Bust A Groove is such an hidden gem of a short lived series. I'm really sad it's one of the rare rhythm games with such a huge sense of character identity. I remember the game presented itself as an hybrid between music and fighting games, allowing you to pick a dancer from a roster of incredibly quirky characters, all with their own home stages, theme songs and dance styles. You had Gas-O, the 14 year old breakdancer who was also apparently a nefarious chemical warfare genius. Kitty-N the pop idol cat girl with her own TV show and the dream of making it to the big screen. Kelly the secretary with a secret night life of going to dress up parties disguised in a giant baby latex suit. The Capoeiras, a duo of synchronized aliens who... Danced capoeira. And farted. Ham, a guy who loved hamburgers so much his theme song was just a 4 minutes long rap track about his unending love for burgers... I'm not sure there's been a rhythm game since then with such a defined cast, if you don't count rhythm games made from already pre-existing franchises, like the Persona dancing spin-offs.

Hatsumi Morinaga sang beautifully with this song, at 19 years old. She only did two more songs before disappearing from the entertainment scene altogether. Ironically, the two songs were called "Kakumei Mitai na Kanjou" ("Revolutionary Emotion") and "SAVE OUR SONG".

This is so perfect! ALL the Bust-A-Groove songs hold up amazingly today. Both original Japanese version and English versions are great. "Moonlight Party" from Bust-A-Groove 2, and "Natural Playboy" & "Shorty and the EZ Mouse" from Bust-A-Groove 1 are some of my top favorites.

Bust a Groove's OST is soooo good. This game is called "Bust a Move" in Japan, but they changed it over here to not confuse it with the puzzle game of the same name (Coincidentally, both of the series are now owned by Square Enix). Most of the songs in this game got new vocals for the English version, but some were in English already. If you or anyone else is interested in hearing more from this game, here's some of my personal recommendations: -i luv hamburgers (Hamm's Theme) -Wattare Pon (Shorty's Theme) -Transform (Kelly's Theme) -Capoeira (Capoeira's Theme) -Frida's Theme (i forgot the name)

You fail to mention that the puzze game's name is "Puzzle Bobble" and not "Bust a move" in japan. Not sure why someone would localize the name of a puzzle game to "bust a move" though.🤔

This song is great. My favorite in the entire game series. The Japanese version ties into the backstory of the character, who got her heart broken by her crush and is quite moving (the translated lyrics are out there somewhere). The English version is some generic nonsense about Never giving up and Never surrendering. There are some videos showing the character dancing the entire song Solo, which are pretty good (though in the game you're having a dance fight with sort-of unrelated dance steps). Aozora No Knife is the name of the original song, which means something like Blue Sky Knife. "To the lies of the world Every time you hurt Overflowing into that wound A beautiful blue sky that no one can return to"

This song hit me straight in the 90s, and I was taken back to being at the arcade in the mall watching people dance on DDR machines. Even if it weren't a banger song, I'd love it just for the nostalgia. Also, if you want to go down the rabbit hole of Japanese dance music... well, I'm not gonna stop you, but let's just say that yes, it is very much a thing.

Anybody else who played the game starts doing the 4 beat hearing the music? XD Bust A Move is a dance battle game that is played using the controller. When it was marketed to the West it got renamed to Bust A Groove as there is already a game named Bust A Move which is a puzzle game where you shoot bubbles as dragons. Anyway Kitty-N is a superhero type so her music sounds a bit action-ey (Aozora No Knife is the song title). The other characters has different styled music according to their character so there's plenty of genre none of the music sound like each other. Oh and 90s in Japan is wild in the music scene. They got Eurobeat, hip hop, J-Pop, R&B, Visual Kei, experimental all being popular at the same time.

This used to be one of my favorites games along with Bust a Groove 2. I used to play the japanese version of this a lot with my friends and cousins. The gameplay was simple, but engaging and the songs are so good!! Really glad to see this in the channel :) Natural Playboy is another great song!

I played this game and as far as I understood back then, this track and the character were supposed to sound and look retro. The game has an insane variety of music styles. I had never listened to this version, though. Pretty interesting.

You're pretty spot on with what the music conveys to you. Kitty N is an actress that plays a pseudo-sentai/magical girl style superheroine. Her stage is a dance hall in a high rise building, decorated with a disco ball and strobe lights. Most of her dance moves consist of punches, kicks and heroic poses with that one classic anime style audible gleam sound effect. Her jammer attack is even a bladed boomerang style weapon. When you get a high score during her stage, the lights dim and a laser light show begins.

I only played the English version so I might be biased in saying that I prefer that over this one even though it's much shorter.

You were thinking of Bust A Move, which is otherwise known as Puzzle Bobble and originated as a Bubble Bobble spinoff where you fire bubbles towards the top of the screen to clear groups of 3 or more before the screen pushes down to meet you. This is... Definitely not that.

Wow I've never heard the Japanese version of this before. Very different from the English version. I loved this game at the time, but it's a bit of an odd case. It had so much character in its presentation, but the gameplay was....incredibly dull compared to most rhythm games? It involved doing basically the same thing over and over. My other favourite tracks from this game are Gas-O's theme "Chemical Love" and Hiro's theme "Natural Playboy"

This game have one of the best songs overall. Game play is simple where you press the buttons within 4 beats. I'm more accustom to the ENG vers. of the songs which are still great.

Yes, 90s dance/techno ("EDM" wasn't a term yet) was huge in Japan too. The first Bust a Groove has one of the most-loved soundtracks in the entire rhythm game genre. The songs were put together by a UK dance producer working in Japan with Japanese artists and some US/UK vocalists. Most of the songs were already in English in the Japanese version of the game (English is weirdly common in modern Japan). This song was the major exception so 989 Studios replaced this with a musically less interesting track that's still kind of a banger.

Bruh, people gave you a Bust-A-Groove song and it was not "2 BAD"?! I lost all faith in humanity! Jokes aside, if you take recommendations from the comments or a Patron agrees that you should listen to it, I'd like to see you listen to Katamari Damacy music, "Lonely Rolling Star" in particular if it was up to me. Cheers!
