I finally find the way to get rid of the fungus gnats for 100%. I tried so many ways, and it was always a half measure. Before I will tell you about my amazing discovery, just a short information about this annoying creature. Fungus gnats are typically harmless to healthy house plants and humans - but can damage newly sprouted seedlings and sometimes their presence can indicate some other serious problems. Consequently, allowing the soil to dry may reduce their numbers, so I tried to managed by placing a layer of sand on the top of the soil, but this method only 30% effective and is not really working , because sand is heavy and after couple of watering sinking into soft garden soil and gnats continue breeding. Sand is hard to use on the delicate seedlings also.

I have tried to water the soil with potassium permanganate, strong oxidizer, that effectively kill fungus gnats eggs, but leave adult gnats untouched and if I missed eggs stage it is useless and not effective. I am completely against the use of pesticides and other toxic chemicals like peroxide, due to negative impact on plants and pets and humans. Besides all these chemical substances disturb delicate soil microbiota and eventually can make things worse.
Then I found that trap with apple cider is helping a lot by reducing fungus gnats number. It is simple trap can be made from any plastic bottle, just cut in half, then place the top part of the bottle upside down into the bottom part, secure and fill with cider. But this control method maybe just 50% effective and doesn’t eliminate gnats completely, they still in the house, although they do not damage my seedlings anymore and harmless for orchids, but they can carry some mushrooms spore and spread the plant diseases like Pythian.
