In this episode, David will not be using his own words but borrowing them from the early Christians to show us how they view Romans 1:1-9.
In this Romans Series from David Bercot, he will be answering the questions: What the early Christians believed about the book of Romans.
The Difference Between an Oath and a Vow
A vow and an oath are two different things. An oath is a solemn declaration a person makes, swearing that he is telling the truth. In an oath, a person swears by invoking the name of God or something sacred. Jesus forbade His disciples to swear: “But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one” (Mt. 5:34-37). See also Jas. 5:12.
In contrast, a vow is a solemn promise to do something. Jesus never prohibited our taking vows. In fact, we have two examples in Acts of Christians taking vows: “So Paul still remained a good while. Then he took leave of the brethren and sailed for Syria, and Priscilla and Aquila were with him. He had his hair cut off at Cenchrea, for he had taken a vow.” (Acts 18:18). “Therefore, do what we tell you: We have four men who have taken a vow” (Acts 21:23).
Accordingly, it is not wrong for a Christian to take a vow, that is, to make a solemn promise before God to do something. However, we should be very careful about taking a vow. The Scriptures tell us, “When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed. Better not to vow than to vow and not pay” (Ecc. 5:4-5). So it is appropriate for a Christian husband and wife to take wedding vows, but it is imperative that they do not break them.
Romans 1
1 Paul, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated to the gospel of God 2 which He promised before through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who [a]was born of the seed of David according to the flesh, 4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead. 5 Through Him we have received grace and apostleship for obedience to the faith among all nations for His name, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
7 To all who are in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Desire to Visit Rome
8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world. 9 For God is my witness, whom I serve [b]with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers,

I love the speed and the amount of detail you are putting into this. When this series is finished, it will be the best resource out on the book of Romans because we get a glimpse into the early Christians' minds. Watching these along with the Romans Commentary is going to be amazing.

I have been checking every Sunday afternoon to see if part three has been posted. Thank the Lord, it is now up. I have listened to the first two parts multiple times. We will keep you in our prayers, and we trust that God will use you to safely deliver all of these messages on the entire book of Romans.

When David does these sermons, he does them two in a row. Part four is already done, but I will spread it out a little bit, so hopefully, we can have one come out every two or three weeks instead of every four to six weeks. I don't know if I'm explaining myself very well, but hopefully, they will be less time between them from now on.

Loving this series. Thank you David. I pray for you often. Regarding the Greek word translated as Grace, Favor... χάρις can also be translated, depending on context and intent of use (sometimes difficult to discern) as GRATITUDE, THANKS. This point is huge in understanding what it means to be saved (rescued) by χαρις. Much love in Christ to all the brethern.

22:25 "when He miraculously disappears..." But Luke 24:30&31 tells us the disciples actually recognized Jesus before He disappeared. Rather, it was "as He sat...took bread, blessed it, brake it and gave to them. And their eyes were opened..." He disappeared afterward. I apologize for drawing out a probable slip of the tongue, but I mention this because this passage in Luke was significant to my realization of His Presence in holy communion. These disciples here were not of the original 12 (minus Judas) so possibly they were of the 5,000 Jesus had fed and were recognizing the Lord Who had done this before for them. Thank you for this study! God bless you

I really love your videos and how you break it all down and make it practical. I also love the question and answer portion of the sermons. I have been to who knows how many Protestant Churches. I have never heard more practical and personal conversations. Most of the time it is like the pastor is there to preach and then leave. Or, they just seem so above you or unapproachable except for a few people. I have a couple of questions though about oaths and vows. I know God says does not take a vow or an oath, but what about marriage? Isn't marriage a vow /oath to each other and to God? Also I hear some Intentional communities take a vow of poverty. Wouldn't that go against God saying taking a Vow? I would really love clarification on this. These have always been a question for me.

That's interesting what you mentioned about Paul's statement " God is my witness" Would using that phrase equate to taking an oath in today's day? Is it appropriate to use that phrase to affirm a statement?

I have been watching many of your videos and Hebrews 6:4-6 and Hebrews 10:28-29 are quoted allot and I am frightened they may apply to me. I really REALLY want to follow Christ!! Is it too late for me? The amount of anguish and despair that I may be permanently cutoff from Christ with no chance of restoration is unbearable for me! Is there any hope left? Hebrews 6 4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 [a]if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame. Hebrews 10 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?

I would assume there is hope for you still, but even if there were not, what better way than to live out the rest of your days, bringing as much glory to God as you can. Fight for others to stay on the straight and narrow. It's not all about our personal salvation. It's about the Creator and King.
@davidmacfarlane4761

@@SoundFaithChannel But I will inevitably commit more sins and incur even greater wrath as I continue on. I think about the multiplier of the punishment is ever increasing over time. I spend every waking moment of every single day thinking about the torments of Hell. I am unable to be a good testimony like this! In fact my own preoccupation with the expectation of eternal torment is in fact steering others away both from me personally and also towards seeking a closer relationship with Christ. Being like this is NOT a good testimony! Words cannot describe how tormented my very existence is!! I truly wish I was never born! Others observing my misery reinforces their personal convictions of OSAS within my family, or those like me that struggle with scrupulosity or OCD to not bother with reading the Word of God. My days are spent crying out to God for mercy and forgiveness! I don't know how I am going to continue! The only way I can conceive of being a good testimony is to find hope somehow. What about the Prodigal Son? Doesn't that passage suggest God will surely accept a genuinely repentant son with open arms? There are so many spins of the gospel out there that I decided that probably the Early Church Fathers knew how to interpret the scripture best in their original contexts compared to anyone's modern spin. I have been on a journey to attempt to find and practice the Historic Christian Faith as close as possible as to how it was done in the Early Church, in an effort to live a life pleasing to God. What i have found instead in David Bercot's videos is Guaranteed Assurance of Eternal Condemnation!
