Grid power here is 42 cents/kWh, so I installed 2 48V EG4 inverters for 12 kW 240V supplying 8 batteries at 42 kWh storage with 7.2 kW of panels. More batteries the better. The inverters are UL listed and not able to reverse power to the grid, even though there is the ability to charge batteries and bypass from the grid just like your system. Even with 119F last week, my power bill went from $400/mo to $60. It will take 7 years to get my money back, but it's better than payin' the Man. Good on ya!

i plan on doing the same off grid setup with generator backup with no grid tie at all ...in leyte .. i dont want to have any bill to pay and figure if i have enough battery storage and panels i should be fine .. the only thing now is finding the contractor to do it or do it myself after much research

We also have a similar but smaller solar set up on our warehouse in Northern Luzon. We only have a 5 Kw hybrid inverter, 10 x 4500 watt of panels and 1 felicity 5 kw Lifepro battery and like yours , It is set up so that we only use gride power when needed and it does not feed power back into the grid.. I plan to upgrade the warehouse solar later this year to a 30Kw system and transfer the 5kw system over to small building on our rice and corn land were we have a caretaker staying but its location requires 300 plus mtrs of power lines and poles to connect to grid power.

Hi James, I really enjoy watching your videos, especially the off grid power ones. I have two 5kw mpp solar units running in parallel and I have been very pleased with them. I live in the UK and they are not that popular here, most people have net metering units. But like you I prefer to be independent, and have power no matter what the grid does. I look forward to watching a video on your wind generator as I need one for the rainy grey winter in the UK.

I’m in USA, I have solar and battery (Tesla power wall). The power wall 2 only has a maximum of 5500 watts, the entire home is electric with the exception of the furnace which is propane. My solar array is 4500 watts. I am on net metering but I don’t get any money back from the utility but excepting the payment for the solar/battery I have no bill for power. The Tesla app on my phone gives me complete control, but if I could go back I’d get a second battery, with that I could just disconnect from the grid, with two batteries I’d have more power than all demands. I think you’re right about having that other battery.

I got a second battery this year, so we get to claim it on this years taxes, will get a third next year (hopefully the new P3 with P2 interface thats not yet released). Sadly it doesn’t give complete control, I want it to provide power to my car but it charges the batteries first then grid, I want it to fill the car when sun is abundant. Part of the issue is having to use time of use and JEA freakin pays .02 and charges .12 /oof

I live on Cebu and I am going to be be going solar like your system. My house is very small compared to yours so I figured I can get by with a 5 kw system. My question is how do you figure out how much electricity is drawn from the batteries so I can estimate how long they will last before becoming drained? Thanks for your videos they have always been helpful and entertaining. I hope to be able to come and have a stay at your resort and see it all in person.

it's an interesting setup. Detail follows... stop reading unless you want to embrace your Inner Nerd ;) Looks like you can never be partly grid source, partly battery source, (at the same time), because the 60 hz waveform would be synchronized and would backfeed the grid (if the inverter AC voltage is greater than grid voltage). That would be a True condition if the grid was down, so it has to be either grid source or inverter source, never both at the same time powering the house. Battery can be charged at any time, though. I imagine wind turbine feed goes into the inverter, a lot like a string of panels... or perhaps you feed a charge controller and charge the batteries with the wind turbine independently of the inverter? My setup is simple... 57 microinverters in a grid-tied arrangement. If the grid fails, all microinverters immediately cut off. No batteries. Each microinverter synchronizes to the grid sinewave. If the house is under light load, the AC from the microinverters, running in parallel, are outputting higher than grid voltage and I push power into the neighborhood. If big heavy loads exceed the capacity of the array (electric clothes dryer, oven, central air, etc.) such as early in the morning when the sun is weak, the house AC voltage draws down towards zero by a tiny amount, and once house AC voltage is less than grid voltage, power flows into the house and I consume power from the neighborhood in addition to the small amount of power I make and consume in the early morning at that moment. Just as you describe, I push a lot more power onto the grid than I consume, so I rack up KW credits that I can use at night or other times when the ARRAY* doesn't supply enough power. I pay about $40 per month to the electric company even though I use much less than I generate, also as you mentioned...

The first one wasn't well versed in solar (and some other electrical and plumbing needs I have), and we're still meeting with more designer/builders, until we can find one that knows how to design and build the house we want. @PiMotoTours There are much quieter systems now that are not the airplane prop type and are normally placed high and strategically placed for noise reduction. The good thing about them is on average when the sun's not shining the wind is blowing. And when the wind does blow above the rated speed they are designed to with a heat sink/brake. The higher above rated limit the more it dumps elec back to brake. Overspeed protection. Until I moved to the Philippines 2yrs ago I lived mostly off grid on sailboats since 2001 and have installed many dual systems. On the surface you are correct, someone e could just invest in more panels and Batts instead of wind, under certain conditions, ie lots of sun and little wind. But what if someone is in low sun lots of wind? Like in parts of the UK where wind power makes sense. Or at the beach or certain mountain/valley locations. Point is, there are too many variables to just throw a blanket statement to forgo wind power for more solar. If someone is off grid, or trying to minimize grid usage 50kw system won't help much during monsoon season with little to no sun for weeks or months. Or someone in a deep and forrested valley with wind constantly funneling through. Your point of an audit of potential energy is correct. Wind, solar, home hydro etc.

@@PiMotoToursalso, my last Marine-Air generator was 20yrs old when unfortunately my boat was destroyed by fire😢. It had been re built one time around the 15yr mark at a cost of about $120. It's basically just an auto alternator with props. But yes that type is very noisy in high wind. But when you really need the power you are oddly comforted by the sound knowing you won't go black at night in a raging storm. Otherwise I would keep the brake on.

I did a lot of back mountain trails, crossed a couple of rivers that had no bridges, and zig zagged my way all around the country for 8 months. I went to lots of places that foreigners never see and surprised a few Filipinos. Great adventure and I plan on beginning another loop soon. Currently living on Bohol.

Good informative video James 😊 We have similar configuration on our farm in Mindoro…except I built up my own 48v battery pack (25kWh) for half the cost of power wall type batteries…I’m sure you have the skills to do that as well…I’d love to augment with wind but where we are (inland) there is just not enough wind to even turn the blades, let alone generate much power…we do have a creek though, so I’m looking at doing something there…anyway, love your content mix 😊

Loved this video. Trying to upgrade our solar only system (no batteries) here in the Australian Tropics to a larger off grid with utility back up one but no bueno. This option doesn't seem to exist here, it's all tied to the grid with no option to use solar when the grid is down. Frustrating as hell.

Also a lot of people who had those same inverters mostly 120-volt versions are trading them in because they use too much standby power at 70 to 125 watts which is a strain on your batteries

I have solar on my home in usa and it has net metering. When i did it i was advised battery back up was not a good choice because of the cost. I really wish i would have done the battery back up. But i do have the net metering but in Virginia it resets back to zero after 1 year. Hind sight is 20/20. I only pay 8.92 a month for my meter.

Where I live they don't give you any credits for back feeding, so if you do generate enough to back feed, your neighbors are using the power you are generating, and the power company is charging them and getting paid for that energy they are not even generating.

I bought the panels, pv cable and mounting rails locally. I bought the breakers, disconnects, mc4 connectors and other hardware through lazada and amazon. I did have a few items back in the states I brought with me. I bought the inverters directly from MPP Solar in Taiwan ( link in description ) and the batteries from Felicity Solar in China. I installed it myself and I always leave it open for expansion.

This has been some great information. Thank you. If you had to do it all over again would you stay with the same brand/ system other than the amount of batteries? What I have is great for a partial backup but my 4000w inverter isn't big enough to run everything. God bless and stay safe.

Good question. Let's look at this. Say I invest in Victron ( great equipment I hear) but it was more lack luster in some ways. The cost is very high to get that unit, it is not readily available here. Now you have it and something goes down... how long would it be before you could get it repaired or replaced? Next the MPP Solar is a 1/3 of the cost a lot of the times. You take a hit that is not covered by warranty then your wallet only took 1/3 of the hit it would have on Victron or some other brands. Next new features come out that you would like but your so deeply invested in your Victron let's say so you won't upgrade and you find yourself with out of date equipment quickly. On Mpp Solar new better modern equipment comes out and we can afford and justify upgrading without breaking the bank. I am happy with my choice for being here in the Philippines.

Sounds like you're getting 1 day (or 1 night) worth of charge on existing 11kW solar only. 22kW gives you 2 ? You know here in Texas a week is not unexpected. Yeah, another source like wind could really help during a prolonged outage.

Thanks for the upload. I've got a few questions. Knowing now what you know about Felicity solar, are you going to invest in more Felicity solar batteries? And second part to that is. As you have aged batteries are you going to parallel them into the current batteries or run them off the second inverter? Also I had another question. A couple minutes in while you were showing the inverter it showed "110A" and you said that was the charge. Did I hear that wrong? or did you mean something else? I've got the Felicity solar 48v 200 (times 3) and the I only had that set at 40A (which was 10A below the recommended) when I had the Growatt inverter. But now that I have the Felicity solar inverter it communicates and does it all by itself.

yes I am charging them at 110amps and my recommended is apparently way higher than yours. When they build those batteries they will have different cells inside of them. They buy cells from different sources and what yours is and what mine is may not be the same even if we had same model of battery. Felicity really suggest buying all your batteries at the same time so they can be sure your set matches. Kinda sucks. well your not paying Tesla prices so I guess that goes with the territory. I don't complain much as just not long ago we could not even get a LifePo4 batt here

I can raise it because I am running two batteries each parallel and then those are ran in a series. This changes the math especially with them in parallel. at 110 amp the two sets are basically getting 55 amps each as long as the cable lengths are kept equal and a bms running.

I thought because my house is all concrete similar to yours that getting signal to the back corner was going to be a challenge until I saw this video and you mentioned it. Just curious, is your inverter 230V Single Phase (like Europe) or Dual Phase (like the US). I'm wondering if I could purchase my solar equipment here in the US before moving to PH. Once I finish my SRRV I will get to import goods up to $7,000 US tariff free. Peace and Love, B Goat

did you ever figure out how to get optimal solar charge with the windturbine tricking your charge controler into thinking there is more charge in your batteries then their actually is without a hybred wind/ solar c controler

I think your confused on that. I had controller that showed the battery reading slightly off from the other one. Very minor

It probably won't make much difference, but when your wind generator is putting out the max , your charge controller will throttle down your solar panels and you won't be getting optimal charge from your system, unless you get a hybrid controller with the proper components, I think you have learned beyond my experience, but trust me on this one

Net metering in the philippines is really not a good idea, there is so much red tape and hoops to jump through your better not bothering with it in the first place. Follow James's sound advice and increase your storage to as much as you can afford.

This country the Philippines is 230 single phase as is most of the world. This is not North America which is the only place to use 110/120v and 220/240 dual phase. However in the USA in Texas I do own the 120/240v split phase version of this unit.

Ummm the next comment down I am reading is from you and it was posted an hour before this so i think your mistaken that it is not here. @tryscience @tryscience • 8 hours ago it's an interesting setup. Detail follows... stop reading unless you want to embrace your Inner Nerd ;) Looks like you can never be partly grid source, partly battery source, (at the same time), because the 60 hz waveform would be synchronized and would backfeed the grid (if the inverter AC voltage is greater than grid voltage). That would be a True condition if the grid was down, so it has to be either grid source or inverter source, never both at the same time powering the house. Battery can be charged at any time, though. I imagine wind turbine feed goes into the inverter, a lot like a string of panels... or perhaps you feed a charge controller and charge the batteries with the wind turbine independently of the inverter? My setup is simple... 57 microinverters in a grid-tied arrangement. If the grid fails, all microinverters immediately cut off. No batteries. Each microinverter synchronizes to the grid sinewave. If the house is under light load, the AC from the microinverters, running in parallel, are outputting higher than grid voltage and I push power into the neighborhood. If big heavy loads exceed the capacity of the array (electric clothes dryer, oven, central air, etc.) such as early in the morning when the sun is weak, the house AC voltage draws down towards zero by a tiny amount, and once house AC voltage is less than grid voltage, power flows into the house and I consume power from the neighborhood in addition to the small amount of power I make and consume in the early morning at that moment. Just as you describe, I push a lot more power onto the grid than I consume, so I rack up KW credits that I can use at night or other times when the grid doesn't supply enough power. I pay about $40 per month to the electric company even though I use much less than I generate, also as you mentioned...

Why you sweating so bad in your own house??? Doesnt look like your setup to be comfortable!? I think I would just pay extra for grid power until it goes out. I will just eat more rice, thank you!
