Just a hint for contact cement: apply to both surfaces with a very thin coat, then let both surfaces dry for several minutes. Once dry, press the surfaces together firmly. They will bond instantly and will require hardly any clamping.

I use a little piece of elastic for my fire steel lanyard. That way it can stretch around itself easily and stays secure in the loop. Nice job on that sheath.

I use shock cord for most of mine. It’s kind of like paracord except its stretchy like elastic. In a pinch I’ve been known to use those stretchy hair ties girls use to put their up in ponytails. Cheers mate and happy trails

I MAINLY REPAIR leather and sails, for myself, so use the original holes if i can, i use sailmakers needles which are pointed. i learned that you pre-drill for the stitching, and that grooving tool is great, i noticed your needles had rounded or BALL ends, much easier, as they wont pick up the first thread thro the hole. i like also your wheel spacer for marking stitch length, - i bought one some time ago, without knowing what it was for, but then figured it out, i knew it was something I could use somewhere sometime, - never too late to learn , - SAILOR 75 years old :) - THANKS I WATCHED your knife making video first, then searched for this link..... :)

Hey, I really like your videos. Between your calm voice, the music, and the video production these are very easy to watch. Suggestions for sheath making...use 1/8" or 3/16" shock cord (bungee) instead of the Paracord for the tightest hold of the fire steel. Also, I just tried something that I recently saw here on YT for wet molding and it worked great. Use a vacuum sealer like a FoodSaver for the best wet mold results. Leave the knife in the sheath for 10 to 15 minutes under vacuum. Remove from vacuum bag, remove the knife and let dry. You may need to massage it a little around the handle as the vacuum is being pulled. If one side of your bag material is textured, you will need to put something behind it. I used a double thickness of file folder material cut to the width of the sheath.

A couple thing you should invest in a beveller and when you stitch you should lock your stitches. Also it will help if you case your leather when you go to work with it. I would detach the loop so that you get the smooth side (buff) side on the outside of the sheath. It means more stitching but it looks better. Don't bother wet forming until you have sewn the sheath. Start out by folding the sheath after casing the leather then take the folded sheath and profile it on your sander so the sheath is symmetrical. then sew it up then wet mold it.

Great work once again, I am new to leather work so I did not know why you cut a separate piece of leather for the fire steel instead of incorporating it into the pattern of the sheath and then you only have one side to sew down. Is there an advantage to using the separate peice of leather? In any case fantastic craftsmanship, the knife looks great too I may try using an old file.
@yellowdog762jb
@yellowdog762jb 4 года назад
Good question. I thought about that also. I think it probably came down to a few things. Making it separately may of allowed him to make it extra snug. Making the right angle corner cuts in leather, where the top corner matches the bottom corner, can be difficult to do free hand. Also, you can make the loop out of a spare bit of scrap leather. If you incorporate the loop into the pattern that you're cutting out you'll probably end up having a large void intruding into your remaining leather. I always try cutting my pattern as close to an edge as possible while fitting the pattern onto a section that doesn't leave dangly spare pieces hanging off my leather sheet, all while also avoiding scars, stains and creases already present in the leather.

It is important to always wear a face mask when sanding leather. The dust will not leave the lungs. So too if one is sanding antlers or bone of any sort. Its serious busness. Nice product. Have found neatsfoot oil can go away much faster than some of the hide rejuvinator past products. Maybe use both? Anyway... Thanks for the video
