Wow Sam, so that's what a clean shop looks like. Been so long for mine, I had forgotten. Great video on the burning affect. Been watching Martin do it across the pond and was thinking about trying it on the next bowl. Been a little afraid to ruin a bowl, but watching you do it in the rough turned state takes care of that problem. Thanks for sharing. Fred
Terrific video, Sam! I've occasionally thought about doing some decorating with fire, but never carried through. This video really helps. I hope you'll do another video to show the finished bowl.
Awesome work Sam! I love how creative you can get using these techniques. I'm rarin' to get back in the shop after being out of town and try these things out.
I've done this with many projects in the past, mostly plaques. I haven't tried it on a lathe project yet. If done with pine you'll get the same result as ash. Doing this on oak is a little harder. like you said, go slow and take your time. It looks nice on deer mount plaques as well. Nice video.
I watched Nick Cook demo burning on an ash platter. I like scorching the outside of an ash bowl and then using liming wax to highlight the growth rings.
it's similar to woodburning decoration technique (pyrogravure in French). I use it a lot to decorate wooden items, engraving. I even use that technique when I haven't a lathe to help me to diggin a wooden plate. It's a very interesting contrast black burn and unburned wood.
Question Sam, Have you ever done any Flame Burning, On Wooden Unfinished Baseball Bats at all.? I am going to try doing a few for my Grand Sons, To put up in their Rooms along with their Baseball stuff etc Again Thanks for sharing etc. You do some Beautiful wood work in burning it in etc.
Loved the video, and I know you didn't have to tell us how dangerous it was, but im glad you did. I know guys who see sawdust and wanna grab a lighters. But for real though, upgrade your coffee pot. Imma send you a new one.
What would the opposite do? That is burn/scorch the wood then texture it. Would the texture bring the under light wood out? Sam I'm going to have to try this (maybe both ways) to see. Again thanks for sharing your expertise with us.
This is a great question and point to make. The sequence you apply something to wood will alter the effect. Just try it. I should look different.... Sam
Zach W It may if you spin the piece very slowly. My experience is that if the wood is turning, the flame does not have enough time to burn the wood. Sam
Has numerous information in this woodworking book “pepe amazing plan” (Google it). There are several designs in the book but it is mainly explaining the procedure of how you can do different things and what devices to utilize to achieve them. Overall, this book satisfied my basic wish to find out about woodworking.
Guys I am beginner in woodworking and i found a website named *TopFineWoodworking .Com* and i learned a lot at their. i also recommend this website to all you guys
Yes you may be right about the black shoe polish., Then maybe something I need to try. Burning or scorching wood leaves a very unique pattern in the wood. Thanks for the idea about the shoe polish. Later Sam
Don Lyons .... you see a lot of platters naturally falling out of trees where you come from? I'm pretty sure fire is more natural than than carving our turning, unless I completely misunderstood your comment.
