If you are trying to figure out if you are burning oil from worn piston rings or worn valve seals in this video we will explain what are they symptoms of burning oil from valve seals and burning oil from piston rings. Sometimes it is easy to confuse whether you are burning oil from valve seals or from piston rings but knowing what to look for you may be able to figure it out. We demonstrated on this 4 cylinder engine the difference between burning oil from valve seals and piston rings but it will apply to 3 cylinder engines, v6, v8, v12 and more. Valve seals and piston rings are not very expensive but they are hard to replace.

Excellent video !! My story: the spark plug in 1 of my 8 cylinders was getting fouled with carbon build up, to where it stopped firing. Every 1000 miles I had to change out the 1 spark plug, the other 7 were fine. This went on for 2 years. After reading up on it, the problem seemed to be a bad valve stem seal. I discovered that instead of replacing the seal, I could try using Lucas Stop Oil Leak additive, or switching to high mileage oil, both of which had extra lubricants for seals that may have gotten old or hard or slightly shrank. The extra lubricants would cause the seals to soften and expand. I did both, and the problem went away !!

I have a 91 Toyota paseo EL-44 motor, it is a non-interference motor. Motor does not smoke or nor does it leak anywhere. As far as I know, bad piston rings as well smoke up a lot . I just don’t get how my valve seals aren’t smoking up through my exhaust? Is it the way the motor is built ? Or? Lost compression on cylinder 1 and 2. Thought it was the timing because when I tried to start the car, it made a fast cranking like there wasn’t any compression at all. So then I did timing and was still the same. Took out the head only to find out I had 4 seals out by the exhaust manifold thingy. Honestly I’m still learning about cars and would love to lear and watch more of your videos.

I've got an 86 f150 witha 302 that has alot of miles like over 200,000. it was doing very well and then it had a bucking problem which was either the fuel filter or vaccume leak which is mostly fixed now( no problem with oil) I replaced the exhaust manifold do to a crack which eventually busted in 2 and now its got a oil leak and smoke coming from crank case, exhast and everywhere else like it looks like im driving a California wild fire. there is some oil on spark plugs but nothing horriable. I was showing low oil pressure with there being well over the amount needed so I'm assuming it may be the oil pump and oil pan gasket. any idea on if I should swap engines or try the oil pump and pan gasket 1st?

Hey mate thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas! I have a question for you. I have a Golf Gti Mk5 with the famous FSI turbo engine that 9 to 10 of them use a lot of oil, and when i say a lot i mean about 1 litre every 1000 kms. The common thing that all these engines got is that you can't see any smoke coming out of the exhaust! Some times you get a bit of smoke when you accelerate hard but not what you are saying on the video. Can you explain why that happens? Cheers

Oil consumption with no apparent oil smoke often indicates collapsed oil control ring expanders or worn oil control rings.

Any advice? My v6 showed low compression on 2 cylinders, leak down test proved to be a ring issue (air flow observed from oil dipstick). I decided to pour about 4 capfuls of atf in those problem cylinders, and crank the car with all plugs removed. I think my situation is futile, damage has been done, to point of no return., lol. The engine is thirsty, regarding oil consumption, btw

May suzuki gs 125 is smoking during morning start and every 1st start but when i drive it when i look at it the smokes will be gone so i have a broken valve seal ?

my car blows smoke after sitting at idle for a minute and then driving but goes away while driving, but then it also smokes at high rpm. other than that it doesnt smoke at all. do you think its just my valve seals? you said the pistons would pretty much cause smoking 100% of the time but you also said it would smoke more at high rpm, mines only after idle and high rpm.

If is blue smoke and smoke all the time it is most likely your rings.Get you some Rislone stop smoke 16.9 oz or 2 of them which I quart.I would get some Seafoam or Rislone condition and cleaner .This will free sticky rings from carbon build up .After you clean first,change oil and filter .Since you have a 8 I would add Iguart of stop smoke ,mixe with oil.Read direction carefully.Thi should help.Do Not Flush the engine.Hope this helps.

When I start my truck it throws blue smoke from the exhaust pipe, but the smoke will go away a little less than 1 minute...I also have oil coming out of spark plug hole and the exhaust manifold, on the same side of oily spark plug...can it be the valve stem seals???

I dont loose oil and I dont have blue or black smoke in engine operating temparature, but my compression is low (below 9.5) and smells fuel from exhaust, also have black spark plug on regular baais even after cleaningbit regularly and has rich mixture which causing low gas mileage. What could be the peoblem???

I think it's a bit over simplified to say blue smoke at certain times is valve seals & other times is rings. These smoke symptoms can very much alike for either, & should not be a definite indication. Is it not best to do a compression test? If there is too low compression in a cylinder, then this would be better indication of worn rings?

Hi bro i wana ask you a question, yesterday i has changed my motorcycle piston kit,and i also change more part like ( valve,valve ring(seal), & valve liners,) because my motorcycle smokey. But after all installation processes finish, my motorcycle still smoky, what's wrong...? Im confused My piston rings insallation is true, my piston insallation is true, my valve, valve seal, valve liners is new, everything is OK i don't make a mistake, but my motorcycle still smoky, im really confused. Sometimes when i start engine that smoke come, but after egine warm smoke is noting, but some times im start engine smoke is nothing (smokeless), im very " Confused because my valve, valve seals,valve liner is new.i hope you can help me answer this question.

If you already have the head off you should have already done dry and wet test to confirm but what do you suggest doing when we have the head off? Only oil residue on block? Anything else that would point to worn rings?

Burnt oil on the sides of the piston above the rings. But cos its all apart. Put the rings back in the cylinder and measure the ring gap

Mine valve stem seals are busted, the car won’t consume noticeable oil on long journey (like 2000km highway driving) but smoke quite a bit in traffic. That’s how I make sure it’s not my piston ring😢

@Gary Zhang for a Toyota corolla or prius engines it seems as if the valve stem seals crack and wear down because people don't change their oil on time the first 150k miles. The negligence shows with oil consumption at the 150k mile mark. I know some guys that take care of their cars and change oil on time and start burning oil big time at 225k. If you know how to do an engine rebuild then go for it all and replace the seals on top of other parts too.

Another hint is that if you are using a lot of oil, say a quart every 500 miles, think oil control rings.

Yes if it is a piston that has a worn oil ring. That cylinder/piston will have low compression

You need the valve stem seals AND valve stems replaced. Just had to do this with my classic 1990 MB 300E. Runs great now.....did it in Jan. 2021.

Hey man I have a manual car and the smoke is not that blue it’s more white than blue. And when I’m driving and shifting it doesn’t smoke. When I start downshifting from 6 to 5 to 4 to 3 to 2 there’s no smoke but as soon as I shift from 2 to 1 and hit my brakes to slow down to a stop then smoke comes out. When I’m driving I don’t get any smoke .. what you described didn’t really match my symptoms

Can Valve Seals smoke only with engine braking? I mean when u go from the hill with gear engaged, and after that you press full GAS and it smoke. There is only one situation, when it´s smoke..... Neutral never, after start engine never...

Honda is telling me that my piston rings are bad on my 2012 Honda Accord with only 115, 000 miles. I find that hard to believe. P0301 engine light came on - recommends just changing the plugs - misfiring.

Head gasket would not necessarily cause oil burning, unless it's the head gasket has blown. When valve seals go bad it allows oil to drop from the valves into the combustion chamber, thus causing this issue, or oil will blow by the piston rings and burn in the combustion chamber, same effect

How about no smoke at all. Just oil disappearing. Zero leaks.Quart every 800 miles. Changeg VCG, bunch of other seals, and got it up to a quart every 1300 miles.
