"Butchered" Amiga 500 Rev. 5 Board Repair

Thanks for the video. It has helped me a lot, in bringing a Rev5/kick-1.2 machine back to life. I took notice on the fat agnus issue, and shure enough, one of the pins on mine had a thick layer of black corrotion. I moistoned it with IPA and scraped it off with a screwdriver that is as thin as the legs. Cleaned again and reseated. Then it sprung back to life with a glorious 1.2 boot screen. And then I used some 3 hours to clean rust from the plastic bottom-case. 50 percent was covered in rust from the shield. And some I had to scrape a thin layer off the case inside, as the rust had buried down into the plastic. 33 percent restored. Took 8 hours so far.

Really useful and inspiring video Jan. I had a dead A500 rev 5 sitting for decades and it motivated me to start digging. I found two "cold" chips, Gary and Rom kick start .

Congratulations on the successful fix. Hats off to you! I hope though that my A500+ will never require to undergo such a treatment. :)

I actually also burnt out those 2 resistors on our Rev 5 board back in the day. I was trying to connect it to our old TRS-80 Model III using a null-modem serial cable that had all 25 wires connected. The Amiga 500 supplies +12V and -12V on pins 9 and 10 (of the DB25) respectively via those 47 ohm resistors. The TRS-80 serial port didn't use those pins, but unfortunately instead of leaving them floating, it actually grounded them. This meant 12V across those resistors, which is around 3W which is far greater than they could handle. I suspect the TRS-80 wasn't the only computer/device that grounded those pins, hence why you'll see those resistors burnt out on many Amigas.

Ironic that this video popped up in my "next up" autoplay feed... the day AFTER I replaced an Agnus socket to cure a bad data path on an R6 board! Thanks for the great content, Jan.

I am hoping that the PLCC mount in the A500 is the same one that houses the Super Buster chip for the A4000, I think it is. I followed the recommendation that if you are careful a screwdriver can work with this socket; however, I do not know how a screw driver would ever work with a PLCC socket, for I was careful and the brittle socket cracked instantly in the corner while trying to upgrade to a 1 meg 8372a chip, for I live in Canada with a revision 5 fat agnus and the 8370 and I wanted better Pal compatibility with the new ACA500 Plus. Anyway, I have ordered a new socket and the proper socket remover on its way from Europe...I just hope I can de-solder and replace the socket half as good as you have done. You have a tremendous touch with these very delicate and often stubborn components. Great video...I will be watching it again while removing my old PLCC socket, which hopefully will be soon. Hej då.

I'm tempted to just buy a broken Amiga now, after seeing you fix a bunch of them. I sort of want to spray paint the case of my Amiga, but I don't have the heart to modify the machine my dad got me back in perhaps 1993 or 94. If I got a second one that isn't working, I could simply fix the main board (ehm, "simply") and sell it, while keeping the case.

Any idea if the video module at HY1 is available anywhere? I've recently gotten my hands on an Amiga 500 PCB that's missing that and everything socketed, I've source everything else but that part.

Those holes aren't just good for pushing out the ICs, you can also use a twist tie through them to help you retain the socket while soldering it down easier.

Hi Jan, What desolder station are you using, and does it clog up on you much? I have a xytronic 988 that I spend more time trying to get unclogged than I do desoldering. Also great job on the 500!

Can failed caps alone cause a green screen? I'm trying to resurrect my old rev 5 a500, slowly doing all the usual troubleshooting.

You should get a ic pin straightener, very simple device, quick to use, handy for aligning the pins for sockets and pcb holes, as even new devices don't line up.

Do you put Heatsinks on any Amiga chips?

Alright, this was pretty good Jan. An amiga brought back from the gates of hell. Hopefully you can find a nice case for it.

I always look for my old A500 rev 3 board I sold on ebay. Can't remember if it had a broken Agnus socket (I need to locate the photos I took for ebay)... But I do know the Crystal OSC had been removed... not sure if I put it in a socket and put it back or not... It also had jumper pads near the Agnus and the Trap door slot cut/soldered to complete a full 1mb of Chip RAM modification. I believe I sold the old board with an A501 expander (512k) which had its battery removed and an attempt to put a coin socket batter inside. I think I did damage my Agnus socket back in the early 1990s before I learned how to extract them better.... possible I put the old 512k one back in instead of the 1mb one. My A500 was set up to use the A501 expander, and one of the MegaChip's (DKB with the 8372b).... bringing it to 2mb CHIP RAM. I believe I put a M-Tec 68020 board in it (with 4mb of 32 bit RAM). I wanted to pair it with a M-Tec AT (IDE) Hard disk controller with 8mb of simms inside... But I couldn't understand the German instructions fully... I'd get the hard drive formatted but it would never show. So later I swapped it (from Software Hut or Devine.. or Grapevine... one of those mail order companies) with an Expansion Systems IDE/SCSI Combo and later added the 8mb RAM card. That brought the system to 14 MB total on an A500 with a 68020 ! Shame about the M-tec AT controller though... later I realized all I had to do was copy " Disk.info " to the partitions I had made and they would have shown up on the WB Screen... Sigh. A simple mistake. But it was still a good idea to pair up the two M-tec products together.. and THIS board is best to use a Megachip 500 on ! The other two, the rev 5a or 6? and the A500+ might be better to use a 2mb Agnus in the socket as long as you have 1mb of RAM in the trapdoor slot to finish the 2mb CHIP RAM limit. If that board above had damage to the Crystal OSC and there was any signs of the traces cut near the Agnus or the Trapdoor area... it could have very well been mine at one point. Although I don't recall the burned resistors ... Also, it looks like three more resistors are missing near the Paula and Gary... Which I know I didn't remove.

Congratulations! Well done. That was a great Amiga resuscitation; well worth the effort. The green-bodied resistors -- are they anything special, higher Wattage, flame resistant, etc?

Those two burnt resistors - what may have happened is that the previous owner mixed up the cables between the two data sockets on the back. I did this when I was a teenager and managed to connect one socket to the other - the machine was smoking, but fortunately my dad repaired TVs for a hobby and managed to fix it. Those resistors may have seen the same fate.

Hello can you help me ? My Amiga 500 led power blinks non stop and the tv screen stays grey do you know what is the source of this issue? i have a second issue: I turn on the PSU but the Amiga 500 doesn´t turn on (the PSU was tested it´s working ok) what should i do about? and there another issue with another Amiga 500 the drive led light is always lighted up (i exchanged the way i plugged the drive connectors but the led stills always on)

I have found that my Rev 5 boards has better picture quality VS my rev 6A boards. At least on the screens I use (BenQ BL 702A and BL 912). So I put an 8372A Agnus in one of my Rev 5s for 1MB chip, and now use it as my main A500 for my ACA 500 + ACA 1221. Superior picture quality simply.

Great Job. I enjoy Live Amigas too! That socket looked hard. But you made it look easy. I don't want to see or hear about any landfilled Amigas... What camera(s) did you use to record your video with. Plus what were you talking about timing on the camera? I know about the bars on the screen. But how did you fix it? Great job! =D I had to do the same thing with my last 500 that I repaired. People ruin those PLCC sockets by levering out from the corners =( With those 2 resistors, you might find you've also got a faulty MC1488! In order to test that you would need to use the serial port with something - but they are hardly ever used anyway.

Nice video - for some reason I thought those plcc sockets were surface mounted and I was about to be even more impressed by your rework/repair skills :). Edit: I just realized why I thought that - because without a socket you have to surface mount those chips. Socketing it probably saved Commodore money ironically ;).

hi you are hot at fixing the cpu socket is hard to get out i have done it my self you got to have the heat right when doing the job to stop tracks lifting a round the out socket

Always enjoyable watching a successful Amiga repair. I am currently working on my very first repair. The Amiga is a 500 rev 6a board, it hasn't been butchered, it's in very nice condition, but has a problem. The power led blinks 10 Short + 1 Long. And sometimes it will stop blinking, and the floppy drive starts to tick/ read disks, but still no boot screen. Any ideas?

It seems rare for one of those Fat Agnus sockets to NOT be cracked. The A500 I just got had its Fat Agnus socket glued and zip-tied back together...

I wish I had a Jan Beta here in New Jersey, USA... I have a pair of Amiga 500's I'd love to try to get at least one working unit out of.

I am wondering what burned up those resistors?! They got SMOKING HOT to burn up like that. This means a lot of CURRENT flowed thru those parts. The Amiga 500 is my second favorite Amiga model, I have 6 of them in their original boxes and many loose ones. So, I am always happy to see another one repaired or saved from the trash. The Amiga 500 blows the fucking doors off the Amiga 600 and 1200 as far as quality and design. Also, the Amiga 500 is the most popular and number one selling Amiga model, followed by its big sister, the Amiga 2000.

Here's a tip: you might want to put tape on the jaws of the pliers so that the teeth do not grind the legs. You can also get smooth jawed duck bill pliers for that job.
