I was in the thrift store last weekend and saw this awesome old green tennis racket and though, that would make for a cool knife handle... and so I bought it and proceeded to make a nice bushcraft knife and sheath. I hope you all enjoy the video, it was a fun little project.

Word of caution for anyone who is going to try drilling handle pin holes in a knife blank, CLAMP IT DOWN! Several years ago, I had the bit grab a hold of the knife and spin it around like a lawn mower from HELL! I got lucky and only sliced my palm slightly. I would have lost my thumb if my hand had not been flat at the time. So I hope someone can learn from my stupidity and save themselves some headache and blood. Cheers!

i had a similar experience when I was fileing a knife and I pressed to hard an the blade snapped my hand hit the blade and I cut my knuckle open, i still have a scar and it hurt like hell, good advice is press softly not too hard and wear thick gloves, learned my mistake the hard way

In 60+ years of being in the woods and on rivers hunting, fishing or just passing time in some shelter, I never encountered a situation where a good quality boning knife, out of the box, has failed me. I don't have bragging rights to my cutlery style or shape, but for knife work I have never been let down. These knives have been designed by centuries of use and I don't need a self designed pattern to make things any more difficult than they are. Just keep what ever you have sharp and rust free

Yup, knives get lost not broken. In the case of such a hard and brittle knife like a chef knife this is an entirely likely result at least if it’s dropped on a rock or batoned.

The old Chicago Cutlery knives are nice steel. If they have the model number on the handle, like yours said "Chicago Cutlery 44S" it means it is USA made and it's made from 440c. Not bad steel for a bushcraft knife!

That leather looks like ray skin (shark), that’s why it’s rough & dry. Quite a find at a thrift store & good size too. I too had an issue repairing a 30 year old spiderco knife, only having to enlarge the hole for a new pin.

@oldshovel
@oldshovel 5 лет назад
Lol. I know the thought. I removed the pins on a previous knife video and they were not what I expected. If you don’t plan on reusing the pins/handle try drilling the center of the pin out with a small drill bit and then go progressively larger, the part of the pin that goes through the knife blade is likely smaller than the visible part of the pin on the handle.
@terenceokane
@terenceokane 5 лет назад
@@oldshovel If I just pry and pry, will the pins pop out? I wouldn't mind saving them. The wood is still good and the pins look nice, the knife is just old and needs to be cleaned and glued and clamped.

I ran into the same problem drilling pin holes in a SS steak knife blade! It was more of a disaster for me because I had already epoxied the wood handles on! The laminated tennis racket wood has a nice look.
@oldshovel
@oldshovel 5 лет назад
Ouch on the blade. With this one at first I just thought it was my older bit being dull. I like the lamination on the handle also it almost made me want to clean away all the green but that would have nullified the whole objective of keeping the tennis racket look. It’s a fun knife and I may used the rest of the racket on another build in the future. Again, thanks for watching.

@WheeliePete
@WheeliePete 5 лет назад
Love it! If you're going to do more knives like that where you need to drill them, you might just go ahead and invest in a solid carbide drill bit specifically for dealing with the hardened steel. Amazon affiliate link to what I'm talking about: amzn.to/2HslO4R The bit in that link says it will handle up to 65 rockwell which should be fine for kitchen knives (I read somewhere that most french chef knives come in somewhere around 54-56 which is why they need to be touched up on the sharpening steel often, but that lower hardness does make them easy to sharpen.) Even with that solid carbide bit you would need to use a lot of coolant (oil, cutting fluid, etc.) during the drilling and you would want to go slowly, might even have to use a hand drill if you can't get the RPM's down slow enough on the drill press. Looked like the heating of the dill spots go you through it, but I bet your looking at videos on how to sharpen bits now. ;-) The other option is to friction drill those holes out and then grind flat, but those bits are $$$... (amazon affiliate link to a friction bit example): amzn.to/2HwoiPB (BTW, friction drilling and friction welding videos are fun to watch on RU-vid...lol..)

If you don't use light machine oil while drilling steel, expect your drill bit to die. I take it you didn't do any metal work at school?
@oldshovel
@oldshovel 5 лет назад
Lol. I did have metal work in shop class and I did use oil but could have used more. The issue I really had was the tempering and my drill press (shop smith) was set on high speed. I should have bumped the speed down and taken out the temper first. Thanks for watching and commenting. Much appreciated.
