I think it's important to note that them having to do all this dangerous stuff as kids is literally the point of the story. The reason why it feels weird to you that they're sending 12 years olds on a quest is because IT IS supposed to be weird. The books (and the show as well) put a lot of emphasis on the fact that the gods are sending children to fight their own battles, they want you to not be ok with this. If you look back at the capture the flag scene, the armor they're wearing looks a bit weird on them because they are literal kids forced to become warriors. Also Percy wasn't picked to go on the quest just because. At this point Zeus was 100% convinced that Percy was the lightning thief, so sending him to find the bolt was the ultimate way to prove his innocence.

In the show Chiron just kind of callously appoints Percy. The only shred of caring he showed was when he said 'might be kinda hard, I dunno 🤷‍♂️". 😅😅 he certainly had no qualms about sending his students into hell 😂. I dunno if he was supposed to be a plot device or not, but it worked 👌. I was a bit indignant for the kids sake too lol.
@Vereenks3
@Vereenks3 8 месяцев назад
No this is totally false... the book explains why they send children, it's because most demigods don't survive long past 18. Their aren't many demigod adults to send on missions. That's a big plot point in the book because Percy is fearful of his future because most demigods don't have a future.
@Mia-fr6tq
@Mia-fr6tq 8 месяцев назад
@Vereenks3 Yes this is true but it still connects to what I was saying. The problem is the fact that the gods send their children to fight all their battles instead of doing it themselves. Then the reason why these children are so young is, as you said, because very few of them get to grow old.
@kikiscribbles

@@Mia-fr6tqlike most of the old myths, it's a tragedy; demigods die young because they're children of the gods. The gods send children to do their quests because they keep dying young.

Claroos is right. It's really rare for a demigod to reach adulthood. Also, the Camp is a summer camp. Most of the demigods live with their mortal parent during the school year and have a protector assigned to them during that time. So, during the school year, Chiron wouldn't be at camp very much.
@Gradestar10
@Gradestar10 8 месяцев назад
Hb th 'demigods rarely reach adulthood' part, it's a bit confusing actually, as demigods back in ancient greece were known to live to old age n die peacefully like perseus. Roman demigods have been shown w/ entire families while living in new rome, n th legacies- th kids of a demigod, n a mortal or th kids of 2 demigods- are also found living there. Historical demigods alluded to in th series such as george washington, frederic bartholdi n alfred hitchcock, among many others, lived past their 60s n 70s. Harriet tubman in particular lived to at least th age of 90
@mjm3091
@mjm3091 19 дней назад
@@Gradestar10 well it's not necessarily true that they all lived to adulthood in ancient times. We know that kids like Heracles were actively being hunted, but they just overcame the danger. Thing is there is only few dozens well know heroes from Ancient times. Compare that to dozens just in camp - the implication is simple, you just don't really hear a lot about the kids that don't survive long enough to be known heroes or gods. Even if we take all the real world people Rick considered as canon demigods - there have been hundreds to thousands of halfbloods who also lived at the same times, that we know nothing about. Roman camp specifically also have been doing so much better due to its structure, army training and the mentioned city for the adults and their families. Greek camp just wasn't as lucky, probably because you have immortal centaur and non-consensually sober god of wine run this whole thing.

Ok, nerdy realy hope you read this explanation: 1 - the mist can mess with mortals mind just like after killed the fury in the first episode everybody forgot her so Qiron could have made everybody belive he was always a teacher when he arrived yesterday (for every one else, I know that it's not what happens in the books but in the universe of the series and what it estabelished it can be an explanation) 2 - the shield plot in the movies isn't in the book, actualy from now on you can forget 99,9% of what happens in the movies because they altered almost everything.

My biggest thing here is they haven't realized yet is that Percy=Nerdy. He spent literally the entire episode basically asking "why don't we do things this way? It's so much easier" and Annabeth or Grover just shutting him down without barely any explanation which led him to send Medusas head to the gods against their wishes cause he's already sick of their stuff and feels like being "impertinent"

Dionysis and Chiron did not choose Percy. He chose himself (to rescue his mother from Hades) and then the Oracle of Delphi gave him his quest to retrieve the master bolt. The quest has less to do with Percy's age and more to do with him being a "forbidden child," and so one that the Fates take interest in. Much like how Herakles was able to strangle two serpents sent by Hera before he was old enough to walk.
@JJ_6036

wow....they REALLY should have explained that in the show because that is super interesting and also super duper relevant. Percy going on the quest came across as "child, we have problems and you will solve them for us. Don't like it? Go cry about it." -- With love, Chiron

you (the show) can give people in an inkling, or an implication, or a better understanding of how the world works without spoiling anything. That was missing a lot in episodes 1-3. I've never read the books but I could sense they were leaving stuff out on purpose that I, if I was Percy Jackson, would understand by now. Percy would have asked someone what an Oracle was, surely. Percy would have grilled Chiron about the quest, surely. etc. etc.

when chiron was a teacher at Yancy he wasn’t at camp half blood. it truly is that simple. he was kinda on leave to watch Percy for a few months. Percy gets kicked out of schools often so he’d only been at this school for a short time. Chiron doesn’t go back and forth. I agree that you’re thinking a little too hard and making it 10x more complicated than it is. a LOT of the answers to your questions ARE spoilers, so there isn’t much we can say. ALSO the shield was never a part of the book, it was a movie only change. And your understanding of Luke from the movie is NOTHING like the book. how he steals it and the entire ending is an entirely different story in the books.

@@geraldgrenier8132 so true! That's one of my main gripes about the movie - where they tried to add or delete book plot points to make a more "understandable" story, you 1. get a boring, bland, by the numbers movie with none of the things that made the books interesting, and 2. it undercut the whole series arc by explaining things early, now there is no story left to tell and you're adding scenes that never happened or happened way later to get the boring action that doesn't add anything to the actual story! After hearing Nerdy's reactions though, I 100% understand now how such garbage movies got made because people really act like they can't stand being confused for even half a second to let the story breathe and develop

Do remember that story progression and world building is not going to happen all at once. Episodic storytelling, especially weekly will give you information as you need it while keeping questions in your mind the show will specifically answer later. Frustration with lack of information atm shouldn't be confused with lack of detail in the story overall.

@JJ_6036
@JJ_6036 8 месяцев назад
Episodic storytelling does need to give you enough information at the beginning to care about the protagonists and the protagonist's quests. Not *understand*, mind you, *care*. That's what the guy in this video seemed upset about most of the time. As a non-book-reader myself, I too was frustrated how they rushed past things I thought were cool, and simply didn't explain things that were relevant at the time. Like what's at stake with a war of the gods? (very relevant to Percy's quest) What might Percy encounter on his quest? (very relevant) Why are the adults acting so nonchalant sending a child to his doom? (world-building would help us understand if we should hate the adults or not) Wtf is an oracle and why is it relevant? The quest would have happened either way! (just one single reason for Oracle's existence would have sufficed) There should be enough information in the first three episodes to make us care and make us understand that it won't be a waste of our time to watch. and we don't know for sure a show will explain things in the future. If they don't explain stuff when it is *exceptionally relevant*, why should we assume they ever will? Just explaining the antithesis because I too was frustrated by the lack of *extremely relevant* progression and world-building.

@@JJ_6036 To answer your questions only using clues from the show (I haven't watched Episode 4 yet, so idk what clues they give in that) A war between gods, in general, even without knowledge of the show is kind of obvious in terms of repercussions: destruction on a huge scale. They're GODS, what do you think would happen if they have a war? Spelling it out would just seem overly dramatic. It has been established that 1. Zeus might try to take a hit on Percy because he's a forbidden child, 2. Hades wants to get Percy to the underworld, sending the Furies to capture him and 3. that Monsters in general hunt demigods, Percy being one means monsters might just show up seemingly at random to try and kill him. Also he's going to be betrayed, as stated by the Oracle. Once he reaches the Underworld, he must face Hades and somehow get the Master Bolt from him, which has been established as well. I don't know what more you want? We have the point, where he must go, what might get in his way and who might work against him. It has been established that the gods don't really pay attention to their children unless they do something great, this should clue you in that they don't really care for their well-being. If you pay attention, you will also notice there are no adults in Camp. There simply are no other demigods available than children and, again, the gods don't really care unless their children do something great. The oracle gives the heroes important clues about their futures using prophecy, as shown. It stands to reason that this is why there is no quest unless she says so because the heroes need the hints and because oracles have always been mouth pieces of the gods, they're basically prophets, which I acknowledge hasn't been explicitly stated in the show, but I'm pretty sure that's common knowledge. Obviously the demigods can't do anything as important as a quest without the approval of the gods, which happens through the oracle and now has cemented itself as a cultural practice, even with Mr D present. Sometimes cultural practices don't make sense in the current situation but are important anyway. Story-wise, it also builds tension and lets people think about and speculate who they think will betray Percy. Sorry for the essay. My point is: they don't spell everything out and you need to think about the information given to you to figure stuff out.

@@jay8569 sure, and I get that. You seem knowledgable about the books which means you already care about the world of PJ. I think what I'm realizing is that the show isn't making me care about what's going on, rather than "I need all the information now". And I want to care. A lot of the things you mentioned that the show reveals they told us after Percy received his quest. The most important decision of the season was made and we don't care about it yet/aren't on board yet/don't understand ANY of the context. Basically, as a first time viewer, I would expect to know whatever the main character knows, as well as the what the authority figures might tell him. The show purposefully left us out of the loop on many basic things that Percy would have known, or Chiron would have mentioned. I know Percy is new, but surely Chiron would tell Percy all he knows and what he thinks Percy might face and what's at stake with a war of the gods. Percy would ask many questions and probably ask other campers too. And if Percy knows we should know. These are subliminal things you put together easily without even trying. We can sense we're being left out, or treated as stupid. It sucks being left out, I feel like they can create suspense with lore without leaving us out of basic things we would know if we were Percy Jackson. I am sure the books made you feel like Percy Jackson. I've heard you could hear his thoughts lol. This show is farrrrrrr from that it seems 🤔 see what I mean?

@@JJ_6036 I get what you mean, but even in the books Percy is perpetually confused. No one is tellig that kid much of anything. I promise you, that guy doesn't know more than you because Chiron is cryptic as shit and Mr D is just generally unhelpful. You know as much as him. Confusion is very much a part of his story because he was just thrown into this new world and is expected to be good at it so now he's just winging it. He has to make the same deductions and he is very much being left out of things. Annabeth knows something really important already and won't tell him for years because Chiron told her not to tell him. The confusion is intentional. You're supposed to feel left out because you (and Percy) are being left out. He doesn't really have time to ask other campers because he has to train and he doesn't have many friends yet and he's only there for a few days before leaving. It's a very full few days.

It covers up ALL the magical world from humans, including CREATING explanations for the lack there of. The mist. is so powerful that you'll see on the next episodes what humans can see. Third, demigods BARELY survive before they know who they actually are. Satyrs are trained protectors. They can sense demigods and they can also sense when a demigod is stronger or more important than your average half-blood. Grover was at Percy's school as a part of his job, trying to sus out any demigods there. He sensed that Percy was special, and informed Chiron about it. Chiron showed up at the school and became a teacher to investigate Percy further. The camp is a summer camp. Most kids go home in the fall and then return in the spring. Some demigods live at camp year round, but it's not like Chiron is needed there 24/7, certainly not during fall/winter/spring when there are less kids present.

The thing about the age you said after the episode, it is explained in the books that most demigods, if not all of them, get to an adult age, they all die really young so that's why sending kids on quests doesn't even concern them, it's just another tuesday. About having demigods all around the planet, could be possible but also it is explained that Olympus go to the most like "powerful/important" places so nowadays it is on the US (NY to be more precise) so the gods stay around it, for other places there's also another gods like Egyptians and Nordic, but then it's a whole different thing The greek gods are the center to this storyline but they're not the only gods in this world, basically Also about the Zeus/Poseidon war, Mr D said on the second episode that they have fought before and nearly destroyed the world so if they fought again they could pretty much just do it, and like about who they will send on the quests to solve their problems that's not up to them, it's whoever the gods pick (poseidon did by claiming percy) or whoever the oracle says About the luke/shield/bolt, the only answer we can give you without spoiling things that were not in the movie is no, luke didn't give him a shield in the book, now let's just wait and see how we get the bolt

One of the things that I find both fascinating and frustrating is how people who haven't read the books want the the show to have been done differently--they have all kinds of ideas for how it could have been better and don't understand why it was done the way it was done. In most cases, the answer is simple: The story is what it is and is being told the way it's being told because that's what's in the books. If you don't like it, your issue is most likely with the source material, not the TV show. The TV show is trying to be a faithful adaptation of the source material (while still making some changes due to time and budget, or to improve narrative flow, or to be more inclusive, etc.). The changes you think would improve things might bother fans of the books, or might not be align with future stories, or might not make sense for how the current story is supposed to unfold. The funny thing is, many of the people who haven't read the books and are criticizing the show are the same people who would make a fuss if one of their favorite book series wasn't adapted faithfully. I think Nerdy understands this. As I recall, he was very happy with the Netflix adaptation of The Sandman, but people who hadn't read The Sandman were often confused and thought it should have been done differently (e.g., we should have spent more time in a particular place or with a particular character, certain characters should have come back or had a bigger role, some things were resolved too quickly or too easily, they should have focused the first season on ______ and saved everything else for future seasons). But if Gaiman and Netflix had consulted those people before making the show, and made changes based on their feedback, Nerdy probably would have been disappointed by how far the TV show strayed from the source material.

I think a lot of the "giant, world-ending stakes" aspect is over-exaggerated. It's Greek mythology, and the God's are petty, and typically depicted as completely detached and borderline insane. I mean, Zeus is ALWAYS fighting with his brothers, and EVERYTHING that goes wrong is always THE WORST THING EVER in their eyes. I think this is a word where, if Apollo ran out of toilet paper, he would throw a fit and get one of the half-bloods to go on an "Epic Quest" to Walmart. For the glory and the honor. lol. Though, I think the stolen lightning bolt issue is a bit bigger than most, it obviously isn't THAT bad, or like you said, the Gods wouldn't have left it in the hands of a 12 year old. It's more of a "Zeus is angry and someone needs to fix it." - kind of thing. Percy getting claimed as a forbidden son of the God that Zeus is fighting with was a shiny golden opportunity for Dionysus to say "Oh. This doesn't have to be my problem. Here kid. Take this quest. it's REALLY IMPORTANT! Like, the MOST important!". Chiron, I believe is concerned for Percy and understands that there is actual danger involved, and want's Percy to take it seriously. Other than that, from a narrative perspective, ...it's a kids adventure series. You have to suspend disbelief a bit to accept that the adults in the story kind of HAVE to be (at least a little) incompetent in order for the whole genre to even work. They have to take a backseat to the machinations of teenagers. I mean, look at Animorphs, right? Dumb/oblivious adults are a staple of the "teens save the world" trope. To the merit of the author, I do think satisfying that trope by using the classic pettiness of the Greek Gods, is a smart and fun move. But yeah. I think you might just be fixating on the fact that Dionysus made it a big deal. An important thing to note, that might help too: The main character doesn't really care that much about it, so you probably shouldn't either. Percy is doing the quest to save his mom. That's what's important. The lightning bolt is tertiary. (until later when maybe it's not.)

@alangarde2928
@alangarde2928 8 месяцев назад
I think with a show like this you really have to look at who it's intended for and what it's trying to do. The books are recommended for ages 9-14, they are an adventure story with a lot of wish-fullment of putting kids into a magic world where a kid like you who feels out of place can be a hero and go on quests. They might touch on themes lightly, like loss, but it's OK they don't get into it deeply because it at heart is a fun adventure which also brings an interesting introduction to greek mythology. It's ludicrous in any reality to think of putting a bunch of kids on a bus to go across the country alone. It's also the sort of thing that happens in many adventure stories where the adults are idiots and the kids have to step up and save the day. Other stories can do the harsh reality of growing up and the difficulties of life. The question for me is does the show do this well? It ignores a lot of 'reality' of the real world for the sake of it's quest adventure, so puts the world in a simplified magic way. But, it doesn't dumb down the kids, it doesn't go for over goofy childish shennanigans or slapstick. The kids are competent. The personal peril of the kids is real, the kids are smart and earnest. The character problems are relatable to kids (trying to stick together with friends despite disagreeing who is in charge/what should be done). The show doesn't talk down, the actors are great, the effects really really well done. To me, the show does well what it is trying to be. By having the kids the age they are in the book this is a boys-own kinda adventure which is swash-buckling, exciting, has a bit of peril and maybe leads to talks with your parents about some of the things touched on. It works way better than having the age they were in the movies. It's the sort of show you can sit and enjoy with your kids of that age and be swept up by and that's fine. It's the sort of thing that I (as a kid) did when we sat down and watched the original Dr Who with my parents.
@ericjette2435
@ericjette2435 8 месяцев назад
I had a similar thought. Although kids can and do enjoy action/adventure stories with adult heroes, they want to believe that they could be the hero, that they could go on such a quest. They don't want to wait until they grow up--to a kid the time between childhood and adulthood seems like an eternity. These stories (like so many others) are wish-fulfillment fantasies. If you want all the adults in the story to behave sensibly and responsibly, then the kids would be kept at home, as well protected as possible, and the story couldn't happen. Having said that, the idea that most of the Olympians have a half-blood child every few years and that few of them last to adulthood (or beyond their 20s) is pretty horrible.

Grover was not sent to be Percy's protector, satyrs are sent out to schools to keep an eye out for potential demigods. Grover happened to find Percy and alerted Chiron immediately, which is why he came to Percy's school. Grover sensed that there was something special about him and he had a very strong aura. Chiron does not often make "house calls" to potential campers. Grover was also encouraged to wait longer before going back out, but was desperate to make up for his mistakes. I can see that you are missing his trauma visually though.

Not sure if you'll see this but on Grover's age, a real world example would be the difference between humans and dogs. An adult dog on average has the mental capabilities of 2/2.5 year old human. A dog may have experienced 15 years of life as a sentient creature but they would still have low mental capacity than say a 10 year old human even though they've been around longer than the human. Apply that to satyrs. A 24 year old satyr would generally have the mental and emotional capabilities of a 12 year old human because they species develops at half the rate that humans do. Basically it would take satyr two year to reach the developmental achievements of a 1 yr old human. Hope this helps

Some of the things y'all complaining can be easily explained like example: -the "kids" sent on quest are not just kids, they are demigods with supernatural abilities and battle instincts that are literally TRAINED to fight in the camp. Going on a quest is one way to get "kleios" or glory which have been pointed out on the series and on the book that is considerd highly valued in this world. Demigods in general are not expected to have a long life because of the dangers of being one and their fight for glory so Camp half blood isn't exactly an orphanage it's more of a training ground. -Yes 200$ is not enough on a quest but they are also given golden drachmas which are the currency that is specifically used by demigods in disguise in the modern world that can be used as substitute to the normal currency.

Book reader comment here (From pjo-hoo and till trial of apollo): Interestingly the thing about adult demigod is not that they don't exist, but when they reach adulthood, the gods (Dyonysis basically) doesn't really want to deal with them anymore and just let them fend for themself, basically kicking them out of the camp. It is a camp coz most normal demigod just stay with their parents until summer. Barely anyone stayed in camp. Camp half blood is basically soo... greek, that they're considered messy and disorganized. Meanwhile in their Roman counterpart (series not there yet), Camp Jupiter, Adult Demigod handle lots of stuff, and they even have university there. Basically meant that Roman are more organized.

Nerdy makes a good point! Why SHOULD Percy care about the problems of the gods? The point is that the gods are childish and fickle and force the demigods to be a part of their personal squabbles, and Percy is one of the few to really push back against that. He doesn't think they're all they're cracked up to be and that they don't deserve as much power as they wield, which is a big part of his character and his struggle throughout the series. The gods are his family, in a way, and they're a better option that a lot of the other stuff that's out there, but they're still wildly irresponsible and unpredictabke and hurt the people he loves

So quick solution to many of the nitpicks if no one wants to read the wall of text beneath this: Percy Jackson is a middle grade urban fantasy. When you pick up an urban fantasy book, you understand that you need to suspend your disbelief about magic existing in secret in our world. That's part of the buy-in for starting an urban fantasy book - you have to agree that you will suspend your disbelief over things like 'how does Chiron get around', 'is he a full-time teacher at the school/how did he get the job?', 'how does $200 get them to LA?', and specifically with middle grade, 'why are the protagonists children?', 'why are these kids not getting therapy for their dead parents', 'why can no adults complete this very dangerous and important task?' Being 'consistent' in the way you approach every singe genre is a weakness in interacting with literature, not a strength and you miss out on a lot of the point of the stories and the characters and their decisions. The point of middle grade books is to give children examples of protagonists that they can identify with and see doing amazing deeds (also a great deal of catharsis for them as the adults are shown to be incompetent, cruel, or wrong). It's much more entertaining for children to read about kids fighting gods and monsters, of them being the sole person who can save the world, than it is for them to read about a kid just staying at camp all summer while the adults take care of the big picture stuff. As adults, we might be satisfied with a quieter, more introspective story like that, but most middle grade urban fantasies do lean toward high-stakes stories so kids can feel like mighty heroes. If you can't accept that, then I don't think middle grade urban fantasy is for you. This show (and the books) definitely take for granted that you know at least a little bit about Greek Mythology/can extrapolate a bit. The argument that 'why does anyone care if the gods fight? what does that even look like?' is just...how little knowledge/imagination do you have? If a story said 'the stakes are that the forces of heaven and hell are going to war', then it's understood that's a bad thing and will affect everyone. They don't really have to spell it out in detail right at this moment why that's bad. Same with the greek gods - just look at some of the most famous pieces of literature: have you ever heard of the Trojan War? Because that was due to the gods being at war with one another. Like, it feels like Nerdy's looking for a reason to not understand things rather than just....idk, understanding that this is a middle grade story about greek gods where kids are going to be the heroes? And the argument that 'are the adults morons?' - Percy literally is questioning all these things actively. It's a common storytelling practice to have a 'culture' set up in a way that the protag or another character comes into and points out the flaws of. You know, like Percy is constantly doing. Storytelling that includes a flawed system that will be interrogated over the course of the series is, like, the point of many stories - not the mark of a bad one. Also, Clarus is 1000000% correct about Grover. Just because Grover isn't emoting the way that Nerdy thinks he should be, doesn't mean Grover's way of dealing is incorrect. People don't all respond to trauma the same. I've found Grover to be the most emotionally deep and complex of all the characters so far.

I LOVE YOUR DISCUSSIONS There was a point in one of the later books when Percy gets to a place where there are grown up demigods and he feels flabbergasted because before that point he's never heard of such a thing. That's how dangerous the life of a half-blood is and that's why Chiron and Dionysus didn't send anyone older. There isn't anyone that much older who'd go instead. And then there is also a point of Zeus blaming the whole thing on Percy just because of who he is And can I just say that these are not harpies, these are Furies. There are only three of them total Okay, so the Chiron being the teacher thing went like this in the book: Grover found Percy and thought that Percy smelled like a very strong half-blood, so he called for Chiron to help him And yeah, the shield is actually not in the book hahahahaha The story with the lightning bolt simply goes a VERY different way (I hope Clarus won't tell Nerdy where it comes from so that he can be surprised by the story)

I think you're really lacking some information. And I know it should've been clearer in the series, but some of this maybe be presented later, but anyway, I thought it was worth it to comment 1) Poseidon and Zeus fighting is literally the sky and the sea figthing, so imagine all the natural catastrophes possible, lightning storms, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, tsumanis, etc 2) They don't send older people cause 1st they don't have. Heroes die young, that's a rule in this world. Luke is one of the oldest characters we know, and he's 19 in the first book. 2nd, because this whole mess is about Percy. The prophecy is about him (the oracle literally only speaks to the one it's about), the war is because of him. Zeus think he stole the lightning bolt, and he decided that Percy has to be the one to return it. Poseidon claimed him so he could solve this mess before war began. 3) In the book, Chiron and Dionysus actually disagree about sending Percy to the quest, Dionysus thinks they sould kill him right there and solve the problem, and Chiron says they should give him the opportunity to go on the quest. But both of them emphasize a lot about how dangerous it would be. Chiron does care about the heroes, it's his job, but when there's a prophecy and fate involved, he can't interfere. 4) No, the 'adults' aren't responsable. First, they're immortals, so their sense of reality is way differente than ours. They don't have to deal with money, they don't worry about mundane stuff. Also, the gods don't care about the heroes, that's the whole thing. They use demigods to solve their problems, for their own interest. Dionysus especially hates demigods, he's in camp halfblood as a punishment 5) No, there aren't thousands of demigods in the world. As the flame of the occident moved to the USA, so did the gods, especifically to NY. As the Mount Olympus is the enbodyment of their power, they don't go too far, it makes them vulnerable. So the largest amount of demigods in this era are born in the USA, only a few stray for other countries. In the books they say there are around 100 demigods in camp halfblood when Percy arrives there, and the number reduces each book. Well, I hope it helps you to enjoy the series more

the books do a better job at explaining like, every single issue you have lol. camp half blood is located on long island. chiron had been at Yancy Academy for a single year and took a leave of absence from camp and was there to look after percy because they suspected him of being a very powerful demigod (because of a prophecy) which meant monsters would find him faster. and also demigod survival rates are like. exponentially low. barely any make it past the age of 13 without help from camp half blood. and even then it’s just summertime camp so year round when they go home they still encounter monsters and some don’t come back the next year. that’s why they train so hard. also percy is explicitly the only one capable of doing this quest they make it very crystal clear in the books. he is the son of Poseidon. and THE ONLY living forbidden child. also, they make it more clear that Zeus and Poseidon going to war would literally cause a global natural catastrophe. by the time he gets to camp in the book there are hurricanes and earthquakes and tornadoes and thunderstorms and tons of chaos already happening. you really should read the books after the show ends and compare your thoughts! all of your issues with the show are throughly explained in the book by this point in the story it’s just hard to adapt every single little detail to an 8 episode television show aimed at middle school/high school.

Okay so there’s actually a reason they’re all American-the Greek gods currently reside in America. They go wherever the heart of culture and art is the strongest, from Greece to Rome, then after Rome fell (this is surmising based on history) it would have been somewhere in Germany but they were weak because it was the dark ages and information on them was censored and christianized, then Italy during the Renaissance they were reborn bc when the printing press was invented they printed a bunch of Greek mythology and philosophy to distribute and the Greek gods in turn inspired paintings (Cassandra was actually a very popular girls name bc the Iliad and all writing on the Trojan war was massively popular), then France in the 1600-1700s with all the art and philosophy that rose in that time, then America became a melting pot of cultures and it’s principles were inspired by Greek thought and philosophy and New York is a huge center of art and music, so the gods moved there. While there certainly would be (and are, love u Reyna even ((tho ur exact parentage is a massive spoiler the rules are the same because they’re technically the same)) demigods in other countries, they’re uncommon because the gods just do not live there. They spend most of their time in America, where Mount Olympus currently resides

*******Movie Spoilers************* I actually listened to the whole conversation after the episode. Some of the questions that you were asking are answered in the next two episodes, which you've seen by now. The other questions will probably be answered in future episodes. As for the aster bolt being hidden in the shield, that is a movie thing. That's not what happened in the book. In the book, it's not so obvious who stole the bolt. Also, I don't think there's a fight on the rooftops between Percy and the thief. There is a fight, but Percy's opponent is not another half-blood.

The books originally took place in the early 2000s, and they got 100$, which still isn't a lot, but inflation is quickly making it more and more unrealistic.

It is fair that they did not explain what would be so bad about a godly war. On the simpler side, even if it was just Zeus and Poseidon, they mention that their domains reflect the gods as much as the gods reflect their domains, so a war between Zeus and Poseidon would present as the sky and the sea going to war with each other, and storms tearing the world apart, resulting in a weather apocalypse.

Warning, incoming long post, but I'll keep it spoiler free and only stick to the info they've touched on in the show itself with examples best I can. But I think that I can help Nerdy understand things a bit better overall after listening to the entire convo at the end. Yeah, all of it, and I understand because I like for things to make sense too lol. 1. The Greeks Gods are and always have been and extremely petty and childish group of beings. They fight and squabble constantly. And they can't steal each others powers, but their demigod children can. so enter... 2. Demigods! While the gods could have planted their seeds constantly, they are fickle. They are only drawn really to their "type" of human. And when they do, they tend to slack at their jobs. 3. The Big Three just have really powerful children compared to the rest of the gods. But the Gods are often fighting more than they are not, it's just normally a pretty bad time for everyone when they do. 4. The Gods definitely take out each others children, especially in each others domain. And Especially the Forbidden Children, cause the deal was nobody gets to have more demigod children. So Tahlia was the daughter of Zues, she couldn't take a boat anywhere cause that's Poseiden's territory. Hades sent powerful monsters after her, though it was tough cause it was Thalia, Luke, & Annabeth. Even though it was four years ago, those were three REALLY powerful demigods so they almost made it to camp. 5. Grover. He is 24 human years old, but that's also assuming that Satyr's mature emotionally, mentally, and physically at the same rate. Satyr's are trained to be protectors, to search out possible demigods, confirm them, and then get them back to camp. They aren't designed to be warriors, but to be guides. That's why there are Satyr's Paths, etc. They are supposed to show you how to get from point A to point B. Mr. D is basically like the supervisor god of Satyrs, so him saying do something basically the highest level of a command, which is why it took time for him to come around. He also carries that weight about Thalia still, as he was tasked with bringing those powerful demigods back to camp. He did get Luke and Annabeth, who are two of the strongest, but lost the strongest one. So he failed successfully. 6. As for the adult demigods, in theory it would be cool if adults came back to help out. But those that grown up go on to have a normal life, able to protect themselves as the magic of the camp only works to a certain age. That's why there wasn't any adult demigods around, they are out in the real world. Having a Seal Team Six would be cool, but certain things make it difficult, cause a cell phone is like a beacon for monsters, so an adult demigod would be getting targeted, family too. 7. As for the quest...it would be great if they had more help, but Greek quest are supposed to be difficult. Legendary difficulty, but fate somehow provides a way if you keep trying. Flying would mean Zues would probably blow up the plane just because. He's done worse over less. Gods really are based, which is the part that makes it great. The Gods aren't perfect, they are often trash in the worst of ways. Which the characters also say and will talk about more, hopefully. As for the last question you asked about the "shield", Rick Riordan, Uncle Rick as we call him, was running the show and also change things to make the full 5 book series have more continuity overall. I would say wait it out best you can, but the adults overall aren't built like that. The Gods can't really work together or even do their jobs right, Mr. D might be the worst of them which is way he is punished with watching the camp, and Chiron is OLD old. He's a trainer of heroes. P.S. Camp Half-Blood is a summer camp for most of the campers, they go back home after the summer, except for a few people like Luke and Annabeth

9:35 To be fair Annabeth isn't wrong, Athena by her own nature is always just, the issue is that law and tradition changes. Back then having "fun" in a temple of virgin-goddess would be blasphemous. And this story follows the myth, where Medusa did it with Poseidon consensually.

Your hades logic is also a bit flawed. Right now the characters think that Hades stole the bolt to start a war between Poseidon and Zeus. But Zeus thinks Percy stole the bolt for his father (because if Poseidon was willing to father a forbidden child and challenge Zeus’ authority that way, why wouldn’t he try to steal Zeus’ weapon to overthrow him). If Hades did steal the bolt to start a war, then Percy is a loose end he needs to deal with. It therefore makes sense that Chiron, and others, would think that Hades wants to capture Percy so that he can kill him and pretend to have found the bolt with Percy, returning it to Zeus and undermining Poseidon. If they were right about hades having stolen the bolt, his biggest threat is Percy being free because he can more easily prove he doesn’t have the bolt and was framed. Hades’ only recourse if he stole the bolt to start a war, is to kill Percy so that Percy can’t prove his innocence.

The Master Bolt was stolen at a festival when the demigods at Camp Half-Blood all visited Olympus, so it could have been anyone. The show skips over this explanation, which was a mistake.

Explaining why Percy was chosen would spoil the rest of the story but you should also know the the oldest demigods at chb is probably 17 other usually don’t live and if they do they die after leaving camp around 18 most likely

Also if you want to know what happens when the gods fight each other, read the classic poem “ode to Demeter” which was written in Ancient Greece. It tells the story of hades and Persephone’s marriage, and how being excluded from the whole discussion and having her daughter taken to her marital bed without proper time to prepare her sent Demeter into a flurry of rage where she demanded Persephone be returned to her and when she was not, she stopped the harvest. Demeter was the goddess of agriculture, so when she stopped the harvest, the world went into an eternal winter. People had nothing to eat, and so they died. With no people, the gods didn’t receive sacrifices. The world went into a complete standstill and the human beings all died because none of the natural phenomena they needed was happening. So the whole pomegranate thing happened and Demeter brought the world back to life, and Demeter brought spring for the first time. When Persephone leaves again, she gets sad again and stops the harvest creating winter. So a war between Zeus and Poseidon would create the upmost devastating hurricane, with tornadoes and earthquakes, and then the harvests would stop, the sun would stay still in the sky, natural phenomena would cease and humans all die as the gods try to kill each other
