Regardless of what it looks like now, once thousands of vehicles get out there on that soft, muddy playa, it is going to turn into a vehicle recovery catastrophe of epic proportions. Watch!
You are living the dream Trent. I feel confident saying it doesn’t suck to be you. And you pulled it off when you were young so you have many years to enjoy. Bravo.
Usually have to be already rich or born into aviation to get this successful so soon/young, but his editing and story telling are topnotch, which helps hahah
@@annsanimationaddiction8024 It also helps to have two professional incomes and zero children. Having no children makes a monumental difference in time & money.
It’s Saturday, August 26, 2023 as I watch this. I repositioned to Reno today to fly passengers in and out of Burning Man in a Cessna 208 Caravans. My first, and likely, only year doing it. Edit: my first ever landing on a dirt Runway yesterday. Possibly the best landing I've ever had.
Many years ago, I was stationed at Edwards AFB in California. There are many dry lake beds in that area. Just a little rain and a huge lake appears immediately. It's really impressive.
As a Burner who’s staying home this year I think this is such an awesome idea to do a fly-over! So lovely to see all these places that are deep in my heart, from the air. Also kudos to you two for using the correct terminology-and for mentioning the fairy shrimp! You’re in the perfect position to get tickets and both fly into the BRC airport in for a day or two of otherworldly magic.
Trent - Turf Establishment - Runway. There are many types of grasses. Some start really easily but don't last long. Good starter grasses Bi-annual Rye's, 2 years (anyone can grow), gives cover for better slower grasses to start and get established. Perennial Rye last 3 + years coverage. Check your local feed & grain places for types of grasses that are good for your climate. Retired Landscape Architect here helping you out. Also depends on your rain coverage for your area. Look for a good seed mix with three types of grasses mixed together. Seed about 100 lbs. per acre. Broadcast seed. And if you want add 400lbs of 12-12-12 fertilizer per acre to help it get started. Drag with a tractor and york rake to get seed into soil. Will also help smooth runway out. Fertilizer not necessary will help weeds grow too. Best time to do, Spring and Early fall. September would be perfect time. I will love to see a nice green grass strip in your yard. Tell us how long it is ?
Just watched this video in my sprinter van at burning man. Love your content and the peek at what it looked like a week ago. I arrived on Thursday and it was dry then, looks the same as previous years from the playa. Cheers!
@@cwired9407 left Sunday no issues. Learned plenty from Matt’s off road recovery over the years. Low tire pressure, Traction control off and keep moving.
excited for the hangar being complete because it means more little mini flight videos *hopefully! so wish I could afford to fly, but since I can't afford myself a bush plane, I am so happy to follow along and live vicariously. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm still gobsmacked about how green it is in August...AUGUST!...and it's almost September. I've lived here for 28 years and I don't remember the hills still retaining the slight green tint of Spring. Thanks for this video. I was just asking my spouse, this morning, if she knew if Burning Man was letting the workers in and then I looked on line and found the RGJ article. Your video would have answered my question if I had just gone to RU-vid first. I'm not a great fan of Burning Man, nor do I loath it. I think it serves as entertainment for the Truckee Measows as we watch them all come and go. Still, I'll avoid Costco this week.
Wow!!! I have a cousin who lives in Susanville and I've driven out there around Granite Peak through Gerlach and Empire on the 34, I've seen snow out there in the Winter and the dry, dusty desert in Summer but I've never seen it covered in water like that. Amazing views, Thank You @TrentPalmer (need more FLYING) for sharing these amazing views!
On the dry lake at Lemmon valley just southeast of your home, in the early 70's, the lake was very wet. An individual drove his 4-wheel drive pickup onto the north edge of the wet playa about 300 to 350 yards. He broke through the crust and buried that truck up to the frame. It was too far out to allow a tow truck to retrieve it. The remains of the truck were still there in the early 2000's, but had rusted away so bad all that was left was the engine block and a pile of rust. Remember, the playa is salt. We laughed for years over that every time we drove by!
Thank you so much, I've only been 10 times since 07 and last year kicked my butt. I cried when I watched your video and I hope you give us a few more videos of BRC these next couple weeks. Beautiful thank you
2015 I was at Burning Man, just as we finished setting up our camp they sky opened up and poured rain for an hour or so and they had to shut down the playa as it was impossible to even walk on never mind drive on.
Burning Man is a fantastic event for aviation. The morning scenic flights allow pilots to take up attendees for flights around the city. They even have their own charter ops which is made up of FAA Part 91 and 135 for-hire pilots. There's also a CerealGiving program for not-for-hire pilots to bring people to the event for, at most, a cost-sharing (which is allowed under FAR). BRC Airport (88NV) has an amazing culture.
So fabulous to see Freedomfox at Home. You have a lot of room in that hangar (which will tend to fill up) but you manage things well. I am so happy for you and Hailey. Patiently waitng for more vids.
I wonder what level the water table is at? A few vehicles driving over it will compress the ground and bring moisture to the surface. Could be a nightmare of stuck vehicles and chewed-up ground. Get the tow trucks lined up.
Clay slime. I remember that from when I was stationed at Incirlik, Turkey. Will build up 2 inches under your shoes and you'll be wearing platforms. The shrimp? When they dry and rot it's going to smell like you're living in Salt Lake, Utah which stinks.
Look I am sorry, but I could not help but to chuckle a little bit when you said, "We have been getting pounded with an inch of rain." I live on the Texas gulf coast, we got 52 inches of rain in two days, when our buddy Hurricane Harvey rolled through. That was funny. Love the hanger.
Great brief excursion! That Fly Ranch Geyser looks very interesting. I did notice your exterior accent lighting this time around. Looks great! Some flat-panel lights affixed to the bi-fold door that only come on when the door is in the opened position seems like it would be very useful for opened door night work out there. I am looking forward to what you have planned out there. Thanks for the excellent content! It is appreciated.
I just discovered your channel and I'm sure glad I did! I have recreated in this area for many years and know it well. Crazy seeing so much water on the playa. In 2021, there was a decent rain event just after the unofficial burn that happened that year. For about a day, you could barely walk on the playa without slipping and falling. Then last year in mid-August there were some pretty significant thunderstorms out there, and the edges of the playa were very wet and muddy for a couple of weeks. You're living my dream.. I plan to move over the mountain to the high desert somewhere when I retire or perhaps even sooner. Just love it up there!
That Tonga-Hunga volcano that erupted in early 2022 put more moisture into the stratosphere than has ever been measured. Some estimates are that we will have excessively wet winters and hot summers for the next 3 to 10 years.
When you're taking off from your airstrip at home, do you have to make any radio announcement? Or do you, as a matter of safety and good fellowship? Burning Man may be Mud Man this year!
Saw you guys up there on Flightradar while I was sitting in my Reno hotel room overlooking KRNO listening to the TFR troubles. I just happened to pan up to check on approaching traffic, and caught you guys on the return flight. Think it was Wednesday the 23rd? Seemed like a great day for a flight.
Great video and content. As a 20x Burner who is skipping a year it was fun to see the city trying to take shape. I will bet a fun time will be had by all
Wonderhussey travels about in these areas and has a house in 130° Pahrump and I wondered why she was in Montanna when she usually is at Burning Man... That place ! Everything from Slab City to that friggin desert ...hey it's bad enough in PHX 123° July 11 took a picture of my weather station just to prove it !
First time seeing you. The video popped up in my algorithm, and I'm glad I checked it out. The geyser and little shack you zoomed in on looked really neat. You're living the dream man. I saw experimental on your wing, what are you flying around? I love pipers, but your rig looks a tad different in the raddest way. Cheers from NC
Looks like the bonneville salt flats in spring def dont want to drive on that. I used to work for a rental car company at slc international and so many tourists would try to drive on the salt flats. Which are only driven on in august september and they get stuck and a lot of the times total the car. Once a gl 500 amg got towed in and there was a salt water line up to the bottom of the rear windows the whole front of the truck was clearly submerged in the salt.
Dats a beautiful bush plane you got there. I once flew on a bigger bush plane from Juneau Alaska to Gustavus island through the razor sharp snow peaks, it was an experience you can’t never forget.
HA! reminds me of a story during the X-15 test flights when Neil Armstrong had a great idea to test the moisture of a dry lake bed by performing a soft touch and go and if its sticky he will just throttle out and fly back. Great way to save a day driving out there when you could fly and be back in a hour. Chuck Yeager who was in charge of the pilots said it would never work. Well, Chuck with his brass balls told Neil that if he really wants to try it, he will ride back seat with him. Neil ended up sinking the jet in the mud and Chuck was heard laughing over the radio. It took months for the lake bed to dry enough to retrieve the aircraft.
I don't even think you can drive on a dry Lake bed when it's even remotely wet I've done it before and I almost didn't make it back off because it was slicker than baby oil on glass!!!! I used to deliver travel trailers and fifth wheels out to burning man for one guy from Dubai that would send about 20 to 30 units that he would rent for the participant's out there and even when it's dry that stuff looks a little sketchy because it's practically just packed talcum powder..... If it all works out at least still keep the dust down!!!💁♂️💨💨💨
I drove out unto the alkali flats around Lovelock, Nevada after it had rained one time, and never again. It was like grease. My Dodge 4X4 spun in circles until it hit a dry patch.
Fantastic video! 43 years ago I worked a season at a mine near Sulphur, how things have changed! Harkens me to John Prine's: "And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County Down by the Green River where Paradise lay Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away".
My pilots license requires me to deny flat earth claims. It’s in the fine print when you take your check ride and sign on the dotted line. Jk. But the earth is definitely not flat. Sorry
