Filmed in full HD. What must have been one of the busiest days on the West Highland Line and Fort William area for a long time, a variety of workings were taking place on Monday the 2nd of October 2023, with a mix of steam and diesel traction. All of the action from the day is covered in this video, as well as bonus footage at the end.
Workings listed below:
An early start to first see 66740 'Sarah' and 73968 working 1Y11 from Edinburgh to Fort William, hauling the Caledonian Sleeper at various locations, filmed at Helensburgh Upper, Arrochar & Tarbet, approaching County March Summit, as well as at Bridge of Orchy and Spean Bridge. Black 5, 45212 can be heard departing in the opposite direction at Spean Bridge, working 5Z52 from Tom Na Faire depot to Carnforth Steamtown. Roadworks put a ten minute delay on the journey to Spean Bridge station, meaning 5Z52 wasn't filmed arriving.
Black 5, 45407 was next, working 2Y61 from Fort William to Mallaig, hauling 'The Jacobite'.
37521 and 37667 'Flopsie' propel Locomotive Services Ltd's Chairman's Train from Tom Na Faire depot to Fort William station as 5Z42. The two 37s are then filmed erupting out of Fort William, bound for Alnmouth as 1Z42.
Back to Spean Bridge station, first to see another Black 5, this time 45231 with a mk1 support coach, as well as recently refurbished 'Bubble Car' 121022 'Flopsie', making for an interesting combination, working 5Z33 from Tom Na Faire depot to Carlisle Upperby C.E. Sidings.
Around twenty minutes later, 43257 TnT with 43272 depart working 1Q09, Network Rail PLPR train, from Fort William J.Yd T.C. to Mossend Down Yard.
At Crianlarich, 45231 and 121022 are filmed again, shunting around the station for its booked water stop.
To end the day, bonus footage at Carluke showing 5Z33 blasting through the station heading south to Carlisle.

I take it the class 73 was on ETHAL duties but still has drive capacity? Backing up the Pullman with no mirrors, must have done it before as the train stopped well down the siding from the point works ? Must have done a some of work on the tracks as 3 axle bogie (as class 66 and the class 31 and others) did not use to go on the West Highland until the class 37. Something to do with axle load and wheelbase on the curves. In the picture of the Pullman the point work on the main line has a reverse curve on the left track through the point.

Why does the sleeper train need the class 66 as well? When i traveled to fort William on the sleeper the class 73 was on its own and seemed fine to manage to load

As far as I understand, it is to do with providing train heat, as well as for assistance for getting over inclines. The class 73s can struggle in wet weather.

Certainly a busy day for today's standards, great footage. I share your pain about delays on the Highland roads; in the summer it is getting worse, both with roadworks but also queues caused by slow drivers. Chasing trains up there for multiple shots is easy enough when you don't have these hazards, like in the evenings. I did get caught out on one occasion recently by the works at County March Summit on the A82. I have a shot of the sleeper arriving and departing the exact same spot at Helensburgh but with a 67 in charge. I am working on a documentary on my channel about the history of the line as well.

Incredible captures of varied motive power amid Scottish highland scenery. It just came up on my feed and I subscribed immediately. Black 5s have the best exhaust bark od all steam locos.

Why have two locos on the front?
@stewartatkinson4179
@stewartatkinson4179 11 месяцев назад
The Caledonian Sleeper has two locos, the class 73 for cupping to the Mk5 coaches and for providing ETH (extra train heat) and the 66 is used to haul the train as it doesn’t have suitable couplings for the coaches. Both locos are need on this route to prevent wheel slip.

MICKEY MOUSE RAILWAYS PLAYING MUPPET AGAIN ! Hilarious - Southern Region Class 73 ELECTRIC locos in Scotland ! So when did "Notwork Rail" lay in 750v DC third rails in the wilds of Scotland ? Another classic example of the idiotic Muppet railway network of Britain. If they can't even get their Logistics correct, to get a more suitable loco type for the train. As I doubt any Driver in Scotland is passed out to drive or oversee the inclusion of a Class 73 in the train !!!
