@@TheNewbys You've put the demands on yourself. Only you can remove them and lighten your own load. I've noticed a trend with RU-vid producers and I've concluded that people that consider themselves RU-vid producers for a living are not in a good space. They become a slave to "content" and do exactly what other producers are doing.... they start acting the same, even mimicking other content creators in a way that's rather creepy actually. There's nothing natural about filming and editing your life for the world to see essentially a false perception of who you truly are. You have to curb your words in order to not get demonetized and you feel like you have to constantly impress to stay relevant. It's sad really because it's not natural for you or your children. It's acting and acting isn't real life. It's an illusion of grandeur. I heard one content creator be absolutely honest when he said "dance monkey dance!" Ever since I heard this my entire perspective changed. I've had many family members and friends ask me to start a RU-vid channel because of all the projects I've got my hands in but I remember that this is my life to live and that life is too short to be someone's dancing monkey. Take care of your children and protect them. That's your greatest and most important job. RU-vid isn't worth it if changes you. I've not seen one person in here that hasn't been sucked into the illusion. I wish your family all the best. ❤

Newbys , I would be happy watching a video every two weeks from you , I really would . If it means that you get a bit more time together as a family , we as a community would understand, I'm sure ! Your babies are tiny and demand a lot of your time and attention and they take priority for now . But I love seeing your progress on the farm and a peek into life in Portugal so I would hate to see you go❤ much love from Qatar

Good thing about going 2 to 1 video is also being able to build a bit of a backlog. Have something to post when the time is tight. Skip a few weeks here and there. Prioritize mental health over YT.

Agreed! I love see the progress and changes on the farm. Even a quick video showing the progress and a voice over. Or take a break for a week and take vacation. Recharge your batteries. I enjoy your channel and would be sad to see it go totally. I follow a handful of YT channels - and lots of them take breaks. Give yourself a break as needed. Lot of love coming your way from Nova Scotia. :)

Dear Tara and John - 30 years ago we left the UK for Canada - leaving my family behind, taking my parents’ only Grandchild away - the guilt was overwhelming - took me over 10 years to battle with homesickness BUT you know what got me through - a wonderful husband, a very strong marriage and the knowledge that our son was growing up in a Country 🇨🇦 that was absolutely beautiful in every single way. You two (four) have all those things too. BE BRAVE, THINK BIG AND EXPLORE ❤. Enjoy your well deserved break and we will look forward to seeing you soon much love 💕🇨🇦

Don’t worry Guys, if you can only manage 2 videos a month, that is ok. Better 2 good videos feeling relatively less stressed. It’s hard raising 2 little ones plus renovating and keeping up a farm, never mind filming and editing. Something has to give. Also, people are human, it isn’t possible to be bubbly and upbeat all the time, especially sleep deprived! ❤️ Enjoy your well-earned break 😊

Yours is by far the best RU-vid channel I watch because you are such a “real” family. It is much easier to fix a problem when you know what is wrong and a positive mental attitude gets you over the hurdles. When you are “out of sorts” and can’t really put your finger on what is wrong, it is much harder to fix. Listen to your gut, take a holiday, leave the camera at home or limit filming to very short bursts and come back refreshed. We are not going anywhere ❤️.

so many are feeling burnt out lately including myself, you are not alone, and don't feel pressure for having to keep pushing out videos so often, perhaps put some projects on the back burner and go down to 1 video a week for a while or even just 1 a month, so you can recharge and take time out for you as a family, we will all still be here whatever you decide to do, hugs x

I admire your honesty. I'm 70 years old and I've been where you are. Two toddlers and a huge garden to tend is an overwhelming task. Make less videos and do take more breaks and travel at least twice a year. We will enjoy those with you as well. Thank you for sharing your feelings with us and allowing us to be a part of your journey. The boys will be grown and off before you know it. Don't be too hard on yourselves. You are doing fabulously. Hello Newbys! I think it is important to remember that RU-vid is your job. A job that makes your everyday activities extra hard because cameras must be set up, things must be explained, and videos must be edited. Everyone needs time away from their job, so it's good that you will be taking a break. Thank you for your hard work! Also, don't forget that homeschooling is an option. Plenty of RU-vidrs travel, farm, and homeschool. :)

I would like to echo this comment. I'm a grandparent now, but I cannot imagine how difficult it would have been to film and share my life with strangers, when my children were little (- I ran a tour guiding business from my home). Youtubing, the way you are doing it, criss-crosses your private and work life all day long. It seems to me, you have not much time off during your week. And then you have to read all this feedback - it blows my mind. I think it's all too much. Yes, for the immediate - enjoy a break! You deserve it. I hope your neighbours and community will look after the farm, at least the essentials while you are away. Some of that gorgeous produce will need to be harvested soon. When you return, why not consider going down to once per week. And here's another thought: have you considered organising a string of travelling volunteers to assist with the myriad of jobs around the place. Have a great trip and all the best to all four of you - you will come through this low patch. Take care 💚

Dear John and Tara, all of us have bad times but very few of us have to justify those to thousands of strangers, albeit mostly supportive ones. Take time out from the outside world and recuperate the love of building your home. We did this 30 year ago in Spain but not on YT. We are still here, welcoming our grandchildren into the farm life we’ve built.

You two are one of the most honest, decent and hard working couple I've ever seen on RU-vid. I'm in awe of what you've achieved in just ONE YEAR. Of course you're going to feel overwhelmed, you've had so much change in such a short time. John, I honestly don't think this community would mind if you didn't film so much of your handywork. Just absorb yourself in your project and film when you're able. The end result will, as always, be amazing. Tara, you're a mother of 2 little ones and that in itself is a full time job. The fact that you manage to get so many other projects completed is astonishing. Cuddle your babies, take them travelling and enjoy them while they're so small. You're so right in saying that there will come a time when those tiny toys won't be scattered around the farm. This is long and I know how busy you both are so, in short, live in the moment, take time out and look after yourselves.xx

Perhaps having a caretaker that lives on your property, caring for it in your absence and doing chores to help out when you are there might be an option. We have a caretaker at our ranch, it helps us care for two properties. Farming and ranching is a full time job and it never lets up, just as having our babies that need us 24-7. As you have shared, life is about the process not just the finished product. Love to you all.

Asking for help is hard, but a little more help in Portugal will be easy to find and absolutely perfect for people like you with such a dynamic work ethic. I realise that youtube is very important for this stage of your lives. Maybe if you take the time for travel as you said. Please take time to enjoy the travel with the boys. But at the end of the day, you both are in charge of your life and that of your precious children. On top of all that you do, you make your YT family laugh and cry. Aww, Newby's! My heart just melted with empathy. I know from growing an online business myself that breaks and building it in a way that is sustainable is crucial. I hear you when you say that these times are precious with your children, and that the time to travel is now if done during during school months. I'm sure everyone would be just as happy if it was one video per week. Sometimes the format of the video can also make a difference. I really like seeing your sped up building segments, and just seeing a flower, a chicken, random moments on the homestead. Make it easier on yourselves, we'll be just as interested in your content. Sending you so much love and warm hugs. You should have time enjoying your lawn, and soon, your new outdoor kitchen. Once per week vlog that is a bit longer, instead of two... might be the compromise you're looking for. The Lord made a day for rest ...and sometimes we need a few weeks per year too. Breath deep, decide what is vital and carry on with ease and joy ....because you want to ...not because you have to. There are plenty of 'have tos' in life ...posting on youtube twice per week is not one of them. Tara, keep a journal ...I suspect that when the children get older, you'll have time to put together some "Mommy" books or books for children with your special art ...maybe even films of your children adventure books (?) With your popularity on youtube I have no doubt you would become a successful publisher. All your thoughts about travel, and the people of the world, the plants & animals as well. Life is more than just youtube!

Tara & John, you are AMAZING! You have done soooo much on the farm in this last year. It is absolutely incredible the transformation. I know the energy it takes to do this AND enriching you boys as well as the time & energy to film & produce videos (an enormous task). We ALL hit the wall from time to time! Take a Hiatus from the farm and go do something fun! EXLORE & BE BRAVE even if that means doing only one short video a week or less. GO do whatever makes you Joyful. We love you❤

Thank you so much for sharing your life with us through your amazing videos. As a newbie to TheNewbys community, ❤ I agree with a number of my fellow subscribers- take a break and enjoy your time with your little ones. And maybe one vlog a week. When I had my first child 45 years ago, my mother gave me a china mug with this poem - “Cleaning and Scrubbing can wait till tomorrow. For babies grow up. We learn to our sorrow. So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep. I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.” Take care. Hugs. 💕💕💕💕🇨🇦

I had a similar problem with the grass growing all over. A friend suggested a simple trick. Mark your garden area, lay simple cardboard over it, if you have landscape fabric you can put it over or just add some wood chips over the cardboard, will save you a lot of work from removing all those weeds plus the area will retain moisture longer. hope it helps !

Luckily for you guys, Portugal has some beautiful beaches/cities to explore. The diverse landscape from where you all live to the coasts, the islands, or the rolling landscapes of Alentejo might be enough to rejuvenate your spirit. Burn out happens to all of us. I echo what everyone else has been saying, everyone needs some time off to relax and you two are both no different. You have achieved so much in the short time you have had the farm, plus caring for two littles ones. It's good to take stock and just be. Little ones grow up so fast, enjoy them while as they grow, as you can't turn the clock back. Let me first say I absolutely love your channel BECAUSE you are REAL. You include the good, bad, and ugly, which is relatable. Before you had 2 children you both traveled all over the world. It has to be quite the adjustment to have 2 children and buy a farm. A holiday with a change of scenery just might be the ticket to recharge your spirits. Second, as for your weeds Tara, have you thought about weed cloth? It's a bit late in the game this year, but next year put it down to eliminate the majority of the weeds. You can also put a cover over the area where you want your oats (over winter) to try to reduce those plants taking over. Sorry this is such a LONG comment. With much love being sent from sunny Florida 🥰❤🙏

If you can hire neighbors to take charge of different sections and someone to tend to the chickens, then steal away for ten days. No cameras. Just you four. BE with each other. Refresh. ❤❤ You have no idea the depth of what you are modeling in family life, just by being you. So take a family break, nothing exotic, maybe another part of Portugal. Make it easy on you all. Then come back. We will be here. Much, much ❤️ 😍 💖 ❣️

Dear Newby family, I believe your relationship with each other is co-equal to the one with your children. As parents we would do anything for our children, even sacrifice our lives if necessary. In the old days extended family lived in villages or lived near by ....and helped each other with the chores and everyday needs ...especially when the children were/are little. No wonder so many couples get burnt out & babysitters alone don't cut it. Parents need their moments when they can snatch from busy schedules to be alone together (which is almost impossible with a nursing baby) ...but is doable even for little 'date nights' when one has either family or close friends who can fill in. (Also) Many people around the world live in 'intentional communities' & most don't succeed or work well unless they are centered around core values or religion like the Amish ...or family & farming like the Kibbutz farms in Israel ...The point is they are all pulling together for mutual goals. I think you Newbys may benefit by gradually developing a physical (3d) community (not just the on-line community) ...multi-skilled people or just willing-helpful hands on the farm that come for occasional weekly-monthly ...or just weekend or day -visits that they pay for themselves, but either teach or learn about farming by DOING like they do at 'Camphill' or 'Waldorf' or 'Bio-dynamic' farms across Europe and the world. If one day (after you have built your own home) you-all think this might be a viable option then you could build not-so tiny homes with several bedrooms & a community kitchen and a couple of bathrooms for visiting teachers or "scholars of the soil". I believe Camphill, Waldorf Bio-dynamic and other kinds of farms thrive & almost couldn't function without these short-term visiting helpers. The houses could be far enough from the main house to ensure privacy and safety (vetting the people somehow beforehand). This way the farm would almost run itself ...& eventually (maybe sooner than latter) you could hire a skilled & experienced farm-manager that co-manages the farm with the Newby-management (with your ultimate say-so). Perhaps this could be something that evolves over time ...& maybe not until the boys have grown a little, or even when they're already teenagers & could help run the farm & manage people themselves. Safety first always. And again maybe this is not at all what you are aiming for or would ever consider. Anyway, I used to visit such farms when I lived in Minnesota, and also visited Camphill & Waldorf farms in next-door Wisconsin. There was so much produce at one Camphill I used to visit (only on weekends) that at the end of several hours (usually four-six hours) when a certain designated chore/task was finished like planting, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, etc ...we got to bring home a box of vegetables at the end of the day ...so my teen-aged daughter and I didn't even need housing. The farm benefited from our help ...but so did we! We LOVED getting away from the city & enjoying the farm & nature. Sometimes my daughter's Waldorf school rented a very large two-story cabin near the farm and would come help pick on produce day when they sold their vegetables by the box & delivered them. We'd also go canoeing down the nearby St. Croix River, as well as hike and learn about wildflowers & wild-edibles and honeybees & prairie preservation in the meadows. We went with the school or just as a family. In fact there was a hiking trail down to the St. Croix through deciduous and pine forest with gullies, hills and a large waterfall and stream where we went swimming. At the time they also took young people from many area schools horse-back riding through the meadows and forest. Like your property (except bigger) it was a kind of multi-faceted flora & fauna paradise with different kinds of terrain & purposes. With so many farms going under in America these kinds of farms are thriving. This particular one I used to go to most is called Community Homestead (,org) ...but there are many many others like these across America and Europe (especially Germany where Waldorf & Bio-dynamic farming got started). I am only sharing this info ...with no expectation whatsoever, except to share what is out there. I don't know if they ever read my comment (which wasn't as long) ...but I shared similar info with The Voyagers in Italy since they may be near these kinds of farms and benefit from ideas & farming-practices they may gather by visiting them. Warm greetings to you Newby family, and have a wonderful time away from the stress and work ...and breathe deeply the joy of your blessed life and appreciate all you have accomplished. Whether you stick w/ YT or not ...we have benefited and enjoyed the journey with you! ~Tara (Kindlydude's wife)

You haven't asked for advice but you welcome comments...as a mother of two and it's now 30+ years later I would remind you of how fortunate a life you are living now, have lived prior to Portugal and even your most recent experiences to Morocco, Italy and Zimbabwe in the last 6 months! (wow) Not many people have these opportunities. You are young, there is still plenty of time to do more travel in the years to come. The best education for your children never happens in a classroom (keep that in mind when you worry about pulling them out of school to experience a travel experience). You are not in some race to finish the farm projects so relax take your time and enjoy your family. It really does go by quickly. Suggestion: How about taking a day or two off and head to the nearest beach for some R&R or go and explore more of the region and area where you live. I'm sure there is plenty to discover. Make some new adventures happen close to home. You don't need to jump on a plane and fly far away to have fun and adventures. It doesn't have to be all about work projects on the farm. Balance is key. Side note: We have a beautiful garden/yard/home that stops people who walk by and we get asked many questions about it...Yes, it was a lot of work to get it to this point but I'm very clear, it took us 16 years and counting :) All the best to you Newbys family!

Gardening and farming are very hard! A lot of people will put down cardboard then add sterilized compost from bags. I think this would really be helpful for the areas in your food area where you have a ton of difficult weeds. Also for really big areas you could just cover with black thick plastic sheets . By putting it down for the entire summer you could kill weed seeds. It gets very hot, it’s worth a try. Also, any flowering plant that reseeds itself( perennial) is a blessing as well. Fruit trees, strawberries, orange trees, and cherry trees seem to be a good bet in Portugal. When I had a wood stove I used to dump the wood ashes in my garden spot. It really was remarkable how much food we got out of a little 20 foot by 20 foot spot. Tomatoes to can, zucchini by the hundreds, yellow crookneck, okra, and tons of cucumbers!

We watch your channel from Vancouver Island in Canada where we are renovating home and garden without toddlers, infants or filming pressures. We totally respect your need to post fewer videos and stay sane and balanced. More sleep would certinly help all of us. We have renovated with toddlers and have no idea how you can add filming to the mix - very impressive. We would love to see you make videos of exploring your local Portugese environs - the market, the football pitch, the lumber yard and vineyards and beaches would be interesting to see. We liked your shopping and olive oil pressing adventures. Gardening tips from your neighbours would be good too!

Hi there! Thank you for your latest video. I should think every person has & does feel that way. It's part of life! Wanting to be a free spirit, enjoying our children ( because yes, it goes so very quick, and then you want it back), but at the same time, you need to earn a living. Sometimes, also, most jobs become laborious and make you feel that little bit more trapped! I love having breaks, away from my job, home it keeps me going, gives me change. Even though i live in a beautiful place! If the time came that on my return, i didn't feel that love/comfort for home! And my lifestyle! than a change has to come! Maybe this is yours, possibly for the short term, until Crusoe starts school! Good luck. It has been a pleasure meeting you guys! Do what you have to! X

You really are a genuine joy to watch, and yes, it is your honesty and realism that makes your channel special. I had three children under five, and looking back now, the broken nights and tantrums are not what I remember. I remember being on a beach and being tapped on my shoulder by a helpful person who told me my baby was eating the sand … Actually it was soon spat out, and no harm was realised, I often look back on that and smile, she also made a good attempt at eating an African violet plant 😆 I smile at the funny things they said, words they invented and we still use, I smile at the fun and laughter, and that is continuing in their adulthood and through my beautiful grandsons. Anyway, the point is, when you are in that place of little people, 24/7, it can be so tiring it’s debilitating. You definitely need a holiday, so enjoy yourselves, and re think when you return. Whatever you choose to do, I’m sure your community will be with you. As always, look after yourselves, take care, sending you all very big hugs xx

I don't know if this is a possibility for you or if someone has already mentioned it. My father was told watermelon would not grow in his area. He covered a raised row with black plastic, which warmed the ground and helped keep the weeds down. It also kept the watermelon from sitting directly in the dirt. At the end of each season he pulls it up, rolls it up and reuses it the next year. He was able to sometimes, depending on the year get some pretty good size watermelons.

Love your honesty as much as I love your videos. As others have said maybe 2 videos a week is too much. I think we can all appreciate how hard you are working on the farm whilst raising two little boys, and us parents understand it’s not an easy job. Enjoy your break, have fun and hopefully a good rest as well. Even if you release 1 video a month I will be tuning in to enjoy your progress. Hugs 🤗

You both are so innovative and positive with your new surroundins-you take problems in your stride and know you'll find a solution! Your little boys are so precious and a hope for the future❤. What you are accomplishing is amazing-give yourselves some pats on your backs! The marigolds will benefit your plants and add happy colours! Great growing! CHEERS Sandy&Andy😊

Most of us are supporting you because we are watching your videos! Great job on those videos. I just found you guys! Here’s an idea: prop up your cameras as you work for some portion of your videos and do voice overs when you edit them! It doesn’t have to be for the whole video. It’ll take some pressure off as you work and enjoy your precious ones!! Happy videoing!!

Just wanted to say that if not for your content and beautifully warm family life, which, believe me, is becoming increasingly rare to witness, I would not have hope to succeed myself. I absolutely adore your innocent, casual, naturally curated life... it's like my therapy session...❤

Hi, about the grass. You could also choose to cover it a season (with cardboard or tarp) and plant in it next year after applying a big layer of compost to it. That would kill most grass underneath❤

You both have worked so hard to create a beautiful place for you and your family. When your in the midst of your projects it’s hard to see just how much you have accomplished. Pack your bags and hit the road, when you come home you will have fresh eyes and see all the wonderful things you have done!!! I guarantee you your farm will be more beautiful than ever!!! I could watch you guys everyday, but 1 video a week is enough!!!! Be good to yourself and remember we all love you guys!!! Safe travels ❤

For a couple who have travelled the world like you have it will always be hard to settle down in one place forever. Having made the choice to start a family and buy the farm will now be the centre of your thoughts and decisions. Just one of those is bad enough but with the farm needing so much work after years of neglect it has to drain you both at times. So, go ahead and enjoy your break.

Dear John and Tara...My friends, I wholeheartedly support you taking a break away and having some much needed rest. I have been in awe of your accomplishments and being able to build, weed, water, plant, clean, cook, care for yourselves and the kids, dig and dig, film, edit, shop, organize, budget, decorate, host visitors, plan, and keep your family safe. And doing all of this on poor sleep! And there is so much more we don't see behind the scenes too! It is a lot to do while putting out TWO vlogs a week. I would also support you if you decided to do only ONE a week in the future. I know it's your income, but I will bet that your weekly viewers will be maintained without much change in numbers overall..... I have long felt that perhaps your pace was just not sustainable in the long run, and that cutting back on vlogging and taking time to get away would be necessary for both of you. As my dear Mum used to say.. (And I hope this translates properly!)...." As jy jou liggaam ignoreer wanneer dit jou tekens gee, sal die goeie Here jou geen ander keuse gee as om op een of ander manier te rus nie ..."🌄🌹🐞🐝

You guys are doing so many different things all it was and the fact that you're willing to share it with us it's amazing I really pray that you choose to continue to attend RU-vid because you show people that strength is in the daily drive not in the final stretch and success and happiness comes from enjoying what's right in front of you so I feel like your channel conveys tasting and it would be sad for them to go away you guys are super parents and you're so kind and gentle and loving to your kids you included and all of these things the world needs to see Mora and you guys show it to that

All of your projects have been huge and you have never missed a beat as well as having Sawyer life is super busy and lack of sleep is the hardest part of raising young children give yourselves time to smell the roses 🌹 the most important thing is that you both realise burnout is real and you need to take time out. Maybe back to one video a week. Remember you and your health is the most important thing. Much love and respect to you both. ❤️❤️🇦🇺🇦🇺👍👍❤️❤️

8.00pm - guys my heart goes out to you all. Please, please take time out for yourselves. Enjoy your children and most importantly time for yourselves as husband and wife !!! So fundamentally important. I must admit I’m so envious at times watching the lifestyle you all live as it would be a dream come true for myself, on the flip side of that I am not envious of the many, many hours you both take to make your videos, which I would only imagine it can consume your whole lives from time to time. Take time, go off and rejuvenate your souls, enrich yourselves with whatever it takes to allow your cups to overflow once more. Your whole family are an inspiration to watch and the abundant lifestyle yous are creating is mesmerising. Much love from the north east of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ❤

Thats part of living, sometimes we get bored of things we do in a routine mode. When you travel, you miss your home, when yre home, you miss the travels. 😄We just need to break routine, thats the secret i think. Yre just a lovely family, and we wil be here to see your videos, no matter how long you take to publish. Love to you from Algarve- Portugal (sry for my english, im portuguese)

Love to see what you're up to each week but the time you have with the kids, these ages, the coming years are very important. Enjoy each moment. Maybe the community is happy with one video each week or every 2 weeks. Would it be an idea to place camera's on some key points at the quinta that record once you like it, remember key moments in date and time, not having to place around the equipment and be worries about recording takes the stress away. Just enjoy life, show the community some trips you enjoy in lovely Portugal and place your family at number one. You live in one of the most beautiful country's in europe, so take your time to enjoy the Douro region, many river beaches and the best foods and drinks the region has to offer. Changing the format doesn't mean losing many followers..
