I'm an Anglican Priest in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and I get to serve in the Parish of St Margaret of Scotland, in the beautiful city of Halifax, NS, that sits on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people.
My pronouns are he/him/his. My theology is primarily Christo-centric - Jesus is at the centre and it is against Him that all values are bounced off. I believe all people are created in the image of God and are children of God and are heirs to the throne of God - no conditions - therefore every single person we meet deserves our love, and respect.

The verse saying "Judge Righteously and plead the cause of the poor and needy" in Proverbs gave me a different outlook on what that means. We're not called to use biblical laws to judge others. We're called to LOVE. And when someone is loved, cared for, accepted and have those needs met....THAT alone can literally be life changing!

It is the love and caring for the children (pregnancy on up) - preventing trauma, neglect, and abuse, that protects the amygdala and keeps people from becoming "bad" people. Hate the sin, love the sinner makes sense when you understand that NO-body wants to be a hateful/fearful person. They are warped into that condition by the horrible events they experienced in early childhood that trigger the amygdala, or, as it's also known, the fear center of the brain. Trauma, neglect, and/or abuse in early childhood overstimulates the amygdala (the brain's fear center) causing it to grow huge and results in aberrant thoughts and behaviors. This is damage you can LITERALLY SEE IN A BRAIN SCAN! Read the peer reviewed research on the fMRI differences between conservatives and liberals. Here's a little help; conservatives have larger amygdalas and liberals have larger anterior cingulate cortexes. Amygdala = fear. Anterior cingulate cortex= higher level, complex thinking. Red brain, blue brain: evaluative processes differ in Democrats and Republicans. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3572122/ www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/23418419/

"Judge not..." was one of my Mum's favourite quotes (with six kids, she had a lot of work keeping the peace!) "Two wrongs don't make a right" was another gem! One thing we are called to be is humble. When you judge, you are not humble. You are essentially saying "I am superior to all of you." The woman "caught in adultery" is a prime example of how Jesus viewed judgement. He agreed with the men who were getting ready to stone the woman that, according to the law, this was what was supposed to happen. Then he told them that only the one completely free of sin could cast the first stone. After they all left (because of course none of them were completely free of sin) Jesus asked the woman "Does no one condemn you?" when she confirmed that to be true, He said "then I don't condemn you either. Go and sin no more". The ONE PERSON who was qualified to make a "righteous judgement" refused to judge her. It is the height of hubris for anyone to say "Oh, yes judge not UNLESS it's RIGHTEOUS judgement". When you do so, you put yourself about Jesus. Not exactly humble.

Pleading with God on other's behalf, carries with it the implication that we get to know that person. And thru knowing them, understand them and then learn to love them ourselves. This is why God loves each of us, his indwelling spirit knows our every thought, thus he understands us perfectly.

Hi good morning I'm going to say this. I believe that righteous judgement does not belong to you or me or anyone else it belongs to God alone and who is the determined what righteous judgment is. To me it goes like this the United States I assumed Canada as well have laws that are created by man for man and therefore those who sit in judgment are there to sit in judgment against or for those who have either broken those laws or have been harmed by someone else who has broken those laws. To me all other judgement must come from God we who are not God or not in a place to judge rightly or wrongly what someone does or does not do. I am here to offer to people regardless of what they do to offer to them God's love and God's forgiveness.

From the “get go”, my thoughts concerning the authority to employ “righteous judgment“ applies only to freedom of choice… Id Est “Is the behavior I am observing in others worthy of being emulated by me?” Or perhaps, “Is the behavior I am exhibiting something I would like to see emulated by others?” What Biblical “Righteous Judgement” does not provide, is the authority to enforce retribution. Just a thought…

This is one of my favorite instructions from Jesus: "judge not that you be not judged." This includes self-judgement. If we refrain from judging others, we will likewise refrain from judging ourselves. That's not to excuse poor behavior, it's to encourage good behavior. People who judge others, have a nasty tendency to mistreat them as well. When we refrain from judgement, we tend to be more generous. We can express our opinion of another's behavior as being what it is, without impugning the character of the person. Of course, one of the main reasons for not judging another, is because we don't know all the facts. Only deity, which does know all the facts, (and I do mean ALL the facts), is in a position to accurately judge. Which God assigned the Ancients of Days to handle. God doesn't even judge us himself. Which facilitates being intimate with him.

When I judge others it seems to get in the way. It breeds a sense of superiority when I should be humble. Mostly if I judge it makes them lesser than others in my mind and leads to distrust. A relationship of distrust is no way to share the joy of God's love. We all judge on a daily basis. Whenever I meet someone new I place them in categories based on looks and body language. However, I work very hard to treat them all with love and joy despite my preconceptions. I look at it this way. Each of us has our own path in life. The best way to teach others to walk the path of righteousness is by example alone. Our job is to love them the way God loves us. If no one you meet deserves your love and you give anyway, remember, none of us deserve Christ's yet he gave all he had. I know I can't possibly measure up to Jesus but I can give all I have and if possible find more. If you want to make the world a better place then make yourself a better person. You can't do that if you are too busy comparing yourself to others. That is what judgment is in the end. You believe yourself to be better than someone else. We are called to be servants not masters of mankind. God bless everyone.

The only righteous judgement is His. We are each in our own test and answer only to Him. Society can make laws on social behavior only to the extent to let us function as a group. WE judge that murder is not acceptable in our group, but short of that like drinking or other ideas it is between that person and the Lord. We have the free will to act and chose. Here's a quote I came across from a 1985 Christian Science Monitor article... "Judging righteously means judging rightly; and judging rightly, in its deepest sense, means judging according to the divine reality of being, in which everyone's true selfhood is recognized to be spiritual, reflecting the graces of God, divine Love." Sounds to me like judging from a place of equality, as opposed to from a place of superiority.

Judging is GOOD! Judging is weighing the good and the bad to best understand the situation. I judge the pros and cons of sale prices in deciding whether to buy one item or save more money by buying half a dozen of them. I look at the traffic and judge if it's safe to cross the street. I even judge if a person seems honest or not in order to decide if I want to develop a relationship with them. What I try to do, though, is to not condemn them. Judges weigh the good against the bad, and then they decide if the person is guilty or innocent. If the judge has decided that the person is guilty, then he condemns their actions and punishes them. PLEASE help change the terminology. Judging is good. Condemning others is not. That's best left up to God. Edit: I judge that the 2ximpotus is not a good enough person to have a relationship with, so I'll leave him up to God to decide what to do with him. I DO feel sorry for the 2ximpotus and the trauma he must have gone through as a child that made him so (brain) damaged that he turned out this way. I sometimes think that's the best we can hope for... not to condemn. I judge that he's on the wrong side of heaven and hope that God will step in and take care of the situation. Brain/Amygdala damage comes from...

Imagine believing in an omnipotent, etc god and then second guessing them!! It also occurs to me that the distinction between 'judgement' and 'righteous judgement' relates to the erroneous hierarchy of sins that you mentioned before.

The argument that conservative "Christians" make is that Christ said we could judge "righteously" (John 7:24), BUT when Christ says that is He not referring back to Proverbs 31:8-9, where we are told to judge righteously in defense of the poor and needy? The rest of the time scripture is pretty clear that we should avoid judging our neighbor (James 4:12, Romans 14:10, John 8:7-11, Romans 3:23, etc.). And also John 5:22 tells us that Christ ALONE has been given ALL judgment.

Righteous judgement (condemnation) 4:45 belongs to the righteous but as Paul writes in Ro. 3:10 "As it is written, 'There is no one righteous, not even one' " Truly righteous acts, arising from the actor's innate righteousness, belong to God alone. Jesus' admonition reflects the sin of taking on God's place (thus violating the 1st commandment) and saying things are "of God" is risking violation of the commandment against vain use of God's name.

Jesus didn't spend his time on earth going around judging and condemning those who were lost spiritually but showed love to those who hardly had love shown to them. He did however openly judge and condemn those who were deeply involved in religion, who spent all their time studying the law, and yet missed everything it said, and used it as a way to elevate themselves and make themselves appear better than everyone else, who showed no mercy to others and lived very hypocritically.

I think that too many Christians conflate " Discernment" with " Judgement". They are similar but definitely not identical.

In my belief, for me, "righteous judgment" can be met with Jesus' words to the crowd wanting to stone a woman accused of adultery. "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone." ***** I've had this question for awhile: Why do some Christians consider, or come across as considering, homosexuality a far worse crime than murder? Because for me, it is the opposite. If I'm gonna be judgy, that is.

We are flawed. We seek our own interests a majority of the time. So we are in no position to judge another. Salvation isnt something to be made exclusive its to be inclusive. The only judging we should be doing without beating ourselves up is how can i personally be a better follower of Christ Jesus. How can i help out the poor the sick the widowed the orphaned the stranger the imprisoned and my neighbors. I hear Christian say when they do something hypocritical oh God's still working on me. Well i personal try to to have that view for everyone. With humility comes empath. And with empathy comes compassion. And with compassion comes love.

Righteous judgment belongs to God. By appropriating God’s right to judge for yourself is to proclaim yourself equal to God, which condemns yourself, as Lucifer did. Am I on track here?

As your basic human being, how am I to be qualified to determine what's "righteous" if I'm just like everyone else? I don't have any special connection to the Presence that's unavailable to everyone else. That being the case, judgment is judgment, and I'm excluded from being allowed to do that. So, I make every effort to avoid that presumption. I'm still working on doing that correctly. (Sigh!)

Its so weird there is this unofficial yet ongoing competition for God's favor we feel is best attained by putting down others. I have no idea where it came from or where its taught but its such an unfortunately prevalent checkpoint people arrive at and make their final destination when we're all supposed to be in personal ongoing journeys that last our whole life. A list of do's and don'ts is such a shallow takeaway from the Bible but mayhaps I'll need to rephrase that so I don't come off as too judgy for those that reach such a conclusion xD

1 Corinthians 5:12 NLT: paul says “t isn’t my responsibility to judge outsiders, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those inside the church who are sinning.” Paul contradicts himself many times I noticed, and contradicts what Jesus taught quite a bit. I find the books that Paul wrote very confusing and not in line with what the rest of the Bible teaches.

My dad told for a number of years the Bible was the inspiration word of god, and it is all true, or it is all false. I have found many contradictions in the Bible, but Paul contradicts himself more than anyone. Makes me question if what Paul has to say is believable

Jesus (or those who wrote about him) was not consistent. He judged people; he modeled judgment of those who opposed his way, those he considered to be serious sinners (in contrast to the "loose and lovable sinners"). Focusing only on the times when he said not to judge is sweet, but incomplete. Righteous judgment in the Bible is using God's word to distinguish between right and wrong. Now, some people do misinterpret or misapply God's word in very significant ways, but it's literally impossible (and very undesirable) not to stand against evil, corruption, and oppression.

"for as you judge, so will you be judged..." If you are going to expect people to adhere to rules from Leviticus without considering Christ's grace or cultural/historical context... well, you'd better be adhering to all those rules too. Own a poly-cotton shirt? Then you had better not be judging someone over who they love or how they dress or whether they attend church regularly. If you use the Law to judge, then you will be judged according to the Law. Discernment is healthy. Judgement is better left to Christ.

Leviticus 19:15 Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbour. Deuteronomy 4:8 And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? Deuteronomy 16:19 Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous. Deuteronomy 25:1 If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked. Exodus 22:21 Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Leviticus 19:33 And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. Deuteronomy 24:14 Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: Deuteronomy 15:11 For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy needy, in thy land. Psalm 12:5 For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith the Lord; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him. Psalm 35:10 All my bones shall say, Lord, who is like unto thee, which deliverest the poor from him that is too strong for him, yea, the poor and the needy from him that spoileth him? And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts. Malachi 3:5 There are many verses that speak of righteous judgment, and anyone considering themselves a believer, are to judge those in power according to Hashems' Word. We are to judge those in power and vote them in or out according to my Father's Word.

It is righteous to run a shelter for abused women and children. It is not righteous to abuse women and children. It is righteous to protect and comfort the poor and oppressed. It is not righteous to oppress or steal from the downtrodden. I do not need to be righteous to know the difference. I do not trust those who cannot (or refuse to) make such distinctions. Judgement and condemnation are NOT the same. Condemnation is a religious concept; judgement is not. Condemnation requires the presumption that one is not worthy of love, or God's love; judgement asserts that someone may not be worthy of our individual love - the world is big; everyone loves someone - we do not have to do it all. I am guilty of many "sins." I am not guilty of abusing women and children, or intentionally harming the poor, and neither are most people. It would be unintelligent (and potentially dangerous) to NOT distinguish between an abuser and someone who let's say, indulges in sloth. We should self-reflect and be humble. We should not be so self-obsessed, neurotic, or concerned with ourselves that we are unable to make distinctions regarding the impacts of other people's actions. We should forgive and avoid judgement regarding shortcomings and mistakes (especially when people admit to mistakes and/or work to heal the harm they cause). We should be less quick to reserve judgement or forgive those who feel no remorse for the serious harm they willingly inflict, and seek to do it again. Those of us who have experience with the sadistic, psychopathic or just plain cruel don't lose sleep over such 'judgements.'

Jesus says to NOT judge by outward appearance but a righteous judgement !!!! So, not by behavior but by His Grace. The only way any of us are righteous is to be found In Him, rightheous by faith, His faith, see Gal 2:16 &20 KJ. Anything else is legalism and God won't accept that but He has accepted the perfection of Christ and that is The Gospel.

I don't disagree with this, but it's a tricky path to navigate when, for example, people aid and abet an ongoing genocide. I believe it is my job to pray for grace, mercy and peace for those people, but it's also my job to reveal truth and demand justice and liberation. Sometimes that needs to be done robustly, but it doesn't negate my genuine prayer for them.

I don't remember anything about "righteous judgment" with regard to condemnation. If anything, it's righteous if someone doesn't show love to others (heal the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, etc.), not that we get to decide which of the many sins are "righteous." It seems that most of the things that the person's pastor relative says are "righteous" are things that *man* has decided are to be condemned. We don't condemn someone for eating shellfish, which is also an "abomination", but they use it for "people not like them" (such as homosexuals.)

Ok. In the letters to the churches in Rev., Jesus, the Son of God, did not call on churches to throw out “Jezebel”. He didn’t judge the elders for allowing this woman to lead many astray. He said He would punish her,and her “children”. He is “the One who searches minds and hearts, and will repay each of you according to your deeds.” It seems every Christian is responsible for their beliefs and resulting deeds. Jesus is responsible for taking care of His church.

Ok. So, I decided to “plop” for my Bible reading this morning, and opened to 1 Timothy. Paul writes to Timothy, in 1:3,4, to “command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer nor devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies rather than God’s work-which is by faith.” Obviously, God wants to me to think deeper about this. Paul expects Timothy to confront Christians who teach false doctrines, by his judgment. But Paul clarifies his command to Timothy in 1:5: The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. What’s the goal of judging others? To condemn and exclude? Or to love, knowing that your own heart needs to be pure and your conscience clean? Oh bother, Father God! Why did you make me human, and then say I have to be an angel!?!

Get to know yourself first. If some people were harassing a homeless man I would stop them then I would help the homeless man. It is simple forbid the bad and do good as you can. And encourage the others to try harder. We can have courts that follow universal law. How many times I have been condemned to burning in hell ( from Christians not Jews ) since I reverted to Islam is amazing but there is hope. Two pastors recently came to my shop listened to why I prefer Islam and did not condemn me . The first said I wish my congregation would take it as seriously as you do. I say if a prophet of God said something it is upon us to hear and obey. That being said I am far from perfect as we all are but thankful to be a work in progress. So Encourage Good and Forbid Evil either buy action or gentle speech preferably. Be wise as serpents but as GENTLE as doves maybe?
