Fantastic morning of Snaring for Dungeness crab. I was a participant of the 2023 Vivid Snares Dungeness Crab Tournament and got close to winning with a 7" crab. Luckily DFW was present and was able to bust multiple poachers throughout the morning.

Im glad they’re out there. I have seen so many poachers at that beach the last few years. Glad DFG is aware of the situation

I search around until I find a spot that is producing crab, usually darker water. Sometimes the deeper water is close and doesn’t require far casting.

It’s a breakaway cannon. Helps keep my casting finger happy when throwing braid and heavy weights. They are cheap on Amazon

Do u have to have the extra crab add on on a fishing license or will just a sport fishing license work crabbing on beach?

How many rods can you use for crabbing?

If it’s from the beach, the rule is as many as you can effectively handle. For me that changes depending on how rough the conditions are with 4 rods being used if it is calm. From the pier or any jetty you are limited to 2 rods

If you’re snaring from a pier or jetty you are restricted to 2 rods, but at the beach you are allowed as many as you can handle

You can’t get one. It is illegal to take Dungeness crab from anywhere inside the Golden Gate Bridge. If you are looking for rock crab a normal fishing license will do

There should be some around, but they are much more in abundance closer to San Francisco. I hear of people getting some from boats down there, but not many from shore

Last caveat. Catching Dungeness on a beach or anywhere *east* of the GGB is also malum prohibitum.

I used to say to volks and I still do, that pending on what you are fishing for and if you have never attended law school, next best thing to drop your fishing plan is *to bring a lawyer with you* because the F&G Code is in and by itself a bear.
