I am a cybersecurity engineer and I love my job, there are plenty of cybersecurity roles that are as boring as crap and there are an equal number that are super interesting. There is a type of stress to be sure, but it's the same type of stress as playing a video game where you are fighting a boss and you are just trying to win. If you have the right role in cybersecurity the bad guys are that boss, and you're fighting them. If you are competent you have the advantage over them (even the APTs). Essentially working in cybersecurity is like a real life videogame. It's super fun.

Sorry to hear about your vision problems. Sounds like you were starting to get burn out, too. Knowing when to get out before it happens is far too often rare. Speaking from experience, having someone who shares and supports your interests is crucial to any long lasting relationship, otherwise it's just misery. (or at least is willing to share in it ,even if they don't understand it. They're just happy to be sharing what you love and being with you). Good luck to you. (To be honest I've kept checking every week for anything new on your channel since your last video).

About 5 years ago I got my first job in Infosec. 6 figures. Loved my coworkers, loved what I did. CISO was awesome. There were some roadblocks from other teams to my work and I really wanted to try more technical areas. But the worst part was the commute of 2 hours there and 2 hours back at times and no option for remote work. My neck started killing me and I started feeling burned out. I tried getting help from my CISO and HR to no avail. So although the money was awesome and I have yet to match it, I quit and took 4 months off to heal my neck with PT and learn more about other technical parts of Infosec. I came back to a job 30k lower than where I was. But honestly, my stress level was a ton less. Would I like to be making 6 figures again? You bet, but will I sacrifice my health again for it - no way.

There was many reasons: clients got broke, health issue, move to better country, language issues, etc. I had got in construction and was hoping that I got rid off all that IT worries. But eventually I quit from construction mess as it no less challenging and hurts all of your body in any aspect as well as mentally. What can I say now - I have got my IT appetite back and now sharpening my IT saw as diligently as never before. Hope you will do so soon )))

Good on you! I'm a sort of multi-purpose techie (electrical engineer, network engineer, biohacker etc) and there is definitely a sort of "divide" that can occur. This is even more emphasized when it comes to security. I'm not sure one's mate needs to be into the same sort of techie stuff, but they DO need to be supportive of whatever you've got going on, or at least not detracting. I'm not on instagram etc. but I can appreciate the way you are prioritizing things. You're doing well -- keep on keeping on!

I've seen the whole IT industry fall off in pay. I gave up since every IT job I was taking was paying terrible, no raises, and constant increased responsibilities. Applied for a position for a CCNA and they said the pay was $60k. My last job even constantly threatened us that we were going to be replaced by software. I have zero interest in going back to IT unless there are a lot of changes. But yeah, I'm a similar spot as I've had health issues that have kept me from working and my human interaction has been limited to doctors and nurses.... and it sucks. Anyways, that's awesome that you're going to start making videos again and that you're doing alright. Exited to see what you've got planned.
@caitlinV3

I'm with ya on the ever increasing responsibilities in IT. But there are definitely some industries that have the money to spend on good IT people to protect their business and clients. It's usually the ones that deal with clients (law for example) in the private sector.
@TheGameBench
@TheGameBench 4 года назад
@@caitlinV3 That's a good point. They expect a lot more, so they pay a lot more and they know the worth of having good IT people. Besides, it's been about four years since I've been working in the IT industry... which mind as well be 400 years.

Eh, define IT? You mean helpdesk, A++ stuff? "Hey i broke my workstation, fix it", or are you talking site harding(active directory SSL/TLS encrypt, site to site tunneling, MFA authentication for the office, bit lockers blah blah blah....local stuff pertaining to the local office)? I'm curious because there is a distinction between IT and engineering(devops, appdev, SRE, systems eng, and security). The latter...well...there has been no backslide in compensation in any of those fields. If anything compensation specifically in the Sec sector is quite adequate rivaling even those in higher end financial positions(150K+). Now a days $60k is about...I dunno, I'd say, high skill entry level employee? If that makes sense. ie, in the overall aspect of things, its kind of entry level, like your first phase of engineering. 2-4 years you'll be in the 80-100K+ salary, pretty easily as long as you work hard.
