In one of my recent videos I talked about why I think the humble waterproof poncho is up there with the Mora knife in terms of usefulness for the bushcrafter.
A lot of viewers asked if I could show the modifications I have made to mine in more detail. So here it is.
Enjoy

... And God knows we're all in need of a Poncho in this summer's weather. (a.k.a known in these parts 'LIQUID SUNSHINE')

Reminds me of Morecombe and Wise "Bring me sunshine" song, which i discovered on YT recently.

Excellent modifications. have you thought of doing 'how to use a sewing machine' video?. I would watch that and might start using the 70 year old Singer I inherited.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a second time. Consistently one of the very best Bushcraft channels, a great approach to the subject, skills and kit. Always look forward to an upload 👍🏻 👍🏻👍🏻

I’ve wanted to do this mod for a long time now, ever since you first bought the subject up a few years ago. It’s bitter sweet really because I now have my late mother’s Elna sewing machine, it dates to the early 1980s, but is meant to be a very, very capable machine, in fact, quite a desirable on on the used machine market. It’s going to take some time to learn how to use it though, there are all sorts of attachments, and these disc things for different stitches, about 20 or so. I also want to do the zip mod on my Lavvus, and maybe mod the size 2 into a larger size with the extra bits on the bottom (whatever you call them).

A colleague from the Netherlands Army told me the hood was large to cover helmet and respirator, and could also be used over an NBC/CBRN suit if nuclear, biological, chemical threats were evident and added cover was needed from the weather. Having done similar training with British forces it makes a lot of sense. From a general use, bushcraft, survival etc sense your mods also make the poncho more versatile, I have one of these ponchos and this is a project i will do during the year if i get some spare time. I also carry lighter weight ponchos as an adjunct to the main one and light bivi sheet too. It always pays to have options especially with our weather. Nice one. Do you have a video that covers the mesh idea in your alcohol cooker? ATB stay safe, happy trails and keep up the excellent educational videos.

Last year July was wet and cool all month. It's kind of like spring and summer have switched places!😂😢😅

You really ought to craft a natural pole set ! I just thought of lovely sections of bamboo, lashed three times per 15" section, and with hardwood dowell inserts to join 😃. I have a duch army poncho that i have at work for shelter or if im stuck in a mewp in the rain. Im a tree surgeon , and the hood goes over my helmet with ear defenders and visor ! Its great, and keeps me super dry if worn with my waterproof. Cant beat double waterproof 😂

Simply great, once again you have put a simple explanation of taking a essential bit of kit that we are all likely to have, and showen how to make 10 times better. Thanks again for your work. Be well Neill

Great idea and modifications. Have you thought of selling them? Either people send you their own poncho and you mod them, or supply a poncho already done? I would for one buy one.

Hi Neal. another very informative video, thank you. I am looking at adding some of the fireproof foam to a trangia burner to increase safety, but I can't remember what the foam is called. Could you enlighten me please. Many thanks.

great ideas, will try them soon. Joke to follow, I have only most sizes 8 to 65mm nylon, polyester or HMPE webbing, guess I have to buy few sizes polypropylene and i will discard my industrial sewing machines (shoemakers, sailmakers and overlock). joke ended. Yes I have those machines (bought as non functional at auction one needed new motor, another cleaning and lubricant third just had needle piece in the feed pawl) and plenty of webbing as I do boat stuff for myself and others at local marina as well as repair for local sports club (the youth teams are always short on funds) but not professionally, just a winter hobby, still means that I have plenty of scraps... yes, those ponchos are made to fit OVER a helmet.

I said to a wild camper on RU-vid who wanted multi use equipment why didn't he instead of a rain coat and a small tarp why not take a decent poncho he mistook what I meant and said he would but he wasn't Clint Eastwood I told him I meant an army poncho and he laughed and said he didn't think of that it was all in fun but he hadn't thought of a water proof poncho I did say I saw a woman using one on here and instead of he mods you put in to use tent poles she uses a telescopic hiking stick and just pits it on middle uses a hair crunchy to secure middle to stick and pegs down the four corners I'm a biker and first place water gets in is seems and areas you see patchs onto

no one ever explains how to work out what length the poles need to be
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 Месяц назад
It depends on the size of the poncho you are using. You could use geometry but if you've got a tape measure easier just to measure the diagonal i.e. from one opposing corner to the other.
@robthompson1399
@robthompson1399 Месяц назад
@simonh6371 you could work out the hypotenuse of the diagonal... but it wouldn't work ! As you see Neil's poncho is not flat upon completion of the set up. That means the poles are longer than the true diagonal. I would suggest experimenting with some bamboo canes or similar. Now that I think of it, I'm really surprised that Neil has not crafted his own natural pole set !
@RootsLion
@RootsLion Месяц назад
@@robthompson1399 Exactly . i dunno what range of extra pole length gives u what height to the arch... hence d vid request i sent via fb so far unanswered ..
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 Месяц назад
@@robthompson1399 Are you sure? The true diagonal bends as do the poles, as does the entire surface of the poncho. However I think the poles have to be a tiny bit longer to make the tension, at least that's how I envisage it.
@robthompson1399
@robthompson1399 Месяц назад
@simonh6371 yes I am sure the poles will be longer than the true diagonal, by how much is why you should go and experiment.

6:51 Sorry to be off subject, but don’t you get a bit of a meths taste in your drink after taking off the burner you’ve snuffed out and placing it on your brew? I’m just thinking how my Trangia kettle smells after storing the burner in it, even when it’s in its plastic bag.🤔
