Join me for a walk around the centre of one of the greatest historic mill towns in Lancashire: Burnley! Once one of the foremost centres of industry in the world, this lively town rose from a mere few farmhouses to become the major urban hub we know today, and is still full of history from its heyday.
On our walk around Burnley, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Burnley Magistrates' Court, Burnley Library, Burnley Peace Garden, Burnley Miners' Memorial, Place de Vitry-sur-Seine (Town Square), Looking to the Future sculpture, Burnley War Memorial, The Boot Inn, The White Lion pub, Charter Walk shopping centre, The Swan pub, Burnley Lock-Up, the old Red Lion Hotel, Burnley Mechanics, Burnley Town Hall, Burnley Technical School, Burnley Police Station, Burnley Central Stores, the River Calder, The Corkhouse, and Hammerton Street.
Thank you so much to the following sites for their help in my research of Burnley:

Good evening! Thank you so much for helping the channel to over 8,200 subscribers - I really hope you enjoy this evening's walk around Burnley, filmed back in the spring on a lovely sunny day! There's a lot of history to be found in Burnley, but one thing that we didn't talk about on our walk was the town's historic football club, Burnley FC. Founded in 1882, Burnley are among the oldest teams in Britain, and have played their games at Turf Moor stadium to the east of the town centre since 1883, making the stadium the second longest-continuously used professional football stadium in England, after Deepdale in Preston to the west!

Really enjoyed this , my family goes back hundreds of years in burnley . One half came over from Cork during the potato famine and my other half are burnley through and through. My grandad was working as a miner during the Hapton valley pit disaster and was part of the rescue crew , he was never the same mentally and suffered what we now know as PTSD

Thank you very much - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video of your family's historic hometown - it certainly is a fascinating place full of history! The new Miners' Memorial alerted me to the tragedy of the pit disaster, it's a shame to hear that your grandad was caught up in it and affected by it for so long. But certainly, a long Burnley heritage is something to be very proud of :)

Is really not much changed since medieval times, I would say a few things new since then like tesco, aldi and a lot bookies. Saracens also overtake this place now...oh almost forgot recently council banned urinating or defecating also skateboarding in the centre so little progress.

Great video. Loved it. Burnley is what I would call a ‘grand town’. The architecture to me of equal value to anything the Romans left. I can see why the people of Burnley hold a real sense of pride for their town. I became fascinated by Burnley in the 1980’s. Supporting Carlisle I was aware of their football teams massive fan base. Their lowly league position made this only more intriguing. It was this kind of fascination that moved me to study geography. The rise, falll and rise again of a place like Burnley helps understand our own culture and sense of place. Fantastic work and captured on a great day to show case what a fine town Burnley looks. Thanks for posting

So beautiful. They also have a remarkable Weavers Triangle complex of awesome mills with a museum, shops and restaurants by the canal. Burnley's industrial mill history is certainly one that the town shows off with pride, and the museums and other conversions that have been made in recent years really do bring it to life even in the modern day, as the town itself continues to evolve with the times too :) Thank you so much for watching and for your very kind words as always - I'm so glad to hear your thoughts on places like Burnley, and delighted to hear you enjoyed the video!

Sadly an important part of the weavers triangle Clocker Tower mill burnt down in 1987.strangely it had burnt down soon after being built in 1840 but was rebuilt by 1860 with the clock tower added so the workers who didnt have watches wouldnt be late as 5minutes late another person was hired to do your shift

Just to add that a lot of the old town or centre used to be around the bottom of ormerod road near where the Talbot pub is. the church there was classes as the high church for the area I am led to believe. But once the market area was granted and moved to the area around the bottom of Manchester road then this became the new centre with a new market hall build. Can anyone offer more on this if it's correct?

My great uncle 'Tommy marren' was the greatest boxer to come from our town ....he retired as welter weight champion of the North England....between 1927-1934 he had 167 fights i think ...amongst his many wins he beat the champion of South Africa 'panther purchase' , ....he used to do 12 hours a day down the pit and boxing was his down time lol .....in 1934 he retired with the 'jem mace' belt which is still in our family today I beleive . Jem mace was a famous bare knuckle fighter from 1800s in Ireland......look him up , you can find all his bouts and boxing record online 👍

Some stunning looking buildings next to some ; too be honest awful looking ones. Such is history! But great walkaround video again.

Indeed Burnley is quite the mix of architecture - I've never been the biggest fan of some of the stuff from the '60s around the world, but the industrial-era buildings in Burnley really do showcase the town's history in great style :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

You only really appreciate the old buildings ,the arcitecture when you stand back and observe them ? Towns change but mostly not for good ,as their character goes with the change ,replaced by arty farty ,ugly buildings and statues ? But what a history Burnley has ?

Very much so! Often the places we walk past day in and day out really have a marvellous history to them, not to mention some of the most beautiful ones as we see in Burnley :) Thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

Isn’t it a bit weird that the English governments have destroyed places like Burnley which now suffers massive unemployment and poverty but some of these folk from Burnley will say things like they are “proud to be English” and are patriotic even though they have been completely shafted by their own people. Very strange.

It looks good on the video, and has improved on the whole (i think, maybe?), but wen you walk through the town centre on a weekday afternoon its the same old really. Lucky growing up in hurstwood,! Now that has changed, village much the same, but up and round the reservoirs and car park (which is now basically anything over the bridge) on a nice day - like bloody blackpool😂. I remember goin up there on a saturday and not seeing anyone all day. Hi, from cliviger!
