Wow, Lindie, I don't say things like this easily but I think it is incredibly brave of you to upload this video. I just want to let you know that your 12 languages for 2020 video was one of the biggest motivators for me to (re-)start my language journey, eventually even leading to my decision to study linguistics as my master (which is what I'm doing now), and I'll forever be grateful for this. You don't need to prove anything, and you don't need to "perform" because what you've done already has such a positive impact on so many people. So, no matter, what 2022 brings, you can be proud. :)

Thank you all for watching a little more serious, raw and honest video of mine. Have a wonderful break and recharge for the new year! 💖 If you're experiencing language burnout, here's a video I made with a friend a while ago discussing the topic at length: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1bgJ8IQU5TA.html EDIT: I am absolutely overwhelmed by the heartwarming, kind and supportive comments, even from those who say they don’t usually comment. Thank you all for understanding and being supportive ! To clarify, i am not stepping away from RU-vid or languages, but I am taking a break and might be slower with uploads. Love you all so much! 💖💖💖

Even when the world and men was created, god dedicated the 7th day for rest. The sabbath day. It’s so so so important! And I agree, workaholics and busyness is being praised and that’s wrong. That being said, I’d love to get some input on how I can learn Japanese and korean as a beginner simultaneously since I get bored easily like add! Also, I’d LOVE to learn UX UI design, so can you pleaaaaaase give me some resources for me to self learn? If you ever want a friend who is INFJ or similar and just a girlfriend to chat about anything, let me know I’d love to be a friend and support to you! Greeting from a fellow Christian :)

Thank you for making a video on this topic.. since it’s something many of us have faced, but people in language learning community rarely talk about it. While it’s nice to learn a lot of languages, they require a lot of time and mental energy, which I feel many people forget. Personally I had to catch myself and learn to limit myself to learn only a few languages, so that I can protect myself from burnout. I wish you good health and look forward to your future content!

But as you said, rest is important. I send you lots of love and thank you for being that open with us. We have to be kind and patience with ourselves, and that's how I want to start the year ♡

Hi Lindie, I really value you honesty towards your audience. I am from the Czech Republic and I am an English teacher. I am a Christian, too. I know, what it means, when a person is really exhausted. You are absolutely right about the natural need of rest - God knows why he created the night and one day off a week is something we need more, than we are willing to admit very often. I can see, how busy my students are (I teach adults, who go to work) and I know myself a bit. I'd prefer to study and read books nightly, but... You are a very gifted person obviously and God is using you in an amazing way. But with this video you did something, that showed others, what (who) is wiser than all the textbooks. Someone, who knows, how to live. Thank you once again. David

As a Mexican Hungarian forced by her mother to study languages and maintain several others, I feel your pain. This year I did my jlpt, next year I have to do my Cambridge proficiency one and if it opens, the Delf. Having everything planned out in a hobby makes it feel so heavy and suffocating, especially since my mom gives me no breaks. I love that you love Hungary, I haven't seen my family in years too because of corona, so I just want you to know you're not alone. Not at all. Lindie, it’s okay to share how you feel. I completely agree that people push others to do as much as they can in this time, but it is a necessity to rest. God commanded a sabbath for the Israelites and I don’t think it was for Himself, but for His people. Whether it’s a day, a week, or a couple of months, get some rest. Hardworking humans tend to not know when to stop. It can definitely lead to burnout. It is great that you are forcing yourself to rest because you realize you need it. Some don’t recognize it or even ignore it. Also remember that you’ve being doing something most only dream of doing (I included) : learning this many languages and with great success. You have been gifted with amazing talent and ability. Rest for however long you feel you need to rest. We are here for you!

Hi Lindie, and thank you for sharing. I don't know how you've done it all. They say that a learning curve isn't a straight line, but a series of ups, plateaus, maybe even downs, then up again. It's possible that with letting yourself rest, all this wonderful stuff will "percolate" in your brain, and you'll emerge with new insights. BTW, my principal languages right now are French and Chinese. Chinese is the new one, (12 years or so of snail's pace learning). I translate my grocery lists into Chinese and French and wear T shirts to the store with Chinese characters in hopes of attracting a conversation. Occasionally it works. Best wishes.

Hi Lindie, as a member of your audience I would like to say that as much as I enjoy watching your videos and seeing that you've uploaded another one, I would hate to think that the pressure of uploading comes before your mental health. I hope you rest well and find a balance that works for you. Like you said, your audience cares about you, and I would much rather you uploaded less frequently/took a break and found more balance, than trying to keep pushing yourself in order to try to fill any 'obligation' having a RU-vid channel makes you feel that you have. We love you and your authenticity, that's why we're here, so thank you for your video and I hope you continue to be authentic to yourself and your needs ❤️

I just love your videos, Lindie . I discovered your videos when I decided to learn Korean and your videos popped up in a search and I have been hooked on them ever since! I have been amazed at your strength and tenacity and your thirst for language learning and how great you are at explaining things and expectations people have about learning a language. But I do have to say, I did see this coming. Probably because I’m on the outside looking in and when you’re in that spot you don’t see what’s going on with yourself until you get to your breaking point. From what I can see, you have been leading up to this point for a little while and you know what? it’s OK! I think sometimes that we put too much pressure on ourselves to do things not only for ourselves but for other people; especially in a place like RU-vid. And then having a website, a blog, etc. All that adds up to a stress that can get overwhelming. Just know that we are here for you, that we understand your need for a break and to refresh and renew yourself. We as language learners, know that language goals can put a special kind of stressor on the learner. There’s nothing wrong with telling people, “hey, I need a time out” and look at yourself and say, “I need to step back”. I think that because of the pandemic, people are finally starting to learn that it’s OK to say, you know what? I really can’t do this the way I used to do this anymore. We love you and your channel…take care of YOU. We aren’t going anywhere. Thank you for your raw honesty with us and sorry about my long winded post!

맞아요, we need rest. Our mind and body can only do so much, it needs rest, physical and mental; and to spend some time with ourselves, family, or friends. I suffered from burnout before too, because I would study every day for hours for months non-stop, without resting. I am the type that keeps on studying and studying if I enjoy learning something and get excited about it, and I don't take rests, but after a long period of time I stop completely due to exhaustion and have a hard time getting back to it again, it takes me months if not over a year to go back to studying again. So now I am trying to change the way I study and rest every now and then or cut down on the time I spend on studying to not overwork myself. And thank you 🌹 for your great videos, including this one, we all need a reminder to take a break. Lastly, loneliness is hard, I really felt your hardship, may God relieve your loneliness and guide me, you, and everyone to the path of peace and happiness. 🤲

Hey Lindie, Thank you for sharing this. 2 points: 1: Balance is useful in many aspects of our lives. In language learning, if all I do for months is working with textbooks, formal grammar and vocabulary lists, then switching to consuming content, having conversations, immersive activities will be helpful. If, on the other hand, my work on a given language has been just about immersion and picking up the language informally, I will benefit from sitting down with a book. If I have tried learning something by improvising, winging it, for a while, I may benefit form some goal setting and figuring out a more structured approach. And the other way around, if you have been 100% organized and accountable for too long, you will probably benefit from switching to a more relaxed approach. 2: Regular rest and regularly disconnecting from the 24/7 news and social media cycle is healthy. I am an observant Jew, I observe the Sabbath which includes disconnecting from electronic devices, communication tools and media for one day each week. Lately I have heard about secular people trying periods of "digital detox". When you have a while, try and read something about these topics - it is all about creating some rules and structure to make sure you get some rest and I can assure you at least that a weekly day of obligatory rest works very well and helps my mental health a great deal. A possible third point would be not hesitating to talk to a mental health professional or therapist when you might need one. This is just common sense, if I suspected that there is a problem with my heart, I would seek out a cardiologist, if the electrical wiring in my apartment did not look safe, I would get an electrician to look at it, and I did talk to a therapist for a while during a period of my life when I got overwhelmed by a combination of issues that created a burden on my mental health. But from what you are saying I understand that you are taking care of this aspect, so maybe I am just stating the obvious to reassure you. Stay strong and take care of yourself.

I’ve watched videos of people talking greatly about you, so this is the first time I’m seeing a video from you! And I could so tell you are born of the Spirit by the way you spoke before even talking about rest! I can’t imagine all the doors and opportunities God has opened up for you through your language journey. It’s a deep passion for me to be a missionary and share the true Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who don’t know Him. I’m currently studying Arabic intensely and I know a little Chinese. I’m strong in Spanish and okay in Portuguese (85% shared vocabulary, but phonetically WAY different). I love your confidence, and can clearly see the Love of God in and through you. I pray MANY blessings and TRUE rest this year, and I pray that God would use you IMMENSELY to gather His people from All nations, tribes, and tongues. Using you. If you’ve read this far, thank you - I want to inspire you. “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head, but if you speak to him in his language that goes to his heart.” Lindie, share the beautiful news of Jesus Christ everywhere you go. I memorized the Romans Road to Salvation in 5 languages and God has used me to speak to people in their language. I know you can do it in more. May God use you, and may His face shine upon you brightly this new year. - Dan Caban

What you're saying in this video definitely makes sense and it did resonate. I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch but I'm glad you have someone who helps you *hugs* Not setting any goals that could resemble any kind of pressure in a time when so many things are anxiety-inducing is definitely the way to go! I think I'll try and follow your lead and set only the goal to "enjoy my learning experience" and not put any kind of pressure. I've been learning Italian and German for the past couple of yeras and last year, during the second lockdown, when I needed something to focus on outside of the Whole Situation, kdramas came into my life, and with it Korean and it's given me so much joy! (This is what led me to your channel, as it happens). Anyway, all that to say, you're so right, language learning is something so many of us do for fun, because we want to, as an aside project, as a hobby, and it's nice to get things in perspective and say this should never become a burden and we don't owe anything to anyone, apart from ourselves and only to enjoy ourselves. Anyway, all that to say: hope you feel better, take care!

First of all, I have a crush on your personality, I'm looking for a girl like you but of course they're hidden and few and far between 😅. You work so hard, are so humble, and I'm also almost in the same lonely shoes as you when learning languages. I subscribed to you because you give me hope that I'm not alone in my language journey, and the struggle is hard so your videos always calm me down. It's very understandable on how your feeling due to your situation, not wanting to make goals is fine and taking a rest is necessary. But just know, whatever the goals and lessons that God put in your heart, they're all struggle that are blessings and I hope you don't get discouraged.

Lindei, congratulations for your courage to speak all of this out. Yeah, we have to confront this culture that praises productivity and demonizes rest. Our biggest challenge is to find a balance between those things. I had to work it out in my own life, and I’m still doing it in fact. I took some counseling sessions, and everyday, by the grace of God, I try to maintain a balanced lifestyle. However, when I notice that I have fallen again into this keep-yourself-busy culture, I try to stop again, rest, and see what I can let go. I thank God p because He himself gave an example of rest when He rested on the Sabbath and made it holy. He knows we need a rest. He knows that we are wholistic beings, and that, by getting too tired, it won’t affect only our physical, but also our entire being, including the spiritual dimension. I will be praying for you. Thank you again. May the Lord be with you. I love your videos.

Hello Lindie, I have followed your channel here and there for a few years now and you have always appeared to be one of the most genuine RU-vid language bloggers out there. By that I mean it's clear that your content comes from a place of genuine love for languages and your abilities within those languages you speak, well...speak for themselves. You are immensely talented. You are also human. We laugh, cry, dance, sing, feel happy and sad, loved and lonely at times, sometimes all at the same time in some inexplicable way. You are clearly self aware enough to know what has been happening in your life to make you feel the way you do and I sincerely hope that now I'm writing this a few months after you posted your video that it finds you in a much happier place. Until a few years ago I had lived a charmed life. Without getting overly personal, at some point things changed and I've gone through all sorts of hell over the last few years, things unimaginable to me just a few years ago - such as mental health issues. I have had to learn to be kind to myself, to understand that it is fine to put the brakes on things for a while if needed, and amongst other things that languages will still be there to be tackled whenever I feel like doing so again. It is highly impactful to see you draw similar conclusions in such an emotionally open and honest way, and I commend you for that, I really do. Best wishes, Tom

May you be blessed with rest and the strength that it takes to be silent, which is its own language - something I am learning too - so I feel it for you as a blessing in a very real way. I heard the Phrase today “I have tuned my harp for sorrow” which I think is based in the bible from a people in exile which is how so many of us feel these days. But it hit me, if we can tune our harp for sorrow, we can tune it for joy too, but that takes time, it takes the language of silence out of which we can re-engage with others when that time is right - in a deeper and fulfilled way. May you be blessed with all these things, dear one.

Wow Lindie, thank you for sharing this video and for being so honest about your language learning journey. I am so glad I came across your channel when I started to learn Korean about one and a half years ago. One of the reasons I love your channel so much is not (only) because of the fact you speak so many languages and share a lot of useful tips about studying but its because I like the way you talk about language learning itself. You have always been authentic, realistic and passionate about the language learning process. Sometimes learning a language can be frustrating and exhausting. It really is a commitment. But you still find joy in all of that. You made me realize that language learning can be much more than just some skill that one acquires. Its a hobby and a lifestyle and it can change you... at least to some degree. I started learning Korean during the first lockdown and I don't know how I would have survived the pandemic so far without it. I was goal oriented and hard on myself back then and whatever I did had to be "useful" but with learning Korean I realized how toxic that mindset really is. Not just for language learning but in general. Your videos really encouraged me to keep studying but even more so to work on myself; to walk in my own pace and on my own path; to celebrate the little wins and to not give up when things get hard. I just want you to know that you have a real impact on something that became such an important part of my life now. I hope in 9 years I can say that I have been studying Korean for over a decade and I hope that I can do so with passion in my heart and a smile on my face. You make it seem like this is possible. So whatever you have to do to keep your languages enjoyable for you, do it! Faster, higher, further ... You don't owe that to anyone. Not to your past self and certainly not to your viewers. Your mental health will always be more important. So going easy on yourself, taking breaks and not setting (high) goals sounds like a pretty good goal to me. :) I send you lots of love from Germany.

I hear you, Lindie. The current society expects us to always perform and it considers rest/sleep overrated. We're also getting exposed to much more information than our brains can handle at a time. When we feel burned out like that, we tend to just wash it away ("I'm a strong man/woman, I can take this") rather than giving ourselves the needed rest or focusing on the things that really matter and are dear to us. Thanks for opening up like this, it just makes you even more authentic and relatable.

Fantastic video, Lindie. Taking breaks/resting/letting up on the gas needs to be normalised. It's healthy, it's necessary, and shouldn't have negative connotations associated with it. Thanks for being yourself and sharing these parts with the world.

Thank you so much for this video. I've only watched a few of your videos, but as a Christian who also loves learning languages, it's really encouraging to see someone be willing to share the need to rest, despite doing what she loves. I'm working a lot on Spanish right now, but haven't set specific goals. Figuring out work/rest balance has been a challenge for me ever since I started actively doing what I love (learning language). Hopefully we can both figure it out this year!

For some reason your mention of the passion part made me realise that I don't have to feel unproductive for learning Dutch or Armenian instead of improving on my more "useful" languages French and Spanish. I do it because it's fun and it brings me joy. Thank you so much for your honesty, a lot of people can relate to this and really appreciate this very real side of RU-vid that you just added to ♡ Best wishes from Germany

I haven`t commented before on your videos, but I do like your content very much, because I love languages too. Your videos have truly been an inspiration. I`m glad you are so excited about Hungarian. I had a Hungarian course a long time ago - very difficult language. I am in awe of how fast you have been able to make progress on learning this language. Thank you also for sharing your feelings about a difficult moment in your life. It`s very relatable. I started learning biblical Hebrew this year and was very motivated for about 6 months, but have seriously been struggling for the past couple of months due to health issues and fatigue. I guess sometimes you just need to allow some time for resting and finding real lasting solutions for whatever life throws at you. And languages are always there for you to return to when you`re feeling better. :) I wish you a peaceful end of this year and all kinds of hopeful and wonderful experiences in 2022! :)

Oh man. I empathise so much with this. I am not an avid watcher of your channel but I have seen some of your videos and I have a general impression of you being a clever, hard-working, ambitious person who obviously loves languages. One's ambition and strong work ethic often works against them and in today's society where we are constantly told that we need to be more productive, make more money, become better looking, and generally do MORE shit, our brain can often get overwhelmed with all the pressures that such obligations bring. You making this video helps society by normalising mental health issues and it helps people like me who also struggle so we are reminded that we are not alone. (I hope my comment reminds anyone reading of this as well.) This goes doubly so for me because I have watched your videos in the past and I felt some self-criticism at not being able to keep up my language learning habits in the past, but if you also share the feelings of not doing enough, then that offers some solace.

I watch your videos because I find the way you speak very calming. While I admire your language talents, I can see that there’s much more to you than language learning. I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself. Language learning is a challenge and it can lead to exhaustion. Also, there’s this toxicity in the world of being productive and monetizing everything. Life is about much more than that. While many people need motivation to do things, others need to slow down and enjoy the ride. I can definitely relate to this feeling of pushing myself way too hard and a friend of mine told me “slow down, you’re always going 200 miles per hour”. In these last few weeks I’ve slowed down on my learning goals (languages and other topics) because it was getting to a point where I had a hard time sleeping thinking of the next day’s goals. That’s when you know something is out of place. The goal, I remind myself, is life-long learning. And in order to maintain a habit thoroughout life it’s important that I enjoy it and rest. I hope you keep finding peace and the loneliness doesn’t get too overwhelming. If you ever want to talk, feel free to send me a message 🤗

Love you so much for this video, Lindie!!! We all deserve rest and patience and self-kindness. Something that helps me find peace in this chaotic world is embracing a slow living mindset as well as the concept of wu wei (the Taoist idea of not forcing). Anything we can do to accept ourselves more as we are and avoid falling into the trap of pushing ourselves constantly & unnecessarily is very powerful ❤️

Thanks for talking about this. I am starting to see and love on working smarter and not too hard. To be honest that saying bugged me a lot as someone who gets too focused on work hustle to the point it exhausted my body & mind. Now that I have a job in my field at last I am getting over my burnout phase and learning more what to do to give myself some rest for myself & it affected on my language learning journey as well. Helps having a brother going for a Psychology Major to help you out with some of this. God give you His rest and strength Lindsey as you overcome your burnout. God is there with you all the way. This year & last definitely God wanted me to take things easy & look out for my health because the work hustle really neglected it for me. Thank you for sharing its great to know that we’re not alone in this.

Thank you for being vulnerable with us. Wow. You are so strong. I think a lot of us are going through what exactly you've expressed in this video. The burnout is real and we're surround by this hustle culture that epitomizes sacrificing everything for profit, even yourself. Some proponents of hustle culture even place the blame on the individuals for the failures of modern society as though if we would have hustled more, then we'd be able to afford healthcare or a place to live or food. This says nothing of the corporate burnout that a lot of us feel when expectations for production continue to rise and stress along with it. In reality this is opposite of what we all, collectively, need right now. Rest is the answer. We are all worthy. We are all living human beings deserving of love and friendship. I'm happy and proud that you are getting help. Thank you again for your beautiful words. Sending love from Philadelphia.

I love your content and you are a great motivator, however I am happy to hear you are getting the help you need in this moment. I’m an American living in China for the last 4 years and I haven’t seen my family either and for whatever reason this holiday season has been rougher than the rest. Take your time, study when you want, how you want, what you want, upload what you want, the people who like yo and your content will still be here later. Being far from home can be extremely lonely, especially during the pandemic. Get out of the house more, even if just for a walk listening to your favorite podcasts. Thanks for your honesty finally break the stigma! I know it’s not about disability in general, but it gives me a huge relief that I don’t have to push myself too hard. I have complex disabilities deaf blindness and learning disabilities with other physical conditions, not to mention mental health issues. But society keeps telling me I’m not pushing myself hard enough, I’m not making efforts enough, even though I spent half of years in hospital bed, ER and OR. I was exhausted but I did it anyway, even in the ER, I was prepared my final exam:( I’m really happy for your understanding of yourself and accepting your limitations. I’m really happy for you! I know it takes huge courage to accept it in-front of strangers and I genuinely believe it helps a lot of people in the community. 한 해 동안 수고 많으셨어요!

Thank you for making such a candid and honest video and sharing your experience with all of this!! I definitely agree that the world seems to prioritize and praise hustle culture and maximum productivity and monetization of hobbies and I really feel like the past few years have really pushed so many more people towards burnout since we need MORE rest and compassion right now. I've definitely felt so many of the things you talked about in this video with burnout and especially with feeling pressure to share progress online, making goals or even studying a language things that burns us out instead of what motivates or excites us. I really hope your approach to language learning brings you some freedom this year and that everything in general starts feeling a little easier soon. I know it's not the same as having someone there to combat the loneliness, but I'm always a few messages away if you need a friend :)

I stumbled across one of your videos - the one where you're speaking Hungarian after not speaking it for 2 years. I also learnt it many years ago and for some reason; I stopped. But now I'm just getting back into it and I'm glad I'm found your channel. Totally understand with where you're coming from regarding work ethic and how people are praised based on the amount of how busy they are. You should never feel pressured into making videos and try not to give yourself a hard time. From what I can see from your content, you work extremely hard and you deserve a break and don't feel guilty. I think we live in society in which is constantly on the move and your level of success is calculated by how busy you are. We're only able to manage a certain amount of data when we start to burn out and rest is just as important as work. Anyway, enjoy your respite and don't feel guilty. Enjoy.

what I was looking for: study inspo, pretty notes, a way to feel productive without actually doing anything what I got: exactly what I needed to hear seriously, exactly what you said in this video about taking breaks and not putting too much pressure on yourself is exactly what my therapist told me a few weeks ago. Ive decided my 2022 is going to be a year of rest, of giving up, and of going with the flow.

I don't study anywhere near as much as you, and my languages are few and weak, but I also burn out on quite a regular basis. It's important to recuperate periodically. You're on the right track. Sometimes I see your videos, and they inspire me (I can see how much you do, so I want to, too), and they intimidate me (because man, you learn a lot!), and I simultaneously wonder how it is you don't burn out like.... every two weeks :D
