The Butano was introduced to me by my Spanish friend Luis Esteban Hernandez and has become one of my favorite nymphs over the last year and a half. It sinks like a stone and fools trout by the dozens. It is the perfect fly for a Euro-nymphing rig.

This is one of my top producing flies! I had to come back and leave a comment. I fish it as my top fly/attractor but 50% of the fish I catch on that rig will go for that fly. THANKS!

lol I've been tying this pattern after seeing Devin tie one in a promo for his nymphing video. I happened to deviate and ended up using this color scheme -- some say the color may not matter too much, but it worked really well for me on the Lower P. Kudos to TFF!

Chris S. thanks and I'm glad it has worked well on the Lower. I haven't fished it enough down there.

The Perdigon was a hot fly at the Deschutes this year, we crushed the redsides rainbow with size 18...averaged 17 to 21 fish a day, just got tired of hauling fish after fish.

Bala perdigons have certainly worked well for me whenever I’ve fished the D.

Why is the wing case on the top of the hook if the fly is going to ride upside down? It seems to me it should be on the other side of the bead. Just asking, you're the pro. All the best, and thanks for sharing. Sean

+Sean Mooney thanks for asking. It is a good question that I have gotten many times. I'll have a detailed answer for you in a blog post in the next few days. Until then I'll just say that the fly fishes the same with the wingcase on the top or bottome and I believe there are some logical reasons why that I'll share in the post.

What is the advantage of fishing a smaller size fly on a larger size hook? I have an idea but I'm curious what your reason is. One negative I would think is that the hook starts to be more and more unnatural and intrusive. A size 18 fly on a size 10 hook for example just seems pretty hard for a trout to ignore.
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 4 года назад
The benefit is pretty simple. With a larger hook the point is longer and the gap is wider so you tend to lose less fish. Obviously you don't want to overdue it. I wouldn't tie a fly length more than a size shorter than the hook it's on.

Gary LaFontaine used to comment that the fish are looking for what is "right" about the fly, not what is wrong with the fly. If the latter were true, any hook visibility, regardless of amount would result in rejection. And then there are the beads...

Would Hard as Nails be a good substitute for the UV glue? It would require a few coats.
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 7 лет назад
Hard as nails would work but I think you'd need about 3 coats to form the same layer of resin depth.

i use the same UV resin, but it gets foggy after a few days of making the fly, any way to fix this?
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 5 лет назад
michaelsw0rd I’ve switched to Solarez bone dry resin since the video. It has fixed the problem. You can find it at the link below. www.tacticalflyfisher.com/solarez-bone-dry-uv-cure-resin/

Also, a coat of Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails will protect those resins. Adds another step.

Hello Devin. Two questions. First is what are you using to hold these flys while waiting to dry? Also, is this the same pattern as the tinsel perdigon? Thanks
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 2 года назад
Chris, I don't tie these flies the same way anymore since I did this tutorial 7 years ago now. I just put resin on it and hit it with the light. There's no need for drying time. And yes, this is one variation of the Lite Brite Perdigon.

@@tacticalflyfisher3817 ok. Thanks. But when tying a lot at one time what are you using to store them while they dry? Some foam?
@tacticalflyfisher3817
@tacticalflyfisher3817 2 года назад
@@chriscrumbley9219 Yes, but again they don't need to dry. The resin cures dry with the light.

@@chriscrumbley9219 got it. Yes, I put them on foam while the nail polish dries. By the time you’re done with the batch, the first ones you tied will be ready for resin.

Sounds like your nail polish is a bit thin then and is running. I haven't had that happen as long as I put the nail polish on before the resin.
