Business booms for San Jose pie shop after Tesla unexpectedly cancels order

That tesla employee that doubled the order and then canceled should be suspended or fired. Total lack of regard for their actions on a small business.

Tesla already gets a lot of bad press these days, and yet that employee decided that it would be a good idea to get more.😂

What a jerky move whoever that employee is who cancelled!! A reprimand or suspension is warranted! Kudos to the community!

This only happened because of media attention. The text message the Tesla employee sent was disgusting. "ThAnKs fOr YoUr SupPorT!"

next time she better get a deposit that covers her supplies at the least.

I used to work at a small bakery, large orders like these take so much time and manpower to get done on time and small quality businesses like these make everything by hand. Plus we have to tend to customers that are walk-ins and make bread to sell in store at the same time.

I have been to this shop several times over the past year. They are great pies. Every time I went there the business seemed slow. This “Pie gate” fiasco put them on the map . Great advertising!!

Elon Musk has a reputation for puliing out of big commitments at the last minute, with the only exception being his interns.

The employee who placed that order should seriously face consequences for their lack of compassion and being incompetent when working with partners and vendors. Really happy to see the community all come together though. Also, can’t believe a mini pie in CA is like $3; they’re like $8+ here in CO. …and I keep getting told everything is more expensive there 🙄

Prepayment for big orders. Simple.

You don’t ask for a deposit for large orders? If the client cancels you keep the deposit. It’s a win win if you know how to run a business. I get 3-5 clients a year that cancel and I sometimes are glad they cancel and it’s easy profit. Don’t ever trust people’s words, get a deposit!

That's crazy af. I would have asked for half if not full payment. A big corporation screwing over a small mom and pop shop.

She cancelled customer orders to make the Tesla order. All those local supporters must have missed the fact that she sold them out to try and make a quick buck.

Screwing over small businesses is not fucking okay

When I first heard about this, I thought: "Elon Musk - what a no good SOB". But then someone on the inside told me that he called the person associated with this transaction and told them in no uncertain terms that this kind of thing would not be tolerated. This hasn't been made public, but kudos to him for taking responsibility and not publicly blaming this employee. He probably has bigger fish to fry than worrying about apple pies.

I was born in San Jose, lived there as a fourth generation resident, worked there, graduated from college there and developed a keen sense of what San Jose is: an absolute garbadge dump, overbuilt ghetto, polarizing, racist pit of a city.

That cancelled order was probably the best thing to ever happen to her! Now her business is famous and I bet her profits are now going to triple from now on. A blessing in disguise.

I went there a couple of weeks ago! Unfortunately I’m gluten intolerant, but luckily they also sale Gluten Free pies! I got the cherry flavor and it was delicious 😋

Remember these huge corporations are not our friends.

This sounds more like an employee without the authority to order the pies, ordered them and canceled when she went to get the money for the order and they laughed at her. In large companies, even small purchases have to go through , at least, a few people in different departments. It prevents theft and waste by not allowing one person or one department to spend money. Even if the purchase was paid for by an item in a budget, say for office parties, it still needs to be approved. You need someone to issue a purchase order and then you take that purchase order to someone else who you usually have to beg or maybe bribe with one of the pies to get them to release the funds.

kudos to the community!! the internet has trained us to see someone's hard time and point out what they should do, when the move is to see someone's hard time and think about what WE can do. someone can do every single thing the most cautiously possible, having no faith in humanity and no trust or corporate manners, and a problem might still happen. this is why we need each other to show up, not just point out what you should have done with hindsight and no context

Always take a 50% deposit on large custom orders. That's messed up they texted and cancelled the order, so glad the community helped!

I'm not blaming them. But this is why businesses require a deposit or full payment prior to beginning on the order. Especially large orders they could lose a lot on if it fell through. I hope they added some kind of prepayment policy for orders over a certain amount since this.

I've been up close to this kind of harm being done to a small business. That lack of regard & accountability for the well-being of others is a cultural red flag that should be heeded. No excuses.

Imagine ordering a custom Tesla with extra bells and whistles, maybe a limited edition paint job, top-of-the-range performance package, you know, an expensive car. And right as they have the car in the paint booth, you cancel the order. Tesla would sue. And win. Bet that isn't the outcome you'd see here. Even if she had a ninety page contract created by the same law firm that Tesla uses with airtight language. I also love the very specific capitalist mentality of "the EMPLOYEE that called and doubled should be fired" as if they weren't doing it at the request of someone with more power that doesn't make their own reservations. You're all ready for the consequences to be levied at the feet of a secretary. You've lost the plot of you think this wasn't some corporate pizza party bullshit that a VP or CFO decided should be spared no expense on Monday who had sobered up by Tuesday and had their assistant cancel on short notice. This isn't an "EMPLOYEE should be punished" type of situation. This is a CORPORATION WHOSE NAME WAS USED FOR RESERVATION should eat the cost and PR for allowing their image to be tarnished. It costs them .000000001% of total yearly PROFIT to make this right.

I remember when I was in high school I worked at taco bell and they had those party pack meals....havent seen them around here lately, but they were new when I was working there and back then, with no cell phones, no internet, it was popular for people to try to prank us. They would drive up and order 2 party packs.....I mean, that is a large family meal......and as soon as we would hear that, we would start making them. Then they would drive away. Sometimes, they would pull up and intentionally "look for their wallet" for a few minutes, just to play it out and make sure we had started on the food. And I could make a taco in 5 seconds back then.....its an assembly line. First few times I was irritated, but mostly because my boss was irritated. But really, I got paid by the hour and it wasnt my stuff that was wasted. I grew to love it when that happened, because after 10 minutes, all unused food had to be thrown out.......or eaten with no one noticing. I get why this would be devastating for a small business though. Fraud by deception is my first thought. That person made that company waste so many resources for that order, compensation should be in order. And Elon is one of my favorite people on this planet. He will make this right.

Those people cancelling orders that are already made should be ashamed its not easy making large orders and the amount of time preparing it..luckily the community stepped up to help the shop...

If Elon had any integrity, he would've still paid for the order.
