Oh my god a person who works 10-7! Finally a video featuring someone with the same mentally draining work schedule who doesn't have 24 hours a day to dedicate to language learning. This is honestly so refreshing because by the time I punch out, cook dinner, exercise, and do the dishes, it's 9PM, I'm mentally and physically drained from the day, and I get a good 1-2 hours of Korean study *barely*. I always feel so behind comparing myself to people with a lot more structurable time.. I am really trying to maximize my time this year and keep my big study binges for weekends when I have the extra energy to spare.

The biggest thing I've learned from making yearly goals is that goals can change drastically over the course of a year haha. So even though every year I technically "fail" to achieve 100% of my goals, I still enjoy setting yearly goals because it's also really interesting to look back on what your past self really wanted to achieve. For the sake of actually achieving goals, though, I agree that setting goals in shorter periods is much more attainable.
@asootspriteart

I'm still a newbie language learner compared to you and still finding my feet with it, so I was really relieved to hear you say about habits over goals. I feel like so many polyglots push having a concrete goal and I've just never really jibed with that. My end goal is complete fluency, but I'd rather enjoy the journey to get there than beat myself up for not reaching X goal in however many months and make myself feel like a failure if I don't get there. I don't see how that's supposed to be encouraging, I'd rather feel like I'm chipping away at it through daily habits and keep my passion alive.

the whole habits over goals is such a great mindset! I noticed it myself as well, I had much smaller goals than u. But I found it hard to stick to it when it's a goal - smth so far off in the future "read a whole book in German", and things were working out much nicer when I had enough time and energy for reading a few pages twice a week. I had a much better feeling about the whole thing even thought I wasnt moving along faster with the book. also your point about time not equaling mental energy. thats so true, ive been working from home since march and i feel like i get done less than i would have last year around this time. even tho i finish work at 6-7 (much later than i would at the office), i dont have energy to sit down to do a german lesson/read. the only thing that i kept is watching tv shows in german on netflix (at least smth)

As I’m a beginner learning just Japanese at the moment, I’m focusing on very small time frames e.g. a week, a month and at most 3 months for my language learning goals and because I’m using memrise I’m able to make very tangible goals like I want to finish each of the courses. I don’t know how it will change as I become more advanced and I finish all of the memrise courses but I’m excited to see where it goes.

Also Dictionary of basic japanese grammar is great for grammar studies. And for improving the language you can watch a lot of videos on ytb, watch japanese series (you can watch anime, but anime Japanese is kinda different from the real Japanese) and listen to podcast.

Congratulations on your boyfriend! I rang in 2020 with my wife's family in South Korea, and decided to make learning Korean a focus this year. I was anticipating a grand 2020 as an "annus mirabilis." You're right: the pandemic messed with everybody's plans. Working from home drained energy from language studies. I ended up spending more time (re-)learning Spanish than studying Korean. Other hobbies (Toastmasters, bicycling) took time away from language studies. Etc., etc. Thank you for the lessons. I will apply them to my language studies, and life.

In regards to your teacher over correcting you, that immediately made me think of my driving instructor. I'm finally getting around to learning and when I drive with my dad it's mostly enjoyable and I'm pretty confident driving around town with him. But when I got around to doing proper lessons the instructor would call out every single last mistake, not matter how minor, and it honestly made me not wanna drive for a little bit. I was coming out of the classes feeling like I couldn't actually drive well when just the day before I was driving all over the city with my dad and feeling entirely at ease and confident.

Love your content as always. As for myself, I'm starting to slowly dig out the parasite that I call doubt from my body and I actively started to speak more Russian with my wife. I'm very much self-deprecating but I decided to change it for the better. Heck, I'm even considering doing a review series for different Russian RU-vid educators on what kind of content, resources, and experience they offer. Something else that helped me was writing down what I achieved in regards to language learning and looked at my progress daily. It was somewhat like game, like "leveling up" if I had to use a phrase for it. So, that's my comment. Happy language learning to all, and stay safe!

Finding a good teacher online is so difficult! On italki, I usually enjoy classes with community tutors rather than the "professional" teachers. Most of my teachers have focused strictly on grammar and either teach material that's too difficult or too easy even after I have communicated my needs. I've learned that I prefer to study alone or in meaningful interactions with native speakers that adjust to my level.

Good luck with Tagalog and Hungarian (etc) in 2021 😁 I don't expect anyone to read the below but it was helpful to think about it & review, so thanks Lindie! - - - - For me in 2020 I learnt more business Japanese from work and got more advanced at reading, typing and listening (I highly recommend " シノブとナルミの毒舌アメリカンライフ" which a chat podcast by 2 funny Japanese women living in Texas), but my spoken Japanese level (because I haven't done much) plummeted :( Also I didn't do any Mandarin until October/November which was lazy. For 2021, at least the first half while still at home because of restrictions, I aim to go from zero to become comfortable at basic Spanish conversation, and get back into the swing of Mandarin! And keep French and Japanese on maintenance 😁 Good luck everyone!

I'm brazilian and I've been studying english since 2nd grade (I'm in 8th grade now hehe) and it's so good to say that I understood everything you just said without any subtitles and the fact that I'm only 13yo! I think I always had interesting in learning languages but I am just discovering it now! Hahaha 😂 Speaking portuguese and English and also learning korean (that I really hope I can speak fluently someday) has been something that I know will impact my future and change it completely, and you are a person who motivates me! Knowing all those hard languages, it makes me happy, 'cause I know it's not impossible, so thank you!

I loved this video so much! I really agree with the input from friends, as this year I have finally started learning a couple languages with one of my friends, allowing me to more quickly learn. Also, I am currently planning out my next year, and was wondering if you could show how you plan out everything. This quadrant system sounds interesting. No pressure, I understand that if you don't want to make a video on it, you don't have to. Love you!

My language learning has really been a mess this whole year. I already struggle with depression, anxiety, self-doubt (sometimes even self-loathing and self-hatred if I'm completely honest) and loneliness in the best of times, so this year has been an absolutely shitshow piled on top of all those issues. I've had a lot of struggle with finding the motivation and energy to do *anything* productive, even things I like, such as learning languages. There have been weeks when I just didn't do anything active and often delayed even passive maintenance stuff like watching RU-vid videos in target languages. Then it gets better for a few days before I feel once again like I don't have the energy for it. As an example, I had thought of focusing entirely on Spanish in August, keeping other languages on the maintenance backburner, I planned to study from the ASSIMIL Spanish in practice book (B2->C1), consuming news broadcasts and articles solely in Spanish, watch RU-vid almost exclusively in Spanish (i.e. set RU-vid to Spanish and watch mainly Spanish language content), read books in Spanish, etc. That lasted maybe a week where I did it consistently before it all crashed down and I spent the rest of the month trying to get back on track with it, but it never lasted more than a day or two at best. SPent the rest of the time feeling guilty about it. I also tried to get back into Portuguese, which I started learning a whole three times now, yet always quit fairly quickly for various reasons (getting a job and no longer having the time, getting another depressive episode,...). I got motivated by Nathaniel Drew's video about his studies of Portuguese, and with my Spanish knowledge I really understood a lot more then I did previously, so I thought it would be easier. I started doing it and it lasted maybe a week if that. Starting to wonder if I should get a different course to study with as I am starting to consider maybe the coursebook isn't right for me. Also starting considering yielding and just do Brazilian Portuguese instead of the European Portuguese I have so far focused on exclusively. Or that maybe Portuguese just isn't for me and I should give up trying to learn it. Finally, with Greek, I just don't really know what I want to do. My motivation for learning it is religious, I am a Hellenic polytheist and want to be able to converse with fellow practitioners from Greece in their native language, I feel like having a grasp of the modern language will help me get closer to the Gods by learning the language of the culture that worshipped Them long ago, I really want to learn it to an advanced level. But I don't really know how to translate that motivation into practical goals to work towards. Ever since I finished my ASSIMIL course I have been kind of directionless. I'm mucking about by watching RU-vid videos in the languages, cooking videos, Masterchef Greece, news, etc., but it's mostly maintenance. I harvest new words from various sources, though mainly Easy Greek videos. But I feel like I have reached the dreaded Intermediate Plateau and just don't know how I can proceed to overcome this plateau. Or, I have thought of a few things I can try, but still have to actually find the energy to do them. So that's where I am at, and I am not really happy with it.

Hey! Just saw your comment and wanted to leave some nice words. I am in sort of a similar position, this year has been really bad for me too (lost my apartment, death in the family etc.) and I haven't reached many of my language goals as well. You are not alone! I hope things are looking better for you soon! PS: I hope it's okay for me to say but it's cool to meet another Hellenic polytheist! A good friend of mine is one as well!

Yes bro, this year was a complete mess. But things could have been even worse. Don't you worry, you at least tried to learn something. Sometimes we set big goals, be flexible with your goals, it's okay them not be completed.

Sort of same for me. I used to love making plans, and never stuck to them. But I made a new sort of "plan" this year in July. Somewhere I read you overestimate what you can achieve in one year and underestimate what you can do in five years. So I made a plan for ten years and eleven languages. I estimated how many hours I'd need to reach the level I'd like to have in 2030, and then I divided the sum by 3650 (365 days in a year x 10). The result is that if I'm studying one hour and 45 minutes per day (on average, but no matter which language) I'll reach my goal. This plan is still motivating me now, five months later :D And yes, people do play a very important role in language learning, I'm very thankful to my Slovak language partner!

Ah it would be so awesome if we could do Indonesian-Korean exchange since I want to focus more on my Korean this year and take TOPIK until Level 3-4! I'm also currently learning Tagalog, it would be awesome if we could link up 🥺 Thanks again for the amazing video ❤️

I totally agree!at the beginning of thid year I read rhe book "atomic habits" by James Clear and IT CHANGED ME! No literally. I am so much more focused on maintaining habits than thriving for goals. By maintaining a habit you automatically will reach your goals without the worry of not keeping up. Also, i wanted to thank you for this nice insight and for all the work you're doing! It really helps me! 😊

This was a very complicated year to me. I got in college in another country and couldn'd travel cause the corona virus. Laguage-wise I feel like I did a lot but i could have done more you know, but Im not mad at all. Felt great progress in Korean, my interest for spanish grew and I learnt a lot from watching spanish shows on netflix. Also started Japanese but kinda let loose cause my classes had begun and I lost focus. French has always been a pain in the ass I might say haha it's not my favorite language and there's so much that you have to know. Looking foward to 2021.

Reading the comments im glad to know im not the only one that got burned out by the pandemic which slowed down my language learning. I did a few lessons of Swedish and German on Italki and I figured that I actually don't learn best with a teacher I prefer teaching myself with textbooks and then immersion so now I am learning from textbooks and surrounding myself by watching various shows such as old Disney shows/movies but with Swedish or German audio or some netlfix shows. I also learnt that I need to set a schedule for myself but one thats flexible because vague goals do not work for me at all🤕🤕 I also bought new intermediate textbooks for Korean and I hope in 2021 I can finally learn some new grammar and improve my speaking a lot as I either keep getting bored of cramming grammar from online resources. Watching k dramas throughout this year has helped me retain the language though! Hopefully next year I got to B2/C2 Korean, B2 for Swedish and German 🤗 i am writing my university dissertation at the same time so I will give myself some props for staying motivated 💪🏽

I also did't have any plan to learn a new language at the start of 2020. But then the pandemic happens and my college is closed. During this time, I started watching Chinese dramas and listening to Chinese songs a lot and fell in love with this language. And now here I am, learning Chinese and being happy about it.❤️

This year has been pretty unpredictable. I have done a lot of online Vietnamese lessons focusing a lot on culture, history, and some famous children’s stories. I really started to feel a little more confident with my listening abilities in Cantonese, but I still have a long way to go. I feel like I spent more of my free time trying to improve Mandarin than I have in several years. I’m getting more and more to wear I can understand it while I’m doing other things like English.

On the beginning of 2020 I started learning Japanese but it was too big challenge form me now, so I started learning Korean about month ago and I still have a motivation. I always had wanted big results after short period of time so I started changing my mindset and telling myself that language learning take a lot of time and it’s a process. Thank you for your videos, those really help me stay motivated and keep going hah. Btw. Sorry for all my mistakes in this “message”, English is my second language and I’m still a Lerner 😅

I think it's so important to emphasize that time does not equal mental energy. I used to say 'once I finish X' or 'once X period is over I'll finally have time to buckle down and learn this language' when in reality, I just wanted to relax and do nothing. AND THAT IS OKAY. Letting go of this idea that we MUST use our free time on languages can just add toxic pressure to what should be a fun process. Don't study if you're not feeling it, period. Your input will suffer and you'll lose motivation quickly.

I'm a native speaker of tagalog and from the snippet of your study notebook i can say that the words are right and all but that's just not how we talk everyday. It is quite formal. Edit: It is how we compose a sentence or a paragraph in school. I can definitely say that tagalog writing and speaking is very different.
