Charo was, is, a truly wonderful guitar player. I watched her once just come on stage and play classical guitar like Jose Feliciano. After that, and also listening to her when she was serious (some long forgotten interview) and seeing how intelligent and knowing she was I never lost my admiration for her, and saw that her lively, funny persona was her own creation. Here the guys all look like lumps of coal next to her.
people don't know that she was living with her mother in the bronx all through the years of her greatest fame and that her sister made her stage clothes for her by hand
Some years back I had the occasion to meet Charo as well as hear her perform. As a musician she's the real deal, and as a person she was extremely gracious and outgoing.
I hate that most people don’t even know that about her... she’s not just classically trained.... at one time she was the best female guitarist in the world...
Charo is incredible in so many ways. Beautiful, sexy, funny as Hell, a great dancer, singer & a phenominal Flamenco guitarist. She is still a one in a million gem.
Always a treat to see a clip from before the show moved to Burbank. This episode is from Monday, September 13, 1971. Charo was electric! Also on this show was former boxer Jake LaMotta, Miss America Laurel Lea Schaefer and mentalist Kreskin. Good show. Burt was a very capable guest host. Thanks for posting this gem!
this is the first time i heard her sing. this was early in her career. she went on to study under Andres Segovia as her personal teacher!!! she was much more than just Flamenco. Spanish/Classical as well. i had no idea. i just remembered her as the zanie "coochie coochie" lady. then i swithched to playing acoustic guitar and rediscovered Charo. LOVE U CHARO! U are one of the best!!! Thank you for this vid! +++
@Ron D. And all that time he was Gay. No, people, I don't care but it just seemed so unbelievable. Back then, folks had to keep their "personal" life, just that. ....PERSONAL.
I was an opening act for Charo in some Performing Arts Center in San Diego..in between shows she took me down to her dressing room and played for me on her guitar..After she finished I smiled and said You studied with Cigovia....She just smiled.... What a talent
Andres Segovia was her guitar teacher she would practice 4 hours a day if she missed one note she would have to start the song over i seen her on the Mike Douglas taking about it awesome guitarist
charo is well known all over the world by the hit "dance a little bit closer" Never seen her sing this huge success live. if someone has this video... please post it here!
funny I remember seeing he ron all the shows of th e70;s when tv was worth staying home and watching, I always loved her but felt like we were getting to see an x-rated star....looking back I smile and say she was really talented!!!!!!!!!!!
Burt Reynolds was the best guest-host of The Tonight Show. He could've easily have his onw talk show and would've been quite successful. And Charo seems like such a funny woman!
WOW! the name of this song is "El Porompompero" a widely known spanish flamenco song. Charo may not have a great voice but surely is a great guitar player and an exceptional showman still nowadays.
Charo is a great example of what American taste was like back then. She was a classical guitarist, but we wanted her to gyrate and say, “Coochie Coochie.” Well, give the people what they want. I think that was the name of her dog.
Hello... thanks for posting this clip and another from this episode, this rare episode! would you have any more segments of this ? I'd like to see the rest of it. Thanks.
I do have the entire episode but I limit my postings to clips only. I used to have more clips from the Carson era "Tonight Show" but removed them as a precaution when Carson Productions began their own YT channel and started uploading. The few "Tonight Show" clips I left up were from programs featuring guest hosts.
Burt's sarcastic one-liner put this crazy twit away. "You need to stop acting so shy." Burt's timing was impeccable. Charo is like a caricature. I've asked many Latinas if they new who she was and they didn't really appreciate her. She overdoes her act.
@rkcsam69 Johnny Carson would go on vacation and even if it was a regular week he often was off the show on Monday nights and so a variety of guest hosts would sit in. Burt was one of them and many others including Garry Shandling, David Letterman, Joey Bishop, Joan Rivers, David Brenner, Bob Newhart etc.
She's still going strong ! She was in the news recently because her husband of many years had passed away. Bless her little ol' pea pickin' heart, as Tennessee Ernie Ford used to say !! :-)
