Today we're assembling a cheap Amazon chicken coop that we plan to use as a portable duck hut for our Khaki Campbell laying ducks. The $200 kit looks super easy to put together, and we might even use this as a budget friendly meat bird tractor!

Are these Yitahome metal chicken coop kits on Amazon worth it? With the high prices of lumber and building materials this spring, we decided to try out one of these to see if it is durable enough to be a duck hut for our laying ducks. Our main concern is that it might blow away, but hopefully we can secure it well enough for it to be a good home for our water foul, and possibly for meat chickens in the future!

We had one of these for about 2 months. The predators tore through the chicken wire and the tarp literally fell apart and blew off in some 20 to 30 MPH winds. If you keep food and water in the run the rats and mice move right on in. We tossed ours out because we didn't want to give it away to anyone to suffer what we did. Two of the upper bars rusted within 2 months. If we had to do it again we would have just covered it in hardware cloth and put a roof over it and reworked the door area which has way too much space around it to allow predators in. We ended up building a run/coop area with wood and hardware cloth. It also has hardware cloth under ground which is wired to the sides. We also did hardware cloth on the roof and covered with tin roofing panels. Much more expensive but we can sleep at night.

we have a few of these. Ours are the flatter roof option rather than the full pitch. The bad, the chicken wire isnt the strongest but its not bad. The cable ties are junk and perish after 6 months so you need to reinforce with metal clips. The tarp is useless and in our climate lasted 6-9 months. We replaced it with a truck tarp and used pallets to keep it down. The good, very sturdy frame. Great to back to back them and join together. We also use one as a dog pound .

I just got something similar. I figured for the price, it would still be cheaper even after modifying it to make it predator proof and adding the hard wire to reinforce areas. Bottom line, I think it's a good frame and hopefully will serve it's purpose with our chickens. Time will tell though. 🤞

I would reinforce the bottom 2 feet of the fencing . I have a larger tractor, like this, the predators over time can work holes in the chicken wire.

These are my thoughts also, 2-3 ft fence wire around the bottom could save your flock. I'm building several pens and was turned off by the cheap poultry wire. I use an 8-10 mil tarp on one side for weather protection. FYI there are metal cable ties (used for chain link fencing and construction) to secure the netting to the frame to last forever.

Good decision. Wood rots and needs to be replaced. You can also hose this down. It will be more sanitary. You can add weights to it if lightweight. Good luck!

definitly curious to hear how this works over the next year instead of other version. The tie straps will get sun damaged and brittle over time. Id recommend looking at twisted wire, or something else to go back over time and secure the chicken wire.

Looks decent enough for the price. If I could suggest that perhaps screwing some plywood to the bottom foot on all four sides though and maybe a bit higher under the tarp might be a good idea.

Yes, it may also help with stiffening it up and adding a little weight along with some places for them to duck 🦆 out of the wind :)

Might want to put a tarp over 1/2 for shade/weather protection

Is this the only shelter needed for the ducks 24/7? I was also looking a few khaki campbell ducks and this looks more reasonable than a hard sided coop.

No they suck. We got one and it collapsed under two inches of snow. And a friend's just blew away with even tho it was staked. And it was just a Michigan normal thunderstorm.

Well you use this in the winter too?

I have one of those and after less than a year the wind blew it so hard it folded in half and is destroyed. Also before it got destroyed a predator dug under it and killed 9 baby ducks.

I have one of these. My chickens burst a hole in the wiring. It's cheap. Don't waste your money.

We have a smaller one and it's really cheaply made. Do not recommend getting one. We ended up not getting chickens because the "chicken wire" is super cheap junk. The topper it came with already tore with the wind. You will be very disappointed as we were.

We got one and pieces were bent and they tried to make us pay $500 to ship it back. We finally decided to pay someone to make it usable. Then it collapsed on the chickens over the winter... don't buy it.

I wanted to get this for our chickens but my husband vetoed me and got a big dog kennel so much for saving money 🫤 but he thought those wouldn’t be Predator proof. So I’ll stay tuned to see how it works for you guys. ☺️

The dog kennel is good for little predators. But raccoons tore off the top of ours.
