questions or respond , sometimes it seems like you’re almost judging the person for certain things. Not bashing just my opinion
This was a hard episode to watch. Perhaps next time leave the life changing choices til the end of the interview. Ask the guest questions about his prison stays that he had throughout his life. He said in the opening he went to jail/ prison so many times it was hard to remember so obviously that first stay wasn't a life changing moment. Us viewers wanna hear the gritty details throughout the interview and maybe leave the last 5 minutes for reflection
Ive done loads of time, 99.99% of the time if theres a issue with the big Man of the unit hes running the unit, ive seen many times huge dude walk on the unit n ask whos unit it is, 5 mins late ans a short chat its now there unit
