Fungus Gnats on Orchids: Why most Methods to Eliminate Them Don’t Work
Gnats are a commonly found pest when growing orchids. It doesn’t even have to be orchids: just leave a cut grapefruit on the kitchen table overnight and in the morning, you’ll probably have a gnat or two hoovering above it.
Gnats are drawn to the moisture and humidity that the orchid provides, and if you haven’t had them yet, buckle up, buttercup, you’ll probably going to have them somewhere down the line.
Almost every orchid grower experiences gnats at least once.
The good news is that the gnats in themselves won’t harm your orchid like other pests will. Adults might take a bite or two out of the leaves, but the biggest problem is that they exposed the open bite for viruses and other microorganisms to proliferate.

Thank you so much! Although you can find a thousand videos on how to get rid of these fungus flies. I couldn’t find how to address the fungus or why they are there.!Honestly from what I was finding it seemed like I wouldn’t want them gone because they were helping my orchid by eating the fungus. Yours has been the most informative on reasons and remedies. THANK YOU. Definitely subscribing right now!

I get polluted with these little aholes every year, and I didn't have any plants until this year. Multiple fly strips everywhere helped until they finally start dropping in numbers. Next year I'll try the mosquito bit things. Thanks 😊

Permethrin works great, I spray my solarium, the outside of the pots and when necessary the plants but that's rare if I spray the room seasonally. No pets allowed so no worries there! Great channel, cheers doll!

UGH Amanda lol, watered my Orchids around 1pm today, just went to check up on them and just saw some of these little buggers on one of my Orchids!! Got the fan on them hopefully this works otherwise repotting AGAIN🤦‍♀️😂

I notice that I had fungus or mold in the green wooden support sticks that came with my grocery store bought Phalaenopsis. So I took them out washed bbn them good and put them up in storage. I grow a small Bunch Bamboo that has stalks about the size of my pinky, and put them in the place of the sticks. Never saw mold on bamboo before, so hoping these will be better. Also when the potscdry out I plan to give them a good dose of fungicide. The media is new, and I dry them out between waterings. But if the funk is on the sticks, it is probably in the pot as well. It seems that Orchids hide their illness long before they get really sick, so you have to keep watching them to catch problems early. Bamboo looks more natural and I have plenty for free. And bamboo grows pretty well in most climates in many sizes. Mine grows 10ft tall with nothing bigger than my index finger. But if you want to grow it, make sure it is a bunch variety and not a runner. Runners can throw out a shoot 20ft from the main plant and get out of control quickly. While Bunch Bamboo grows in clumps, and spreads very slowly. I harvest with loppers and dry out well before I use it. Bottoms for tomatoes and tops for Orchids. I like "Free" best, got a lot of great ideas from Philppino channels on mounting in whole Coconuts to home made fertilizers. But you have some great DIY natural fertilizer recipes on your channel as well. Love your channel.

I have a question about about what you said about the dunks. You said to leave the orchid to soak overnight in this water. Can you explain this better please? Is it in their pot with the medium or do you remove the medium and just soak the roots after they are cleaned?

I just repotted my orchids with bark and peat moss a few months ago. I’ve gotten great growth after doing this but I have gnats now. I’ve cut back on watering but is the bark too tannic? I don’t know why I have gnats

I sprinkle mosquito coil ash (ie after burning the mosquito coil, I use the ash on my orchid, throw into the potting mix 1/4 tsp) I hv not have any fungus gnats since.

Omg lol…..the bug ones no that is. I had those fungus knots. Threw out a plant when I saw them pulled it right out of its pot. Guess what all the roots had died after i I transplanted it like a month later. Never again for me with moss and bark. Straight up Orchiata now. And they my p,ants already look somewhat better. Some are even starting to grow things,not quite sure what the things are yet. Still new to all of this. Thanks for the video.

I like the first option best (B....Thuringeria....Israelensis -- ??) and oddly enough I happen to have some handy. It was discovered in soil in Israel (fun fact). I'm a big believer in healthy soil, water, air, etc. It can be found at greenhouse suppliers, etc.

she said to fill the pot with this dissolved in water. Does this mean add to the plant?

@@nancyplunkett5171 It's non-toxic, you dissolve it in fresh rainwater or unchlorinated water and then add it to your plant's soil (water your plants with it). It's a kind of live probiotic, so synthetic chemicals like chlorine may interfere with its beneficial activity. It's great pest control for organic gardening. You don't need much either, because it reproduces itself as it feeds on the larvae.
