Fact or Fiction?
Butch Cassidy remains one of the most notorious outlaws of the American West. After his death in 1908 during a shootout in Bolivia his legend only grew. However after a rare book collector obtained a 200-page manuscript, 'Bandit Invincible: The Story of Butch Cassidy,' which dates to 1934, there was some doubt as to whether or not Butch died in Bolivia. Some people believe he faked his death and adopted the name William T. Phillips. From there he moved to Spokane and eventually died of old age as a machinist in 1937.
It is a controversial theory and one with rigorous debate on both sides. Join us as we explore the wild western town of Spokane and unravel the theory that maybe Butch Cassidy didn't perish in Bolivia, but actually wrote his own biography here in Washington State.

So glad to learn more about my hometown! Thank you! I did not know that Bing Crosby was born in Tacoma. He moved to Spokane at the age of three and went to school at Webster Elementary on Main Street and later attended Gonzaga high school. I think Spokane's claim on him is well-founded! Thank you for your great channel!

I think he survived. Just by his sister's eye witness. Where he went after he saw his sister. I have no clue.

Spokane can document its roots back to the 1870’s and has a great history. I think one thing we can say for sure is that the streets of Providence and Garland both run east and west and never intersect!!! Sonora Dodd was the founder of Fathers Day. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery and I knew her as a kind and gentle woman. Thankyou for an entertaining show!

You are 100% right. My grandparents would be deeply disappointed that I forgot the layout of their street.

William T Phillips was not Butch Cassidy. Wilcox was his real last name. Phillips was his young cousin who died at a young age. So he knew more about Butch than most people.

William T. Phillips was in the Wyoming Territorial jail in Laramie, with Butch. Phillips tried to pass himself off as Butch

Whatever came of the story that Butch Cassidy's gun was found among William T Phillips personal possessions after he died. Would the host of this fascinating story please get back to me about this question. Also it had been supposedly been reported the WTP knew the way back to Butch's hideout. I had heard this several times over the years.

I am not sure about the gun. I never found a reliable source on it to confirm.

Very interesting. My question is what was William in jail for in Wyoming?

Great question. I would need to double check again but I believe it was cattle rustling.

@PrettyGrittyTours I have spent a lot of time in the Circleville area and read Butch Cassidy's sisters book. From what I have learned, if any outlaw deserves to get away with it, it was Butch.

As far as I have been reading, I haven't heard or read that Butch Cassidy had gone to California. I have met a direct Niece of Butch. She grew up knowing her Uncle, Bob, as she said she called him. I'll be doing some more information search.
