What if you align your #CoffeeGrinder burrs with insane precision? Will time slow down? Does the Blessed Virgin appear in the grounds? Or is it just more #coffee pseudo-science and café gimmickry? Answers to these burning questions, and more, in today's edition of TWG, where I give #OCD its due.

Bienvenue mes enfants! I got the dial indicators and lapping plates going, and the burrs on the new Eureka Single Dose are now parallel to within a couple of microns. And what have I accomplished? You be the judge :)

I really enjoy your videos. Particularly the tutorial nature to them. You’re by far me favourite coffee RU-vid channel. I actually like the way you do these tutorials so much that I think you could do similar things in areas other then coffee. I haven’t found any other RU-vid channel that manages tutorials like you do. Keep it up!

Thank you! I had a problem where two sides of the burr were close, and two far away, so I couldn't align with a simple shim. Sanding first, and then shimming solved the problem.

Hugely support your endeavours. Did the same shimming customisation in line with your guidance for my chrono model - seems like it somehow contributed to the evenness of the particles distribution but mainly added a bit more calmness to my ocd. Looking forward to the funnel dripper comp so to have some inspiration for my moccamaster mods with v60

Hi, I used to own a Specialita which I alligned (with special thanks to your video:). I upgraded it to an Oro after watching your video where you mentioned all issues are fixed. Having it received and tested today, I confirm that this is the case. It is extremely silent with no vibration issues, no problems with the equipments supplied and producing a superior espresso to Specialita using my Bianca. Checking both of grinders in detail, I see a substantial difference in fine range. Using my hand just like you do, I find the points where burrs are touching. And from that, I check the setting where both grinders give me delicious espresso 18/38gr in 30 seconds with my favorite Natural Etiopian Boreta beans: In Specialita, difference between zero point and my espresso set point is less than a quarter turn, while with Oro it needed more than a half turn. Adding this on top of the fact that my Specialita burrs showed some strange patterns with marker which was not quite possible to fix (because burr was not completely flat within itself), I assume my Oro burrs should be in better condition from factory. Do you agree? And could you also kindly check how much of a turn is required in your case from zero point to espresso set point? Depending on your answer, I will check allignment with my new Oro and see if I can make it even better. Because I am a geek too, who will be able to sleep better after doing this:) Thanks again for the great informative videos you are shooting for us.
@wiredgourmet
@wiredgourmet Год назад
I would say that espresso is anywhere between 1/4 and 1/2 turn away from zero. The Oro has a larger diameter knob, meaning it will apply more torque when hunting for zero, and tighten it more with the same apparent force. So the diff makes sense.
@muratozt
@muratozt Год назад
@@wiredgourmetHi, I adjusted both upper and lower burrs and range has improved another quarter turn. Lower burrs were easy to fix just via tightening two of the screws but upper burr took me four hours to adjust because I had to place two double layer shims below one screw hole and two triple layer shims in one side between burr carriers. But I can sleep better now. Special thanks to you:) One experience I would like to share with you about the new Oro is as there are only two screws to hold the upper burr carrier, if you use more than three layers of shims, carrier bends and upper burr touches the below burr around the two screw holes. But using three layers between burr carriers is not a problem. Hope to see your new videos.

Thank you for this awesome coffee content! ☕ Next level burr alignment 👌 I don't have the guts to perform this procedure myself though haha. I'll stick with shimming for now lol. Looking forward to your tasting experience with this grinder. The burrs delivers tasty espresso from my experience and I still have to try it for filter brews. They could have put more effort on the quality of the single dosing mod components. Cheers!

Really nice job. I have the Eureka Single Dose. I think I will give it back. There is coffee going into the grinder itself and the blow doesn’t really work. And it’s horrible for filter coffee brews.

I was really looking forward to this grinder being on sale, it made me not buy a Niche or a Specialita or a Mahlkonig X54. then all the delays in launch caused concern, the reviews in the wild concur on the issues and it appears that Eureka have released a half baked machine. I expect there will be either a recall or a MK2 version addressing all the issues. Feels like the problems are much like the DF64 ones around the chute and declumping mechanism. Maybe single dosing causes more issues than it solves in grinders output.

Amazing video! even though a little confusing for me with all the markings.. What i want to ask is, i opened my silenzio for a quick cleaning. The thing is i never did any markings to put them back the way they are and now i dont know whats going on and im getting alot of retention all of a sudden. From putting in 17grams and getting 16.9, i now get 13-14 grams and the rest are stuck. I bang on it a bit and maybe another gram or 2 will come out but hardly what i put in.. Please help

On df 64 i have a question, is the "touching" or zero point at first sound of burr contact or all the way till it stops. I can tighten it and feel a first rub while it still moves quite freely.

Maybe I don't fully understand the geometry of the burrs, but doesn't the polishing of the flats indeed sharpen *some* of the edges which engage/cut some of the grinds? I'm thinking of the particles which are already partly ground and are barely larger than the grind setting. Don't they engage those very edges? Not that it matters in the slightest, :-)
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 2 года назад
I think there's an alignment method where you sand down the burr carrier part, I'm not sure if sanding down the top ledge of the burr is really going to make much of a difference.
@wiredgourmet
@wiredgourmet 2 года назад
That's my point, it doesn't. As for sanding the carrier, I've seen that psychotic video. Looks like it would take hours, and leave abrasive grit in the spaces between the motor and carrier. Shims are the way to go: non-destructive and easily reversible.
@catasky
@catasky 6 месяцев назад
It's not entirely true that the burrs are not sharper. The small ones along the edge that you polished will be.
@wiredgourmet
@wiredgourmet 6 месяцев назад
Well the edge is the place where 2 surfaces meet. One I can polish, and the other I can't touch. So maybe slightly sharper? But maybe not noticeably so.

Amazing content, as per usual. Unrelated to the video, but what do you think of the df64. I am considering buying it or the eureka specialita. I know the df64 has some workflow challenges that the specialista does not have, but this is something I may be willing to forgo if the df64 produces a superior grind. Your thoughts would be helpful I am sure.
@andrewcramer7214
@andrewcramer7214 2 года назад
If you drink filter coffee regularly do not buy the df64 without ssp burrs. I drank filter daily on the stock burrs and was bummed that my coffee really wasn't that good for 6mos. 2 days in with the ssp mp at only 70% alignment and it's not even close filter coffee went from round and bitter to clean and clear. Other than that, workflow is great if you rdt, no better valued grinder on the market except for maybe the lagom mini but the jury is still out on that one.
@caramelslice1748
@caramelslice1748 2 года назад
@@andrewcramer7214 Thanks a lot for the detailed response. I do drink filter often but I use my c40 for that and am fairly satisfied so that is not a big concern for me regarding the df64. As for the lagom mini it looks great, very compact and nicely designed etc but it is already sold out where I am so I would have to wait for a longer time. Additionally, I want to experiment with a flat burr grinder for espresso (and perhaps try it out for filter), so that is the appeal of the df64. Now in regard to that I have 3 options, stock burrs, ssp hu or ssp mp. Which do you have, and have you noticed a significant improvement in espresso since you installed them? Thanks.
@wiredgourmet
@wiredgourmet 2 года назад
My chief concern is the lack of a known, solid company behind it. Warranty issues could be problematic. Otherwise it's moddable as @Andrew Cramer points out and not too expensive.
@caramelslice1748
